Ok, time to make this official! I had wanted to experiment with “watching” a show for this site that unfolds in real time. So much of what I experience for these reviews is about shows or books that I missed out on. I think I’ve given people the appearance that, aside from LOST or The X-Files, I have never seen anything ever. I also like the idea that we could have a weekly meeting place to discuss a show as it is airing.
The idea popped into my head a few months ago, but things were too chaotic in the development of Mark Reads/Watches for me to figure out how to do it and then all the new shows debuted anyway.
I watched the first few episodes when the show debuted in 2008. I liked it. It was very The X-Files in nature. I was ok with that. But I simply lost track of it until Netflix put all of season one up for rental, and over the course of a week early this year, I caught up.
And then I stopped again. I really liked the end of season one and where the show’s mythology was heading, but I simply didn’t have the time (or the means, since I haven’t had cable in years) to follow along. Once I heard the show was moving to the Friday night death slot, I thought, “I better catch up now while it’s still on the air, before it’s gone.”
As of last night, I’ve gotten through to “White Tulip.” So I only have five episodes in season two, and then nine more for season three. Starting January 21, 2011, we will do liveblogs on Friday nights for the show (and yes, they will take into account the different time zones) and then my review of that episode will go up on Saturday morning.
I’d like to start this Friday by re-watching/reviewing past episodes before we start up again. It’ll give us four episodes (one each Friday) to all re-watch and enjoy before episode ten airs. Of course this is an absurd idea, but it would be really awesome if we could keep a steady stream of fans watching this show. I enjoy it a lot (and the episodes “Jacksonville”/”Peter” made me completely fall in love with it) and I don’t want it to be cancelled!
So, which episodes should we watch together? We can use the same voting method as I am using for Doctor Who. Please don’t spoil the remaining episodes I have left. I hope to finish them all by Sunday, so don’t pitch one of them and include a spoiler. (You are welcome to suggest them, though.)
Ok, discuss! Sound good? I hope we can all enjoy Fringe together!
Mark, do you think you'll watch Castle now that you've seen Firefly? It's a really cool show. I hope you'll consider watching it.
Yes, I will watch it. Probably not for Mark Watches, but yes. I will.
Castle is kind of formulaic so I'm not sure reviewing it would really be rewarding for anyone, but it's definitely a fun show to watch, and it's all down to Nathan Fillion.
OH MY GOD this is awesome
For fear of spoliers I'll largely be staying out of this for now but I'd definitely be up for some Fringe. I'm only half way through series 1 at the moment (darn life getting in the way of show marathons) but I should, hopefully, be caught up by January 21, although I'm not sure how live blogging'll work for the different time zones if it's watching as it airs.
FRIIIIIIIINGE
Sorry, what was the point of this post again? ;D
FFFFRRRRRRIIIINNNNGGGEEEEE
We had to switch cable boxes mid season and FORGOT to add this to our DVR list until it was too late.. so we gotta play catch up.
As a side note, my husband really wants our next son to named Walter lol
OH MAN THIS SHOW. Def agree with "August" suggested above, and submit:
"Safe" 1.10
"Bad Dreams" 1.17
"Momentum Deferred" 2.04
AND EVERYTHING AFTER JACKSONVILLE. omg the end of season 2 was just week after week of amazing.
All of this!
Everything that aired after "Jacksonville" up until "Marionette" last week was like, the best episode ever. This show is on a roll and I love it so hard.
Love this show and I am so excited for all of you yet to see it.
For my money, these are the episodes we should watch to help people catch up:
Season 2: Peter, jacksonville, over there parts one and two
Season 3: entrada
It stinks that we have to skip so much but I think if people watch these they should mostly be caught up.
I like the idea of doing essential episodes.
Does someone want to put together a list of must-see mythology episodes?
I'm also a fan of this show so you'll only get support from me for watching it. 😉 My ill health has delayed my own viewing this year and I have to catch up on this season (of this and most of the shows I used to watch) but I see no problem with that.
What I really want to ask are a couple of things. First, what day and time does the show run? And second, what time are you proposing to make those liveblogs? I don't even have a tv, much less cable, so my question is for how many hours will I have to download the episode to watch before the liveblog takes place. For me that's the main problem here. Anyway, there's still a month before that.
If you allow me, I want to suggest to you another show that follows the kind of theme that's part of shows like X Files and Fringe. A show in the line of FlashForward, about seeing future events and trying to prevent them. The difference? It's an UK show, and it only has 5 episodes. They were supposed to make a second season but it never came. The show's name is Paradox. It's just a suggestion for you to watch something very short with a powerful take on a specific subject: consequences of changing future events. This is a show that comes to my mind every time I think about Fringe, and since you have that show in your mind I wanted to share how I see it myself. I hope that's ok.
As for suggestions of episodes, I've seen the ones I like suggested already, so I support that vote. =)

Fringe is easily my most anticipated show on television right now. Watching "Entrada" was the first time since probably the LOST finale that a TV show held my undivided non-Bloons, non-Sporcle'd attention. Just me, staring straight at the screen for 42 solid minutes.
Squeee!!!!
YES OMG. I just commented on another post yesterday about how I wished you would do Mark Watches Fringe!
Season three is so fucking amazing. Every episode is a GREAT episode. For real. I'm more excited about this than I am about Mark Watched Doctor Who, because DW just doesn't have the same YOU ARE NOT PREPARED factor.
Have you seen this video? It's Fringe opening credits done Firefly-style. No spoilers, someone was just inspired to do it after Fringe got moved to the Friday Night Death Slot. If Fringe gets canceled I will be fucking CRUSHED.
omg Fringe AND Firefly. SWOON.
OH MY GOD I AM SO EXCITED YOU HAVE NO IDEA
The only other show you can watch that would result in me dying of too much happiness is Farscape.
I have no idea what episodes we should watch together, but FUCK IT I AM GOING TO LOOK THAT SHIT UP.
Mark, I have read all of your HP posts, your Firefly posts, and am thrilled that you're doing the Doctor Who reviews (I'm a crazy fan of all these things :D), but this has finally prompted me to post something. I AM SO EXCITE. :D! This is my current favorite show and well on its way to being my favorite ever.
As for which episodes we should watch, I have no idea how to narrow that down. "Peter" is one of my all time favorites. Season 2 ends on a fantastic two-parter, so they would seem to go together, and the structure of Season 3 makes it hard to narrow it down. "Olivia", "Plateau", "Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep" "Entrada" and "Marionette" were all excellent, but the show has been on such a hot streak that I hate to leave any out. That has to be one of the best problems to have!
Also, I don't know if you have seen this, but the first episode to appear in the new "death slot" is titled "Firefly". 😀
Mark, I'm so happy you're going to start covering Fringe! I love this show so much and it is so under appreciated. <3
Gosh. You are making my head explode. All of these good shows you are reviewing…
I haven't watched Fringe since I broke up with my boyfriend.(He suggested I watch it.)
Then I got into again.
Then I made the fatal mistake of showing my mother Fringe.
I still live with my momma, yes, but I have work and classes and such, and my mom works part time sometimes.
So she can watch a show x amount of times before I even get home.
She loved Fringe, and watched every single episode on Season 1.
Then spoiled it for me.
I stopped watching, again, only to catch a random episode in like, Season 3 or something.
Totes confused.
(Oh, you should watch Leverage. Sure, another one my mother spoiled, but still quite good.)
Leverage is fun times! I love it. At least it's not that spoilable since the episodes are mostly self-contained, and there isn't as much OMGWTF…until finale time, though. They pull out some good shit in the finales.
This isn't really about Fringe, although I am super excited that you will be watching that, but here's "8 things you may not have known about Firefly" http://furiousfanboys.com/2010/12/8-things-you-ma…
Mark!!!
Now I've caught up with you..
You also like Fringe!! Can I take this moment now to propose to you? Will you marry me on the astral plane??? Pretty please, with Hagrid on top?? LOL!
I don't know if I can make it with the liveblogging (i've never attended any of your live blogs, 'coz of time difference), but I definitely LOOOOOOOOOOVEEE the idea of reading your reviews for the past and current episodes..
*IZ almost DEAD from EXCITEMENT!!*
Hmm I can understand wanting to watch something along with the rest of us but the main appeal of Mark Reads/Watches is that unique newcomers perspective. Don't lose sight of that. You don't want to end up being just another blog. It's the newcomers perspective that makes your blogs stand out.
Now I'm not saying you shouldn't do this only that the newcomers perspective should always remain the main focus of Mark reads/watches. Ideally you could go into ongoing shows like Doctor Who review them for a newcomers perspective and them watch them alongside us once you catch up.
Of course you might want to review stuff you already love to begin with but maybe it's better if you do that in a separe blog called. Mark Loves…
OK enough musings. Have fun watching, reading and reviewing awesome series.
Any episode where Olivia is particularly awesome (OH WAIT THAT'S ALL OF THEM), like Bound or … have you seen s3 yet? I don't want to spoil. But I SO AGREE with August, or "Peter" (because "Peter" is great, but also I love the Observers to death and any episode where they feature is good in my book) and you should DEFINITELY do a liveblog of the s2 finale because it is two hours of absolute perfection.
OMG YAY!!! I LOVE this show with the power of a thousand suns! SO EXCITED YOU'RE REVIEWING IT! Okay, capslock over. Btw, are you still planning on watching/reviewing 'A Very Potter Musical'?
GUYS I FINISHED SEASON TWO LAST NIGHT.
This show is out of this world good. I cannot believe what it\’s turned into. A++++ FOREVER.

Fringe: Season 1: Disc 1
Arriving on or around: Thursday, Dec 23, 2010
EXCITE!
Doesn’t this mostly just defy the point of what Mark Watches is…?
Just wondering. Because all the time beforehand, it’s been what you haven’t seen before, and we get to watch your eyes pop out from your head (it’s very amusing). And GRRR – why is Fringe not on in Australia any more?!
That being said, are you ever going to watch any anime? I know it mightn’t be your style but some of it is JUST PLAIN BRILLIANT (so much so that it requires capslock)!
Why does it matter if it's different? All of us watching it in real time will get to experience the mind-blowiness as it goes on. That's not that much different.
Still, as I said before, it's an experiment. It's not what the site is going to become or be as a main focus. It's just something new I want to try.
This is so fun that you got me out of lurking 😛
We should do the entire season 3 as a liveblog. The last season is the best so far (in my opinion). And the double season finale in season 2 is a must 🙂
We will do each episode as a liveblog! I'm excited!
FUCK YES FRINGE
SO EXCITE FOR THIS! 😀
Fringe is so good, oh my God. And, I mean, the first seasons are good but THE THIRD. THE GODDAMN THIRD. SO. GOOD. It just creates its own category of awesome, honestly.
So, I made it through the first three discs of Season 1 of Fringe through Netflix in the past two weeks, and realized 2 things:
1) How silly it is that I've never watched this amazing show before.
2) How unacceptable the speed of my progress through this series has been. Netflix is both awesome and evil when it comes to watching TV DVDs, cause it always leaving you wanting MOAR NOW!
So with that, I'm happy to report the Blurays for Seasons 1 and 2 will be at my door tomorrow, thanks to Amazon and some left over Christmas money!
THIS SHOW IS MY LIFE. Haha dramatic, but I am seriously in love with it. It makes me so happy when I find other people that enjoy because so few people do. Which I don't understand because it's awesome. I would say Over There parts 1 and 2 and Peter because those set things up really well. Ah! I am excited.
Also, I think that the lead singer of the band My Favorite Highway looks exactly like Joshua Jackson. His name is David Cook and it's only with short hair but I freaked when I saw him in concert. And my uncle used to work on Dawson's Creek with him. Fun facts of the day 😀
I loved the "White Tulip" episode!! It was one of my favorites.
