In the third episode of the second season of Steven Universe, what the fuck. Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Steven Universe.Â
Well, at least this episode is canonically non-canonical.
So, if Baize had not told me at the end of this episode that Uncle Grandpa was an actual show that really existed, I would have been completely lost watching “Say Uncle.” That seems to be by design; this episode is deliberately surreal, it makes little sense, and there are entire gags that appear to exist just for the sake of it. And that’s about the extent that I want to take any real criticism of this episode because it’s all an April Fools’ joke, isn’t it? A pretty good one, given that they had to plan this out fairly far in advance in order to pull it off, right???
So, let’s just acknowledge that most of this went over my head and instead just appreciate the Princess Mononoke reference, as well as the fact that Amethyst ate Pizza Steven. Actually, the “plot hole” moment was pretty cool, as was the reappearance of the Beedril characters. And maybe this episode isn’t canonical, but MY THEORY THAT STEVEN REQUIRES EMOTIONAL INTENSITY TO OPERATE HIS POWERS WAS CONFIRMED. Well, in a non-canonical episode, but I will take what I can get.
The video for “Say Uncle” can be downloaded here for $0.99.
