Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’ Liveblog: The Impossible Astronaut

IT’S BACK!!!! After a long wait for the rest of the world and like…three weeks for yours truly, Doctor Who has returned to our television screens! As promised, this is the first of our weekly liveblogs for the new episodes of the sixth series. Join us!

A;LKSDJF A;LKDJSF A;DJSHFAKSDLJF I AM SO EXCITED

Stetsons are cool.

So I know the obvious question is brewing in your brain. BUT MARK, HOW DO WE HAVE A LIVEBLOG FOR SOMETHING THAT AIRS AT DIFFERENT TIMES ALL OVER THE WORLD? Don’t worry, my children, I will show you the way.

This liveblog starts relative to you. So if it is airing on your television, start liveblogging away in the comments. We already do this with Fringe and it works rather nicely. To avoid seeing spoilery comments regarding the episode from past livebloggers, I merely stay on the first page of comments and comment away, only going back after it’s over in order to comment on what other people said.

Sound fine? Just make sure not to post spoilers before this episode airs.

The review for “The Impossible Astronaut” will go up on Monday! Huzzah! Enjoy, Watchers!

Not a liveblog, just going to post my thoughts a bit.

    YESSS MORE DOCTOR WHO.

I will forever be laughing at the painting+opening scene. STILL HYSTERICAL.
This episode was excellent, and I called the Amy reveal, and the revelation 10 minutes in. (Thank you, preview clip #2.)

    CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK. I WAS SCREAMING 'I WAS RIGHT' about Amy. IT WAS FUN;

  2. avpmlessthan3 says:

The only way I could watch this was if I went to my aunt's house. She get's her cable streamed in from the east coast, so I got to see The Impossible Astronaut THREE WHOLE HOURS EARLY YAY ME. Let's get this show on the road.

GAHH ALL THE RIVER/DOCTOR. CAN'T DECIDE IF YAY OR NAY.

BUT AT LEAST THE SILENCE ARE GOOD DRESSERS.

    <img src="http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac22/xLiveLoveTossx/silence.png">

OH, AND RORY WTF PLEASE BE OK OR I'LL KILL YOU FOR REAL THIS TIME.

  3. celestineangel says:

    Okay. So.

I had a theory that for a second there really excited me because I thought I'd figured out Moffatt's MASTER PLAN. GUYS I WAS A GENIUS FOR LIKE THREE SECONDS.

Then I realized it wouldn't work, based on River's own words.

But now I really, really want fanfic where River is the daughter of Rory and Amy Pond, and when they find out Rory tries to act all fatherly toward her and River's basically like "Shut up, Dad. Now. Let's go get in trouble!"

    • andreah1234 says:

That would be really awesome. Just sayin' .

And everything is better with Rory in it. Now Dad!Rory would just be even more incredible. That would reach a really really high level on cute.

  4. andreah1234 says:

Oh and I forgot: FIRST LIVEBLOG FTW.

AND, RORY. HOW COULD I FORGET RORY. It was The Silence I swear. Eh, I mean, What was I saying? Oh yeah, RORY. PLEASE BE OK. But, ok from what? I KEEP FORGETING.

    DUM DUM DUM…

Thank you for even MORE nightmares, Moffat. Geez. Eh, wait, what nightmares again?

  5. agrinningfool says:

DUDE. AMY + NAUSEA = PREGGERS.

RIVER + NAUSEA = PREGGERS?!?! WHAT?!

  6. SusanBones says:

How can Amy be pregnant? It just doesn't seem right. Could it be just some sort of alien mind control or something? I just can't see it becoming a real storyline.

    • Mandi says:

Same here. I think they were implying River is pregnant, too. After she saw the creepy aliens and forgot them… They make you pregnant with the forgotten memory!!! Does this mean Rory will be pregnant too??

      • rewritten says:

I think it's just that the presence of the Silence make people feel sick. But Amy being pregnant was a given for me, although Moffat said on Confidential "it's all about that pregnancy" so I'm preparing myself for the worst. I think she might lose the baby.

    • buriedbooks says:

Given River's nausea a bit after seeing the Silence, maybe it's a combination of "There's something really important I need to tell him but I'm not sure what"+"not feeling well"+"married" somehow resulting in her thinking she's pregnant, or at least that being the first thing to come up when she tries to tell him what's going on.

  7. Avit says:

Watching alone at one in the morning, not best idea ever.

    Guys I need a hug 🙁

  8. vikinhaw says:

I didn't make it back in time for to watch it on tv. 🙁

The Silence are the creepist thing ever. Their tiny 'mouths(?)' remind me of dementors for some reason. Maybe cause I think they'll suck my soul.

Oh! Oh! the ship is the one from The Lodger. At least it looked like it to me. *goes to check*

  9. Shay_Guy says:

    OK, let's see…

    1) So when did they get back from their honeymoon? Their wedding was June 26, they last saw the Doctor in person two months before that first scene, and the summons said April 22. (Same "present day, present time" gag, but it's a day early.) How much time passed between that scene and the Utah meeting? Also, looks like it was pretty close to the Arizona border.

    2) I…didn't cry. At all. Is that normal? I was just like "Uh, OK. That…happened. That was definitely a thing that happened. Now then, where are you going with this, Moffat?"

    3) It was a little annoying how long it took Amy to figure out the time displacement; I caught on the moment he walked out of the bathroom.

    4) 1969 is easy to reach. Relevant to Blink y/y?

    5) Not a lot of American family shows would explicitly feature Nixon, even if they involved time travel.

    6) Nobody brought up the question of why the girl would call once a day — no more, no less. One of several questions for Day of the Moon, I suppose.

    7) You've got a twisted sense of humor, TARDIS.

    8) "They're Americans!" Living in the Gun-Rack State as I do, I approve of this gag.

    9) The memory bit is oddly similar to an plot point I thought of for a story of my own.

    10) Was the fellow in the bathroom actually referring to the Doctor's death, or was that just what we're supposed to think?

    11) "On no account follow me into this box and close the door behind you!" Maybe Eleven's getting the hang of how humans think after all?

    12) "…two thousand and eleven…" GAH! River, it's "twenty-eleven!"

    13) River and the Doctor can't be meeting entirely back-to-front, or there wouldn't be any need for the diaries. Besides, the last time she saw the Doctor (from her perspective) MUST'VE been before the Stetson-shooting for him too, and they both remembered Jim the Fish. And for all we know, this could be post-Pandorica for her.

    14) The first time she ever met him, she was "an impressionable young girl" and he knew everything about her. Well, that rules out the Future Amy theory and my Future Sally Sparrow theory.

    15) It's the Not a TARDIS! Well, we knew it was going to be showing up, didn't we? Possibly connected to whatever's killed hundreds of Time Lords?

    16) Because he had what problems?

    17) My theory: Amy's just misinterpreting her nausea and the vague impression on her memories of having something important to tell the Doctor.

    18) Ah, so that's what the things on her face in the S6 trailer were! Tracking the number of times they've seen them, maybe? Considering how many of them there are, that's a pretty scary thought.

    19) Speaking of said trailer, guess that accounts for most of the shots from it.

    • jennywildcat says:

      1) They shot the Utah scenes in Goblin Valley and Valley of the Gods which are close to the Utah-Arizona border.

      4) The Doctor and Martha did indeed get sent back to 1969 in "Blink"

      17) I like your thinking. Seriously – why in the world would Amy choose that moment to reveal her pregnancy to the Doctor? Unless Moff has other motives in there, but I don't see the point.

      • Shay_Guy says:

I'm guessing that the latitude and longitude were taken from the actual spot they were shooting in. Seems like a Moffat thing to do.

    • Shay_Guy says:

Can't believe I didn't think to say it:

"I can't believe they killed the main character in the first scene!"

    • Wookie_Monster says:

I didn't cry either. Why should we? Maybe some little kids were fooled, but we all KNOW it's just Moffat being clever with us.

    • badaboosh says:

      12) it's two thousand and eleven! 😛

(no, seriously, I've never heard anybody say twenty-eleven. that sounds kind of…..stupid? I don't mean to offend. Well, I guess it depends where you come from then.

      • Andrew says:

        Deffo twenty-eleven to me 😛

      • Stuart says:

Did you say "one thousand nine hundred and ninety nine" too?

Personally I'm really frustrated it's taken humanity so long to re-apply the same convention to the 2000s as they used for EVERY OTHER YEAR EVER.

Of COURSE it's "Twenty eleven" just like it was "Nineteen eleven" in 1911.

        • sarasingsout says:

Ditto. Maybe it's more of a problem for younger people? I was born in '87, and I'm rabid about "twenty eleven", but my cousin born in '97 just looks at me like I'm crazy when I say it.

          • Jja1987 says:

Nope, I was born in 1987 as well, and 'twenty eleven' just sounds forced and unnatural English to me. I don't think I've heard many people using anything other than 'two thousand and x', though I will concede it doesn't make much sense (and it's clearly 'nineteen eleven' and 'twenty-one eleven'). *shrugs* I assume it depends on where you're from, as badaboosh said.

            • sarasingsout says:

Hmm. What about "twenty twelve" then? Personally, I find it irresistibly alliterative.

              • Jja1987 says:

Hmm. I think I can cope with 'twenty twelve' better, but I think that's mainly because of the film existing? I'd still *say* 'two thousand and twelve' though. 🙂

                • Donald G says:

I'm still in the "two thousand (eleven)" stage, and I'm 44 years old. I think I'll switch over to the "twenty-" stage in 2013. Blame it on all those years growing up of hearing "Two Thousand and One: A Space Odyssey".

If not 2013, I'll definitely switch over in time for 2020 ("Twenty-twenty").

        • Kaybee42 says:

Well for the noughties it wouldn't have really worked- twenty seven sounds like 27 and twenty oh one->nine doesn't work in my mind… twenty oh… yeah I can't make it sound right… but yeah I definitely agree on twenty ten and twenty eleven 🙂

          • Mandi says:

That's what I was thinking. I'm still stuck from saying two thousand-one and so on, so I just say two thousand-eleven. Not sure if I'll ever switch over…. Might be saying two thousand-forty nine in the future 😉

    • Aimee says:

I agree with 17 as well. I don't think the nausea is pregnancy at all. I think the nausea comes when you are being compelled to do something by the monsters. I totally think they have the power not only to remove memories, but they have the power to inception it all up in here.

      1) Amy felt sick after seeing the one in the oval office then felt the urge to go to the restroom to feel better.
      2) After the monster told her what it wanted to tell her she felt better outside of the bathroom, and she was compelled to tell the Doctor something.
      3) River Song saw a bunch of them, forgot them, then came back with the "all clear" line, then she felt compelled to look again, and look more deeply into the tunnels, and SHE was feeling sick.
      4) When Amy had to, had to, absolutely must right now be at this moment tell the Doctor about her "pregnancy," she was straight up about to hurl, she was so sick. And once she told him she was fine, and she picked up the gun and shot the kid without a flinch.

      • Shay_Guy says:

Compulsion wasn't something I'd thought of! Good one.

      • I REALLY like this theory. Whether or not the pregnancy bit is true is still to be seen (after all, being compelled to tell doesn't absolutely make it a lie), but either way I think you're on to something here.

    • Kaybee42 says:

      3) It was a little annoying how long t took Amy to figure out the time displacement; I caught on the moment he walked out of the bathroom.
Yeah but we're watching from a perspective of 'we are watching a tv programme named after the doctor with many many years left in it's life- the doctor isn't dead' whereas as far as Amy is concerned she just watched the doctor die, so I forgive her. That's also why I didn't cry- I just kind of looked gobsmacked for the entire episode with my hands clutching at my hair!

      • Shay_Guy says:

She's a time traveler, though. She's had time to get used to the idea of timelines intersecting at weird points — heck, she's met River twice before, even if she doesn't know about her death. Plus there's The Big Bang, which she's had months to figure out.

I'm not remotely bothered by her thinking the death was real. The problem is thinking she'll never see him alive again. Or to put it differently, the problem with "The Doctor is dead" isn't "dead," it's "is." Unless he's with you, there's no such thing as "now."

    • ThreeBooks says:

18 scares the poop out of me. 🙁

  10. Shay_Guy says:

Wait, Ben and Glory? What about them?

  11. Yazzydream says:

Ok, so was I the only one who was bitterly sadly reminded of Donna the whole time??? “Spaceman”. Bringing back old wounds everytime she said it. :((((((

  12. hallowsnothorcruxes says:

Is there any show Mark Sheppard hasn't appeared in?

    • ThreeBooks says:

I was going to say "Heroes," because it's American and his standards can't be low enough to go on that show, but then I remembered that Heroes was six seasons long (or something) and was actually pretty good at first.

  13. MsPrufrock says:

Excellent. Now. Do we suspect that there may be some kind of connection between Ben and Glory?

  14. MsPrufrock says:

I must admit that the Silence causing everyone to forget the moment they looked away reminded me a bit of the unnamed god from "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman.

Also, every time Mark Sheppard came on screen, I kept thinking of Badger. "Where is his very fine hat and perhaps his apple peeler?" I wanted to ask.

  15. AussieReader says:

Just commenting without reading to say Australians are very sad :'(

I'll read this next week. Am I going to be a week behind all series?

    • agrinningfool says:

You poor Australians! How dare the UK do that to you!

    • trash_addict says:

Yeah I think it's safe to presume that the ABC will be behind the whole time, if for no reason other than they seem to like playing it Saturday nights and we get to that point before the UK and US. I'm sad I feel the need to download but I would get so spoilered in that intervening week – I'd never be able to use my Tumblr again, for one thing…

  16. Will_Da_Zuner says:

Ok so I was watching the episode when my mum opened the sliding door to outside and WHY THE HELL DOES THE SLIDING DOOR MAKE THE EXACT SAME NOISE AS THE CREEPY MUSIC! ARGHGHGGAEDHGERFSHG

  17. Will_Da_Zuner says:

Also funny quote between me and my friend while watching.

    (scene with River in Stormcage)
Me: Why is is always raining there?
    Friend: It is called STORMcage.

  18. Meadow says:

Why was Amy drinking wine on the beach while she's PREGNANT????
    Really, WTF Amy.

    • doesntsparkle says:

Some OBGYN's actually recommend a little wine now and then while pregnant.

    • agrinningfool says:

I have a feeling she didn't 'know' she was pregnant. I am subscribing to an above commenter that the 'pregnancy' thing isn't real.. and it's either the creatures or something else.

    • echinodermata says:

There's actually some conflict over how safe it is for a pregnant woman to drink the occasional glass of wine. But a lot of sources say so long as it's not chronic drinking, it's fine.

    • FlameRaven says:

Ehhh… I don't think she IS pregnant. It's possible, but…hm, it just doesn't seem right (also, River was "sick" too.) I think it's more probably the Silence/crazy aliens messing with her head and memories.

    • trash_addict says:

I feel that this might be a sign that she's not *actually* pregnant.

  19. ffyona says:

AMAZING. My one complaint? The BBC America logo being placed above BBC Cymru logo. I love that the US are getting to watch it in real time and that they finally filmed over there but… Doctor who does not belong to BBCA. I know I'm ridiculously touchy about this but I get so protective of our British exports. Maybe they just did that in honour of filming in the US, presumably in collaboration with BBCA?

    • Kirby says:

I think that it was just because it was filmed in America, and therefore done by BBCA. I hope so anyway. I got pretty annoyed when I saw it too 😛

      • Sparkie says:

But most of it wasn't filmed in America, I'm pretty sure all the sets-like the Oval Office one-were in Wales as per usual.

        • Sparkie says:

I feel I should've added I don't have a big problem with BBCA logo at the top, does it really matter? Maybe if they do it in every episode of the series it'd be a bit odd, but otherwise…

  20. VicarPants says:

Anyone else feeling the sexual tension between Eleven and River is at an ALL TIME HIGH? My gosh, I feel like I'm intruding every time they look at each other.

  21. Fusionman29 says:

Well while I didn't post here I have 2 things to say.

    1. The Silents remind me of Dementors with lighting. Sith Dementors.

    2.YGBUR,KBDKIB V,IKJBVDSLIB VKADSN

  22. Stuart says:

I got admin-deleted for making this reference in the past. The show in question is on Mark's list to be watched…

  23. avpmlessthan3 says:

The only way for me to deal with monsters as goddamn fucking creepy as the Silence is to make fun of them.

    <img src="http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac22/xLiveLoveTossx/silencewillfall.png">

  24. CharlieInWonderland says:

Dis anyone else notice the doctor was acting very undoctor like after he died?

    • ThreeBooks says:

…yeah. He was kind of still and not breathing. xD

Sarcasm aside, before he died he was also so very sad and quiet. I didn't really appreciate it until my re-watch.

I thought I'd never get done saving you.

      ;_; nooooo

      • CharlieInWonderland says:

That one line after he died sort of stuck out to me.
About not going somewhere on the orders of a mysterious thing.

THATS EXACTLY THE KIND OF THING YOU ALWAYS DO.

        • ThreeBooks says:

Ooooh! Yeah, the scene on the TARDIS is kind of weird to me. I know he's antsy that they're obviously not telling him about someone who could get him a letter, but seriously Doctor.

  25. CharlieInWonderland says:

    Also, I have a theory.
If Amy was preggers…Did she just shoot her own kid?
    Please no.
    Paradoxes everywhere.

  26. avpmlessthan3 says:

    WAIT A SECOND.

    <img src="http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac22/xLiveLoveTossx/10tardis.png">

DON'T FUCK WITH ME MOFFAT, I'M NOW EXPECTING TEN TO COME SAVE THE DAY. THAT OR BE THE PERSON INSIDE THE SPACE SUIT. THAT WOULD BE A TWIST WOULDN'T IT?

    <img src="http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac22/xLiveLoveTossx/moffat.gif">

    • CuriousApe says:

OMG! Wow, I love that idea. This would be the most awesome thing ever! I really want Ten to save the day. Or at least help them. Or whatever. Ooooh, please let there be more timey-wimey-ball-stuff. I am so ridiculously excited right now and I can't express it properly, aaahhhhhh

    • ThreeBooks says:

Since there is 10s TARDIS, I expect to see Donna.

(My leaps of intuition MAKE PERFECT SENSE. >:| )

    • agrinningfool says:

Its to you to make the decision the path of your organization – either opting to remain small by creating work only reserved for yourself or growing into an enterprise with large revenue.
