Mark Watches ‘Battlestar Galactica’: S02E07 – Home, Part II

In the seventh episode of the second season of Battlestar Galactica, HOLY SHIT WHAT DID I JUST WATCH. Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Battlestar Galactica.

Up until “Home, Part II,” Battlestar Galactica has been an intensely realistic show combining survival action with political theories, from martial law to the separation of church and state. And not to belittle any of that, as it’s all been fascinating and entertaining, but in just a single episode, SHIT HAS GOTTEN SO WEIRD. Oh my god, the end of “Home, Part II” just changed WHAT THE ENTIRE SHOW IS ABOUT. Oh my god.

After the horrifying end to the first part of this story, the writers show us how the loss of Elosha has truly hurt Laura Roslin. Elosha was more than just a friend to Roslin, more than a spiritual guide. She believed in her, and she gave her the strength to make the decision to come to Kobol in the first place. It’s incredibly hard to watch, but Mary McDonnell portrays this heartbreak believably. It doesn’t need to be stated, as the show does this so often, but what we see here from many of the characters is remarkably realistic, and I rarely question why any of these people behave in the way that they do.

In that sense (and given what I’d wrote about earlier this week regarding characters not asking questions), I was ECSTATIC that Baltar finally started outright asking Six who she was. And if any character would process the information in the most scientific manner imaginable, it would be Baltar. So….is he merely imagining this all? When she appeared to him in more casual clothing, I became instantly confused, and, more than ever, I wanted to know the mechanics of how Six could appear in the way she could. It’s weird that while I do question her existence, I’ve sort of just accepted that she’s always going to be here. And while I must admit that I didn’t like the negative implications of being “crazy,” I did wonder if this all was a result of Baltar’s guilt. She can affect him physically, and the scene in the MRI with Dr. Cottle proves that. He can’t just ignore her because her touch is incredibly real to him, yet no one else can see her.

And by the end of the episode, we see how entwined Baltar’s story is with what happens on Kobol. Without Elosha to read the scriptures and interpret them, Roslin is largely left on her own. We even see how Adama realizes how difficult this is going to be as he plans out a recon mission to meet up with her, bringing Tyrol and Billy along with him. I don’t know that Adama is an atheist in the way that we would use it in our society, but he, Billy, and Gaeta all seem rather flabbergasted by the theological details of this mission. But Adama is determined to make peace with Roslin, and I like that asserts that it’s irrelevant whether Roslin’s beliefs are delusions or fact: she believes that she has visions, and that’s all he needs to know.

Yet as good as I felt about Adama heading to Kobol to meet up with his son, Starbuck, and Roslin, the sub-plot involving Boomer, Zarek, and Meier was making me feel awful. Certainly, the appearance of Boomer has made everything awkward, and Zarek and Meier (mostly Meier) want to exploit the fact that her life is at risk just by her being there. And christ, I must admit that despite agreeing that Boomer is her own person, I still have conflicting emotions about her future. I think it’s because, like everyone else, I am ignorant about how these humanoid Cylons work. I do like the idea that Boomer was able to separate herself from the other Cylons through love, and that by giving herself over to a uniquely human emotion, she could find her own agency and identity that was notprogramming. But Galactica!Boomer (OMG FANDOM TERMINOLOGY I AM BEING MADE AWARE OF IT) was her own person, too, for years before she was activated. It’s not even that I mistrust Boomer’s words. I believe she is telling the truth. But what if the Cylons are letting her continue to do all of this until she’s fully in the fleet before activating her?

It’s why I despise Meier for what he does, and I’m glad that Zarek showed more and more reluctance to agree to this plot, though I don’t want to make it sound like he redeems himself by the end of this. Dude is shady and certainly more concerned with his own political future. Still, he does become increasingly uncomfortable with this plan, but Meier seemed to want to pull it off regardless. THAT WORKED OUT WELL, DIDN’T IT? But I was most concerned about Boomer because she seemed to believe wholly that she would not survive for very long. It certainly did not help that when Adama finally found Roslin’s camp (!!!!!!! BEST REUNION EVER !!!!), he greeted Boomer with a hug to her throat! I was intrigued by the idea that Adama was the one to put forth the idea to Tyrol that the Cylons weren’t just machines, yet his instant reaction was to treat this second copy of Boomer as nothing more than a killing machine. Still, even though Caprica!Boomer is a different person, I can’t say I’m shocked that this was his first reaction. AH THIS IS ALL SO COMPLICATED TO NAVIGATE. Yet I love it! None of the answers to these questions are at all easy to figure out, and I appreciate that the show isn’t making it a black-and-white matter.

BUT SERIOUSLY, was anyone else immensely creeped out when Boomer responded to the question Adama asked over her copy’s very much dead body? I get that there’s some sort of general knowledge base that the Cylons have access to, and that they can also share experiences and memories, BUT HOW THE FUCK IS THIS POSSIBLE. That body was dead! IS THERE A MICROPHONE IN A HUMANOID CYLON BODY. Oh god, I truly understand nothing.

Yet as fucked up and confusing as this all is, the much-needed reunion between Adama and his son, Starbuck, and Roslin is one of three genuinely smile-inducing scenes in “Home, Part II.” There is that awkward reluctance when Lee sees his father, but knowing how stoic Adama is, I couldn’t help but tear up just a bit when he started to cry. I don’t think Adama is necessarily averse to showing emotion, as he’s clearly a passionate person, but it’s still rare to see something this far on one spectrum. He brushes the hair out of Starbuck’s eyes, and you can tell by the way that he looks at her that he views her like she is his own daughter. All of the tears were building up in my eyes at this point. But nothing made me happier than the look of pure joy on Roslin’s face as she saw Billy, and I hope that this makes Billy realize just how much Roslin cares about him.

It might be due to the circumstances, especially since Adama is just glad to be alive and walking around, but the conversation he has with Roslin about their recent disagreement/fight was wonderful to watch. Again, I enjoy how often this show has characters speak so plainly and directly, with both willing to admit their mistakes, and for Adama to take the courage to admit that Roslin technically saved all of their lives, and that he is grateful for it. It’s a sign of faith in her, I think, that doesn’t ignore their disagreements, but still lets her know that he respects her. That’s what I like about their relationship, even if it sometimes teeters on the inane. Ultimately, the two greatly respect one another, and it’s refreshing to see that portrayed as it is.

But Adama’s presence isn’t all joy and flowers and puppy dog hugs. As I said before, I don’t think that Tom Zarek had an actual change of heart and suddenly finds it immoral to murder Lee Adama. The dude just isn’t concerned with such things. But he is practical about his plans to benefit himself, and killing Lee with the Commander around is about the worst idea imaginable. Unfortunately, Meier is an UTTER BIGOT and a MASSIVE FOOL and decides he is going to go ahead with it anyway. And who does he recruit for his short-sighted plan? BOOMER. As if she wasn’t already volatile enough, Meier convinces Boomer that this is her only chance to assert her right to survive. I didn’t initially think she would ever go through with it, but then she reveals to Helo that she has to do something to keep herself alive, to prove that she is not just a machine, and that he has to trust her on it.

Well, it’s pretty much spelled out, isn’t it? That’s what I thought. I believed that she would send a message that treating her like nothing more than a machine would not be tolerated, and what better way to do that than to shoot the man who blamed her for his near-death? WHY DOES THIS SHOW MAKE MY STOMACH AND HEART HURT SO BADLY? I just want these people to be happy, and after the touching reunion scene, it’s right back to DOOM AND GLOOM AND DEATH. Oh god WHY.

Except I bought it all, hook, line, and sinker. When Boomer raised her gun, I thought we’d see her death. Again. (Which, by the way, is something I find amazing about this show. Boomer died, and the very next episode, there she was, and it wasn’t a ghost and it didn’t cancel out her death. BRAVO.) BUT SHE TRICKED ME. Best trick ever, AMIRITE. It’s brilliant, and now I see why she told Helo that he would need to trust her. The appearance was that she would betray Adama again, but she was actually saving his life and gunning down that asshole, Meier. It’s a gesture of good faith, and a smart one at that. WILL WE SEE MORE OF THESE? Please, please, please let that be so. I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO GET ALONG, OKAY?

All right, let’s do it. Let’s talk about it. The Tomb of Athena. WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH? As soon as Starbuck placed the Arrow of Apollo on Sagittaron and it suddenly flashed to that bizarre grassy hill, I was so shocked that I dropped an open bottle of water on the floor and had to pause the episode so I could clean it up. I SWEAR I AM AN ADULT. So, freaking out ALL OVER THE PLACE, I rewound to the beginning of the scene and still could not believe what I saw. Stone pillars with the symbols of the tribes of the Twelve Colonies. Starbuck says it out loud: They are on a representation of Earth. (Or actual Earth???) They are seeing what they would see if they were there, which allows Lee to point out that one can see the Lagoon Nebula from earth.

THEY NOW KNOW THE DIRECTION IN WHICH TO TRAVEL TO FIND EARTH. THIS IS IN SEASON TWO. I thought this moment wouldn’t happen for MANY, MANY episodes, but here we are. Which means….shit, my idea of the scope of the show just exploded.

I was a bit confused as to what had happened mostly because all of a sudden, the episode flashed to the Galactica. It took me until later in the day to realize that they didn’t get physically transported to Earth. It was more like a vision, but one HELL of a weird vision. So yeah, that confused me SO MUCH initially, and I started questioning whether it all happened at all, and whether the standing ovation given to Roslin was real, too. (Thankfully, it was very real.)

And after all of this, after the show’s mythology is changed in a fantastic way, after all of the emotional interactions and drama, “Home, Part II” saved one last surprise for me. Knowing that he holds no Cylon chip in his brain, nor is he simply imagining her, Baltar quite plainly asks Six who she is.

She’s an angel of God, sent to protect Baltar “until the end of the human race.”

WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?!?!

There was so much heartwarmth in this episode that I was sure Roslin was going to drop dead on the spot in the final scene when everyone applauded her. I mean, she's done what she was supposed to do, right? That makes her expendable now.

    • monkeybutter says:

Hush! Don't say such a thing! Let me have like five minutes with all the characters I like alive and well, and only moderately at each other's throats!

    • psycicflower says:

I mean, she's done what she was supposed to do, right? That makes her expendable now.

*sticks fingers in ears* La la la, I'm not listening. Roslin will live forever and ever.

    • pica_scribit says:

Holy shit! Wasn't expecting to get first comment!

I had so many thoughts about this episode. I loved all the lovey-huggy-fuzzy-forgiveness. Adama is just a straight-up awesome guy. Such a dad. (The look on Starbuck's face! "I'm sorry, Daddy!") And we got our awkward "reunion" between Tyrol and Boomer. And Lee and Kara are being cozy again.

The whole thing with Meier…. I kind of expected him to die, since he was the only character on Kobol whose death wouldn't have a big effect on things. I also felt like he was introduced as a way to start making Zarek look more sympathetic. Zarek's bad qualities seemed to be shunted off into Meier. I'm also patting myself on the back for guessing correctly that Boomer was planning to turn on Meier all along. It just seemed really obvious to me.

So, yay! Earth map! Although trying to find one small planet that is within visual range of one specific nebula still seems like an enormously daunting task. Surely it would be better to pick out three recognisable celestial bodies and triangulate to narrow it down?

      • echinodermata says:

On Earth, you can see those constellations. So it's the nebula plus star charts, I guess.

        • pica_scribit says:

But it's hard to tell which stars make up those constellations are if you're not already on (or near) earth. There are a whole lot of star in the universe, and which ones are brightest depends on where you are.

          • echinodermata says:

To my mind, it’s not about figuring out which stars make up the constellations but rather finding the point in space in which at that location, it will look like the stars are arranged in a pattern matching those 12 constellations. The issue is you shouldn’t be able to see those 12 constellations anywhere but Earth. I imagine it as if you’re given a 3D map of the stars and you explore it and rotate it at all angles until you find the perspective that would garner those constellations.

EDIT: I want to clarify the broader point which is that with the nebula, they know the neighborhood in which to look, but that’s all. With the constellations, they can theoretically pinpoint the location of Earth without having to physically explore every planet in the nebula’s neighborhood until they find the one that’s most likely Earth.

      • notemily says:

Yeah, since you know Kobol exacts "a price in blood," it makes sense that Meier and the redshirt without a name were the ones to die in this episode.

I don't think Zarek is necessarily BETTER than Meier, morally–he's just more calculating. He knows when to bide his time and when to act. Meier was foolish for wanting to go through with the plan even though the circumstances had changed completely.

    Mini-list time!
    1. Tricia Helfer/Six in sweats, giggling away – SO ADORABLE! (even though it was a nasty thing to do to Baltar). I want to be her friend and have a slumber party!
    2. THE REUNIONS! ALL THE TEARS EVER!
    3. SHARON! You need to work on your entrances. AND I’M SORRY I DOUBTED YOU AND WANTED TO THROW YOU OUT OF AIRLOCK FOR ABOUT…5 MINUTES. So far my attitude towards the Cylons has been similar to that held by Starbuck- they’re not humans, they’re machines programmed to look, think, and act like humans- but Sharon is really making me question that belief. I think this is furthered by the fact that the show hasn’t flat out explained how the Cylons work (they bleed and can be “killed” but they’re incredibly strong? They have unique personalities that are downloadable?) therefore making the line between human and Cylon less obvious.
    4. OMG EARTH. HOW DID THEY GET THERE? WAS THAT JUST A PROJECTION? WAS IT REAL? ANSWERS PLEASE. I also can’t get over how arts and craftsy that arrow looks

I hope everyone who is in the hurricane’s path stays safe this weekend!

    edit: con't below

    • knut_knut says:

I should mention that one thing I just do not get about Caprica!Boomer (Ca-Boom?) is how she knows so much about Galactica!Boomer when she’s supposedly not connected to the network. Does she only have memories of up to a certain point (so before she was disconnected)? Has she always been disconnected or is this a new thing? I also can’t remember if she acknowledged either verbally or through her facial expressions if she remembers shooting Adama. I feel bad for her because everyone assumes that she and Galactica!Boomer are the exactly the same, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she turned on the humans. I just hope it doesn’t happen.

      • monkeybutter says:

Hehe, Ca-Boom. I just want to co-sign all of your questions, invite myself to the sleepover, which Katee Sackhoff will of course be attending, and take away the Gods' of Kobol gold spray paint.

        • knut_knut says:

If there is a heaven I hope it's a Mark Does Stuff, Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhoff slumber party

      • notemily says:

She specifically said to Meier, I think, that she didn't remember shooting Adama. I always assumed she has Boomer's memories up until the time Boomer left Helo on Caprica, because that's what she would need to have in order to be "Helo's Boomer." But I don't know for sure.

The Cylons can't ALL be connected ALL of the time, or else 1. They would have no need to talk to each other, 2. They would have known where Caprica Boomer was going when she ran away with Helo for reals.

        • hamnoo says:

Also, I'm fairly sure I remember Ron Moore saying on the podcast that the "And you ask why" was improvised. Apparently Grace Park was asked to come up with something frightening.
Of course, that doesn't change the finished product and the ways in which it fits into the canon.

        • cait0716 says:

As far as cylons being connected, I view them as like individual computers who all have access to the internet (or database of cylon knowledge). So they can all access it at any time, but would still need to talk about what they learn. I think when Sharon ran off with Helo she turned off her internet connection in order to hide.

  3. Results of a LiveJournal Poll Conducted on August 27, 2005

What is the Six in Baltar's head?

A manifestation of his subconscious. Supergenius is loony as a mad corsair*, yo. 7 (29.2%)

A projection/implantation of the Cylon Six. Supergenius is horny as a…well, you, Sunil. 10 (41.7%)

An Angel of God. She's like Della Reese, but hotter. 1 (4.2%)

I have a theory involving cheese and space monkeys. Let me explain in the comments. 4 (16.7%)

    I don't watch this show, but I like taking polls. 2 (8.3%)

*This is a phrase taken from The Butter Battle, a comic opera my friend wrote based on The Butter Battle Book and the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.

    • doesntsparkle says:

Space monkeys and cheese makes the most sense to me.

      • What the hell's going on with the cheese? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?

        • doesntsparkle says:

The Cylon God is in fact, a super intelligent space monkey who loves cheese. The colonial humans have become increasingly lactose intolerant over the ages and have phased cheese out of their diets. This makes it harder for the space monkey to get his cheese, so he comes up with an elaborate revenge plan.

First, he developed the humanoid Cylons and raises them as his children. They share their space father's love of cheese and hatred of humanity. We're watching his plan play out.

  4. Ryan Lohner says:

This is the first time ever in the show that everyone is in one place. That's some daring storytelling structure, but they pull it off beautifully.

I always wonder how exactly everyone got out of that VR or whatever it was of Earth. There sure didn't seem to be an exit, plus the door to the tomb had closed even if there was.

    • enigmaticagentscully says:

I thought maybe it had a time limit. Like, you get ten minutes of the projection after you put the arrow in and then it just stops and you're back in the tomb. Just a theory? I guess it doesn't matter that much.

      • NB2000 says:

Well now I'm imagining them running out of time to note down all the constellations before they get thrown out and having to go through all that business with placing the arrow again to get another go.

    • Noybusiness says:

Ron Moore's commentary says there was a cut scene where Centurions attacked the tomb. It was cut for not adding much to the episode.

  5. echinodermata says:

So, I don't root for any "side" on the humans versus Cylons thing, I just root for Sharon and for Starbuck, basically, since they're the ones that most interest me. People are more interesting than causes or philosophical debates. I don't really care if there's a grand right or wrong, I just like who I like. Is the fact that Sharon's a cylon going to bite everyone in the ass at a later date? Perhaps, but I have no qualms rooting for her now.

<img src="http://i52.tinypic.com/16kdmz9.gif" alt="Sharon hugging Tyrol, him being reluctant about it.">
Sharon loves Helo, but she also has Boomer's memories, and ooh, meeting up with the chief is a bit awkward. For both of them, clearly. Sharon has to deal with both her own emotions towards him given how she's a different Sharon than the one he knows, as well as dealing with the fact that he's understandably going to be reluctant towards her and has to deal with that rejection aspect. It's a crap situation for all of them.

And Sharon making clear who she is and where her loyalties are was a crowing moment of awesome. (Also, hot. Hello, competence kink. I see you've reared your head today.)

"I need you to know something. I'm Sharon, but I'm a different Sharon. I know who I am. I don't have hidden protocols or programs lying in wait to be activated. I make my own choices, I make my own decisions, and I need you to know that this is my choice."

<img src="http://i52.tinypic.com/20k659y.gif" alt="Sharon flipping down the gun she's pointing at Adama so it's not pointing at him anymore, after which Adama and Sharon stare at each other while Adama takes the gun from her.">
    Love it so much!

And yay family's back together! And they have an idea of how to find Earth!
<img src="http://i56.tinypic.com/ick49g.gif" alt="The fleet aplauding Roslin and her looking very grateful for the reception she's getting.">

    • enigmaticagentscully says:

I swear when Lee accidentally pointed his gun at Adama I thought "Well this is the most awkward moment ever committed to film."
And then a few minutes later when Sharon and the Chief met and Helo was there in the background I was like "…no, this is the most awkward moment ever committed to film."

    • monkeybutter says:

Yeah, the scene with Sharon and Tyrol, with unhappy Helo looking on in the background was so awkward. Probably worse than Lee and Kara's kiss yesterday. I also just want things to work out for the characters I like, Starbuck and Sharon especially. I love how direct Sharon was in asserting her agency, even if she still hasn't been accepted as a living, thinking being by everyone. She just has an aura of "I'm only saying this once, deal with it," though this pretty obviously isn't the end of her ordeals with the fleet.

    • Karen says:

Omg. That hug between Tyrol and Sharon was SO AWKWARD because she's with Helo now and loves Helo, but she has Boomer's memories. And Tyrol maybe still has some residual feelings. THERE ARE NO ETIQUETTE HANDBOOKS THAT DEAL WITH A SITUATION LIKE THIS.

      • notemily says:

"Dear Miss Manners, what is the correct protocol for a reunion with someone you've never met, with whom your doppelganger had a relationship that YOU remember most of, all while your new partner is a few feet away?"

    • notemily says:

Crowning Moment of Awesome FOR REALS. She's like "okay, since you don't seem to be getting this, I will literally point a gun at you just the way Boomer did, and NOT SHOOT YOU. Get it now?"

  6. Maya says:

I love that the writers of this show address the confusion that is Sharon's existence. Remembering things she never did? How bizarre is that.

Also, new (non-spoilery!) video from Bear McCreary!!!

  7. enigmaticagentscully says:

    "Laura, I forgive you."
"Thank you Bill. I didn't ask for your forgiveness."
    "Well you have it anyway."

Love that little moment. They're working together again, but still neither of them is going to apologise for their actions. They both did what they believed to be right at the time, and now they're going to move on and do what's right at this moment too. GOD it's so nice to see people just acting in a reasonable way for once. And I like that after Roslin opens up and admits to having regrets about her decision to leave the Colonies, Adama takes that as a kind of peace offering and actually reassures her that it was the right thing to do. That's why I love their interactions, their personalities just seem to compliment each other so well. Adama was right when he said that he's the only one who can reach out to Roslin. In a way, it has always been between the two of them, as they're both in unique positions of power that only the other could really understand.

Also, the shipper in me was all first name basis first name basis my ship is so canon when I first watched this. ^^

  8. I love the look on Baltar's face as Six tells him they're after the destruction of human race. It's like, "Wait, does that include me?"

Also, did Adama just nominate Billy for President? WATCH YOUR BACK BILLY.

Love the start of this episode with the contrast between team Kobol’s journey and team Galactica’s research. I also love Allegro. It’s one of my favourite tracks from the series 2 soundtrack.

I’m so glad they actual have a map to get to earth. Adama could’ve only kept his charade going for so long before people started to get suspicious. Now the fleet has a new start and a hope we know is real.
’I'm an angel of god sent here to protect you, to guide you, to love you.’ ‘To what end?’ ‘To the end of the human race.’

Even as an atheist, I'm a sucker for a good story about religion, especially religious stories that are about actual mystical and magical things happening. I think this is why the Greek and Roman mythology appeals to me so much – the gods were fallible and silly and petty and jealous and they interacted with humans constantly. So when this episode happened and I realized that they were all having a collective vision of standing on Earth, and that Six says she's an angel from God, I immediately was like…OH SHIT. IN THIS UNIVERSE MAGIC CAN HAPPEN AND MYTHS ARE REAL.

I think it appeals to my inner six-year-old that always secretly thought she should be chilling out all the time on Mount Olympus.

    • hamnoo says:

To me (atheist, too!) it's just the quiet acceptance of a good story with thoughtfully written characters and background. The fact that so many different kinds of religious beliefs, beliefs, and anti-beliefs (??) are explored so well in this story is just icing on the cake.
Anything else I won't comment on because of spoilers.

"King of the hill." "Queen of the hill thank you very much." That and their discussion of further/farther later are perfect examples of Helo/Sharon are one of my OTPs on this show. COULD YOU GUYS BE CUTER? I DON'T THINK YOU CAN? The discussion about Sharon taking matter into her own hands though…yeah that may be one of the creepiest moments so far. So creepily delivered by Grace Park. Her final speech about being her own person with no hidden programming is so much awesome.

"I'm the only one who can reach out to Roslin. It's always been between us anyway."

    "Every day is a gift."

    "No from you."

Mommy and Daddy have made up and the family is back together and it's wonderful to watch. The reunion scene is just so lovely to watch.

"I think that was the lobby" hee. I also love the way Kara says "We're standing on it." Her tone just sells how big a deal this is for them, it's like she can't quite believe she gets to say it.

YAY Space Mommy and Daddy are back together! And everyone's one big happy family again. Except for Sharon I guess. But she has Helo, so it's hard to feel sorry for her, even if she is in the brig. They're so cute together!

    • psycicflower says:

COULD YOU GUYS BE CUTER? I DON'T THINK YOU CAN?
The only way they could get any cuter is if tiny babies and fuzzy little animals were involved and they're already working on the baby part.

*draws hearts around Roslin and Adama*

    • monkeybutter says:

That and their discussion of further/farther later are perfect examples of Helo/Sharon are one of my OTPs on this show. COULD YOU GUYS BE CUTER? I DON'T THINK YOU CAN?

I love them more and more every episode. <3 <3 <3

    • Karen says:

I love Sharon/Helo so much. They just have such a great rapport.

    • notemily says:

I LOVE THOSE TWO HELO/SHARON EXCHANGES TOO. I like how even though she is still struggling to be accepted as an actual person, she's not apologetic and deferential. She's snarky and corrects his grammar.

    • cait0716 says:

That "Now Kiss" image is quickly becoming one of my favorite things on the internet. It sums up so many of my feelings.

  13. chikzdigmohawkz says:

BUT SERIOUSLY, was anyone else immensely creeped out when Boomer responded to the question Adama asked over her copy’s very much dead body? I get that there’s some sort of general knowledge base that the Cylons have access to, and that they can also share experiences and memories, BUT HOW THE FUCK IS THIS POSSIBLE. That body was dead! IS THERE A MICROPHONE IN A HUMANOID CYLON BODY. Oh god, I truly understand nothing.

I think she's referring to Adama's speech during the miniseries, where he says that the human race never asked themselves why they were worth saving.

And I just love the little part where Sharon tells Helo that she's having a girl, and there's just this look of surprise and delight on his face. Definite 'awwww' moment.

    • Noybusiness says:

That's what I think too. The fact that it's similar to a question he asked Boomer's body just makes it creepier.

  14. monkeybutter says:

I have no idea what's going on.

I really liked this episode, but I think I'm actually more confused now than when it started, despite all of the answers! The reunion made me tear up, especially Adama and Starbuck. She's been through so much shit over the past few weeks (I guess? I have no idea how time works), and the expressions on their faces killed me. It was one of those great scenes where you don't even need words to feel the full impact. Adama's relief at seeing Lee, and Roslin's joy at seeing Billy were also wonderful. I'm so happy they're all together!

I still feel awful for Sharon. She's proven herself by leading them to the Tomb of Athena (heck yeah, Sagittaron was useful and I'm weirdly happy about that) and she's asserted that she has full control over herself, they still don't see her as real. I realize part of locking her up is for her own protection, and I know they're not going to accept her right away, but I hope they do eventually. I just like her.

Aside from that, what the hell is going on? Sharon knows what Adama asked Other Sharon's body? How? Are they connected after all? So Six isn't a chip, but an angel…that answers nothing! And how is it their baby? Spiritually, I hope? Does she mean "the end of humanity" in a metaphorical sense, like the way Lyra has "ended" death by transforming it, or does she mean actual genocide? And I'm not quite clear on whether it was a representation of Earth or not, though I would assume the former. Otherwise, couldn't you just take everyone in the fleet into the tomb and zap them there? I'd love to know how they got back, too. Did they just sort of walk around in circles, poking around at the menhirs until they were in the chamber again?

Sheesh, I didn't mean to write this much about how confused I am, haha.

    • enigmaticagentscully says:

Yeah, it probably would have been better if Sharon HADN'T said that to Adama. I mean, I don't think creeping him the fuck out is really gonna help your case sweetheart.

      • hamnoo says:

Gotta love her keeping her attitude though. She also still had it when she was talking to Lee when he was STANDING WITH A GUN IN HAND in front of her cell last episode. "You don't know what the hell you're talking about."

    • chikzdigmohawkz says:

heck yeah, Sagittaron was useful and I'm weirdly happy about that

It's not weird at all…but then again, I'm a bit biased because I'm a Sagittarius, so every time characters are dismissive of Sagittarons, I'm like 'please leave my people alone, even though they're not really my people because this is fiction'.

      • elusivebreath says:

Yep, I get excited everytime someone mentions Picon (did I spell that right? I'm afraid to look it up for fear of spoilers lol).

      • monkeybutter says:

Haha, yay, I'm not alone! I don't set any store by astrology, I just have an odd affinity for my sign, and Sagittaron as a result!

      • enigmaticagentscully says:

Oh, I'm a Gemini, and it really bums me out, because every time someone from Geminon shows up, they're a weirdo religious fundamentalist. Not that I have anything against weirdo religious fundamentalists, especially since in the context of this show they seem to be right, but it makes it hard for me to identify with them.
        🙁

      • psycicflower says:

My star sign Scorpio (not that I believe in astrology) is apparently the key clue to figuring out the Tomb of Athena and finding earth so I'm happy.

      • knut_knut says:

haha I'm an Aries and I got really excited when they mentioned The Ram, even though it didn't do anything. Also, in middle school I once had to give a presentation on Apollo whilst dressed like him so I have a soft spot for anything Apollo related (minus that goddamn arrow. I made a bow AND a lyre and they looked more professional than that arrow)

      • hassibah says:

Yeah, I don't care about astrology either but I feel the same way about my planet even though it's barely mentioned so far. I also get weirdly happy when a character or real person I like has a birthday that's close to mine even though it doesn't mean anything.

Okay here's a more coherent comment, haha. I had been anticipatin the Sharon and Tyrol reunion.. semi dreading it and semi looking forward to it. Like I mentioned, Tyrol was one of my favorite characters and I loved his relationship with Boomer. A little part of me was still hoping that Sharon would hold on to that.. but I knew that once her story started with Helo, I had very little hope. But I loved the line "We haven't met… but I remember you." D'aww. 🙂

You can't really look up and see the constellations like that. I loved that they used the old names for the 12 colonies: Leo, Virgo, Capricorn etc.

Head!Six identifying herself as an angel was amazing, I find angels fascinating tbh. She couldn't be a figment of his imagination and she couldn't be a Cylon chip because she seemed to know what was going to happen before it did. So a supernatural (maybe?) explanation works for me.

    So, about 'Earth'.
. I'm assuming it was sort of a mirage to show them, otherwise they could have just got everyone done there and shoved them into the teleport thing y/n?
. About what it actually showed…I know it was dark and seemed to be in a field, but…Earth seemed pretty untouched? If they're seeing stars that clearly they'd have quite far away from cities to avoid light pollution etc.
. Was I the only one who went 'OMG STONEHENGE???" when it first happened? It's obviously not but it would be pretty cool if Earth was looking for the lost colonies too via random clues etc.

  22. Karen says:

I know most of y'all probably are freaking out over the whole finding a roadmap to Earth stuff that happened, but OMG. For me the best moment of the episode was when Lee and Adama hugged. ;_; I WAS SO VERKLEMPT. THEY ARE FAMILY AND THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, OK? I had a lot of emotions! I was so happy and ;dakjf;ljds Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.

AND THEN ADAMA TACKLED SHARON AND NOTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL AND EVERYTHING HURT. Can't we all just get along?

Also my shipper self really loved that Kara was already pushing for Roslin to send a rescue mission back for those left on Caprica (aka Sam). I can't help it! I am a huge sucker for the separated lovers trying to get back to each other trope. I am powerless against it!

    • notemily says:

I like how from what we've seen of Starbuck so far, we know that she WILL find a way to make a rescue mission happen, if she has to steal a ship herself.

  23. doesntsparkle says:

I feel so conflicted about Sharon. She's the most interesting character, in my opinion. I really like her and sympathize with her, but on the other hand she's a Cylon so I can't completely trust. her. Way to be ambivalent show. It made the scene where she had the gun on Adama Sr. really tense, it could have gone either way.

The religious differences between the humans and Cylons are interesting. It seems like the humans worship the Greek Gods, or something similar. I just wonder how the Cylon's monotheistic religion popped up.

  26. hamnoo says:

Am I the only one that hates – hATES HATES HATES Adama's clapping for Laura?
To me, it's the same as his repeated shouting of "So say we all" in the miniseries, only worse. In both cases, it's about him (or about the actor, since he apparently at least improvised the first scene) being a special little someone, but in this episode's clapping, not only is Adama forcing all the attention on him, he is dimming Laura's much deserved spotlight.
The clapping says to me (in a machisto voice): "I, Adama, hereby give you the right to stand in this place, because I, the good, kind-hearted, gracious leader of these people have to show them first that I consent, that I want you up there."
SHUT UP ADAMA – YOU were the one who didn't want her back in the beginning, the fleet wanted her. And she doesn't need you, thank you very much.

    Rant over.

  27. notemily says:

Home part 2: Long comment is long.

YAY MY SUBTITLES ARE WORKING AGAIN JOY OF JOYS.

First of all, I would just like to say that this is my favorite Sharon episode. I love her so goddamn much, and the way she reacts to everyone in this ep–Adama, Tyrol, etc–is amazing. She knows who she is and who she is is AWESOME.

The whole "almost a third of the fleet" thing is a complete retcon, btw. Remember in the miniseries when they had to leave like 20 ships behind because they didn't have FTL drives and there were only 40 or so that did? Yeah. Now they apparently have over 70 ships in the fleet.

I like the parallel between Adama's "She [Roslin] believes in them [the visions], and so do the people that are with her" from this episode, and Roslin's "She [Sharon] thinks she's in love, even if it's software instead of an emotion, it's real to her" from last episode.

I know it's an ableist word and I can't hear it anymore without thinking about that, but the moment when Gaius looks at Cottle with huge eyes and a panicked look and goes "I'm not crazy!" always cracks me up. James Callis is amazing.

Everyone aboard Galactica just "let it happen"? Dude, she came out of the crowd with a gun and shot Boomer. There wasn't a lot of time to stop her. I still hate you Meier. (Although later when Sharon talks to Helo about it, I like that they mention that Cally only got 30 days.)

YAAAY EVERYONE IS HAPPY AND REUNITED AND NOTHING HURTS. Except that it's only halfway through the episode. Uh-oh.

"And you ask why." As for whether this line is a direct answer to his question to Dead Boomer–I don't think so. I think it's more of a general answer, as in "you [humans] ask why we [Cylons] hate you and try to kill you? THIS is why." It was just a super-eerie coincidence that Adama had literally asked the question "why" to Dead Boomer.

As for the question of her memories, I always assumed that they had given her Boomer's memories up until she had left Helo behind on Caprica, so that Caprica Sharon could pick up where they left off. But I don't know HOW they would do that, if Sharon's statement about not being constantly connected to the other Cylons is true.

From the wiki: On Kobol, Zarek tells Meier that it's "harder" to get blood on your hands than to wash it off when referring to killing Apollo. Given the context, it is reasonable to assume that the correct line was that it is "easier" to get blood on your hands than wash it off, that Richard Hatch flubbed the line, and that the flub was not caught during filming.

In other words, Zarek fails so hard that he makes the actor playing him fail.

Okay big question HOW DID THEY GET OUT OF THE TOMB. Seriously, you're just going to skip over that part? Did they click their heels three times? WHAT HAPPENED.

ADAMA STARTS A SLOW CLAP. Hee hee hee. Just like in the miniseries where he made everyone say "SO SAY WE ALL" louder until he was satisfied. Space Daddy is back!

Bit late to the party but… Love this episode! Love Sharon being awesome. Just like in the previous episode when she shoots down the Centurions, I love her defying their expectations. And her and Helo are the cutest ever. (The Tyrol bit was super awkward and put my stomach in knots, especially as they kept cutting to the worried expression on Helo's face)

I thought it was interesting that both Sharon and Helo were surprised that Boomer had been killed (even if it wasn't ordered), I suppose it shows how cut off they really were on Caprica.. or their unique perspectives on Cylon and Human differences. "To him, to the President, to all of them, Cylons aren't people, I'm not a person to them. I'm a thing" my creys

Ahhh, the look on Starbuck's face when Adama walks over to her. With the amount of stuff that has gone down since it's easy to forget how they left things with each other and how she must have thought that he hated her, that she'd betrayed him by stealing the ship and disobeying orders. But he doesn't. happy creys

Six appearing in normal clothes is awesome. And strangely made her more attractive (who knew that was possible?).

Regarding the comments below on Sharon “Athena” Agathon saying “And you ask why” after being choked by Adama, according to the podcast I just listened to, it was Ron Moore: “I think it was me.”

I’m a huge Boomer/Athena/Eight fan (more than any other character on the show) so I’ve thought a bit about how this could work with BSG physics. I think a way to reconcile “And you ask why” is not to look at dead-Boomer communicating with alive-Athena but to think of Adama, who’s brimming over with emotion, choking/hating the heck out of Athena. Cylons control their baseships by some kind of data transfer between their hands and a water-like liquid. And Athena shoved a fiber optic cable into her arm to communicate with the Galactica’s computers.

Maybe there is some kind of bio-electro-chemical communication between Adama and Athena at that moment he’s choking her. He very well might have been thinking, very strongly, about saying “why” to dead-Boomer. I know Adama isn’t a computer puddle on the baseship or a fibre optic data cable, but some kind of communication happened because of Cylons’ ability to transfer information through touch.

So a bit of a stretch maybe but it’s in the realm of science fiction. No matter what, like Ron Moore said: “It’s an interesting, creepy moment” I agree!!!

Eick: Was it Eddie or you that came up with, “And you ask, ‘Why?'” ‘Cause it wasn’t my idea.
RDM: I think it was me.
Eick: Because the creepy thing about that is that I don’t think any of us know what that means.
RDM: Yeah. What does that mean?
Eick: I mean, except that on some stellar plane she-
RDM: It just kinda works. It’s an interesting, creepy moment. How does she know that? It’s legitimate question. How does she know that? I don’t know. Write in.
    Eick: Yeah.
    RDM: Write in.
Eick: Yeah, write in. Exactly. We’ll pick one.
    RDM: (Laughs.)

Also, I’m fairly sure I remember Ron Moore saying on the podcast that the “And you ask why” was improvised. Apparently Grace Park was asked to come up with something frightening.

“And you ask why.” As for whether this line is a direct answer to his question to Dead Boomer–I don’t think so. I think it’s more of a general answer, as in “you [humans] ask why we [Cylons] hate you and try to kill you? THIS is why.” It was just a super-eerie coincidence that Adama had literally asked the question “why” to Dead Boomer.
