Mark Watches ‘Jurassic Park’: Liveblog

So, what started as a joke is now a reality. I now have the free time to do this, so I’d like to start hosting liveblogs purely for the sake of it. These one-offs won’t have reviews. This is just for us to watch things totally spoiled and yell and flail and post GIFs. And what better thing to do this with than Jurassic Park, one of the greatest movies in the history of the world?

IT’S HERE. JURASSIC PARK LIVEBLOG.

Image by the lovely and talented Melissa/beepbeeprobot.

EDIT: SO. My hosting service went down completely on January 29th, so the liveblog has now been moved a week later. I hope y’all can come!

This is not a review. This is just a chance for us to all hang out for a couple hours and have a good time. It’s like a field trip for Mark Watches! Except we chose to go to the local theater, take it over, and now we’re going to yell at the screen.

This liveblog will start at 11:00am PST on Sunday, FEBRUARY 5TH. Please consult a world clock to determine what time that is for where you live! At exactly that time, we will all start our DVDs, streams, downloads FROM THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE UNIVERSAL LOGO. That means you may need to start the movie before hand and then pause it as soon as it appears on the screen.

The rest is simple. Comment. GIF. Yell. ALL-CAPS. Laugh. Cry. Realize Laura Dern is a better person than you are. Desire sex with Jeff Goldblum. WHATEVER. It’s a party, and you’re all invited.

There will be more of these in the future. You are so not prepared.

so what happens to ian malcolm? i should really read the second book

  2. kelseyofcake says:

Every child should be required to watch this movie the moment they take an interest in dinosaurs. PERFECTION.

  3. monkeybutter says:

I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH

THE MUSIC IS GOING TO MAKE ME CRY

I LOVE YOU FOR THIS LIVEBLOG, MARK

  4. stardate47988 says:

    RIP Michael Crichton

  5. Karen says:

    Awww, Stan Winston. :'(

LOL, "Dinosaur Supervisor, Phil Tippett." WHERE WERE YOU DURING THIS MOVIE, PHIL?

  6. Karen says:

Oh man, this music is my childhood, seriously.

  7. dazyndara says:

Thank you Jurassic Mark for this amazing liveblog experience!

Now taking suggestions for the next review-less liveblog.

    IDEAS:

    – A Miyazaki marathon where we schedule all the movies with 30 min breaks in between so people can jump in and out when they want.
    – There Will Be Blood
    – Alien
    – Disney marathon
    – PIXAR marathon

    DISCUSS.

    • knut_knut says:

      MIYAZAKI MARATHON

      <img src="http://i.imgur.com/G0FnI.gif">

    • ScarlettMi says:

Alien. I really need to revisit that movie before "Prometheus" comes out.

    • Karen says:

PIXAR! Though there will be large chunks of each movie where I will be sobbing too hard to type. I'd love to do liveblogs for some of the Disney fairytales too.

    • dazyndara says:

MIYAZAKI MARATHON !!!!!! Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!
Though if we watch Grave of the Fireflies then I will cry all the tears – it's the only movie where I've actually had to pause it cause I was sobbing so hard 🙁

      • knut_knut says:

I don't even think I own that one because I cried too hard watching it. I can't have it in the house

      • settlingforhistory says:

I love Grave of the Fireflies, but it left me in tears and I was still sad days after watching it.

      • giishu says:

I haven't seen this (yet). Now I'm a bit afraid to watch it, because I know I'll probably bawl my eyes out AND I NEED MY EYES.

Hmm. Perhaps I could watch it once…

        • dazyndara says:

I really do recommend it, despite the crying. It's a beautiful, beautiful movie, and I think it's a really important film.

      • Zoli says:

I flat-out refuse to watch Grave of the Fireflies. I just won't. I'm sure it's a beautiful work of cinema, but on the list of things I never need to do, one of them is watch two children starve to death. DDDD:

However, I will definitely jump in for a Spirited Away liveblog. Probably nothing else, because the time, I do not has it. Also, I can only rarely rewatch Mononoke because DEAR GOD THE WORM-THINGS ON THE DEMON BOARS. DDDD: The effects in that movie creep me the fuck out.

    • I just watched all four Alien movies in preparation for Prometheus! So I'd enjoy seeing people's reactions.

    • @bonez565 says:

Miyazaki or Pixar would be awesome

    • tzikeh says:

Miyazaki is my first vote, followed by Alien and There Will Be Blood in a tie.

I am staying away from Disney and Pixar because of their ridiculously EPIC sexism and (to a lesser extent) racism problems.

      • skuly says:

…how on this bloody Earth could Pixar be considered racist or sexist to any extent, let alone an “epic” one?

    • stefb4 says:

      OMG MIYAZAKI MARATHON!!!!

Except the ones I looked for aren't on Netflix….but I own 'Howl's Moving Castle'!!!

OR DISNEY. I WOULD LOVE A DISNEY MARATHON. I HAVE DISNEY THINGS.

      • settlingforhistory says:

OR DISNEY. I WOULD LOVE A DISNEY MARATHON. I HAVE DISNEY THINGS.

Yes, a Disney marathon would be the only one I'm prepared for.
The others would bankrupt me, because I can't stream them.
It's the same with LotR. I can't take part in the liveblog, because the extended versions cost €50 each.

        • stefb4 says:

Yeah, Disney would be the only one I'm really prepared for too. I wasn't even prepared for this liveblog (JP was on AMC yesterday though, so I just missed the first half-hour and my memory is fuzzy on how it played out).

I am surprisingly unprepared for Pixar, despite seeing every film except Cars. I think I only own 'Finding Nemo' and my 'Toy Story' is in the clutches of my six-year old cousin who apparently has a different definition of 'borrowing' than I do.

    • karate0kat says:

      ALIEN/ALIENS TOTALLY!

I also approve of Miyazaki marathon. Also the Mummy movies with Brendan Frasier. But only the first 2 – the 3rd one doesn't exist.

Maybe a Mel Brooks marathon. Young Frankenstein anyone?

    • THE MIST.

      YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO.

      STEPHEN KING MARATHON

    • Patrick721 says:

Mark. You like Horror movies, right?
there should be a 1408 liveblog. Because that is one of my favorite movies ever, and it's an awesome horror movie that doesn't resort to fountains of gore.

(I still remember seeing it in theatres when my dad and I were waiting for the midnight release of Deathly Hallows.)

  10. MsSméagol says:

"Original soundtrack on MCA CDs and cassettes". Awwwww, I miss cassettes.

  11. Story time:

When my brother was three at our family's camping trip, he want up to our uncle's friend, who he didn't know very well, got really close to his ear and started singing the Jurassic Park theme like

na na na NA NA na na na NA NA

  12. monkeybutter says:

okay i made this while downloading the jurassic park theme (the beginning of the hollywood bowl version of which sounds like it's from final fantasy). i think i'm done with the movie for today. until next time, jeff,

  13. ABBryant says:

GAH! missed the liveblog because of Puppy Bowl VIII

  14. Karen says:

Good lord, I just remembered this. Anyone else remember playing the Jurassic Park Nintendo game?

  15. amyalices says:

    DAMN I MISSED THIS.

May have to get a copy and watch it again anyhow – I totally forgot Richard Attenborough was in this! HE GAVE ME MY DEGREE AT GRADUATION. And also Ben Kingsley an honorary one, and it all dissolved in a pile of luvvie speeches. Surreal day. :S

    /cool story bro

  16. WHERE THE HELL IS THE TIMMY GOT HOT DISCUSSION. I AM DISAPPOINT Y'ALL

  17. minorthalia says:

This looks like it was so awesome I created an account just to join in with the next one. I've lurked around Mark Reads/Watches/Embarks upon Various Adventures since Harry Potter, and ONLY NOW do I get an account.

One of my favourite things about having digital TV finally is the numerous repeats of this movie on various channels. I NEVER UNDERSTOOD THE GLORY OF JEFF GOLDBLUM UNTIL THEN.

  18. Jamie says:

    Disappointed I missed this.

I remember the first time I watched Jurassic Park. It was in my third grade class. When it got to the part where the T-rex stares the girl in the face, ate the guy in the bathroom then continued to wreak havoc, I cried. I guess it must have been scary, though I don't really remember feeling scared. Maybe it was too realistic for me. They had to send me out into the hall.

I thought the movie was ok subsequent times I watched it though.
