Mark Watches ‘Battlestar Galactica’: S02E04 – Resistance

In the fourth episode of the second season of Battlestar Galactica, OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK I CAN’T DEAL OH MY GOD. Intriged? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Battlestar Galactica. Oh, and flip the fuck out.

JESUS CHRIST HOW.

HOW

HOW

HOW

AM I SUPPOSED TO DEAL WITH THIS.

This is the kind of shit you get dealt at a mid-season break, or maybe during the finale, BUT THIS IS EPISODE FOUR. FOUR. WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON.

I mean, seriously, after returning to Galactica, Tigh interrogates Tyrol and TELLS HIM HE IS A CYLON. Oh god, the worst part about this is that IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE. oh god Tigh has lost it and he is the worst leader ever and I’ve stopped being irritated by him because he just depresses me. HE CLEARLY DOES NOT NEED TO BE COMMANDING ANY SHIPS IN ANY FUTURE IN ANY WORLD. And then he PUTS HER IN THE SAME GODDAMN BRIG AS BOOMER. OH MY GOD IN WHAT UNIVERSE IS THAT AT ALL A GOOD IDEA. First of all, why put anyone in the same cell as a known Cylon WHO TRIED TO ASSASSINATE THE COMMANDER. Secondly, WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH BY PUTTING TYROL IN THERE. Will he get a confession of sorts out of Boomer? Oh, you fool, HOW WOULD THAT EVER WORK. And oh god, Boomer is still confused about her identity and IT IS SO DIFFICULT TO WATCH and oh god this is only going to get worse, isn’t it?

BUT WHAT THE FUCK THERE ARE OTHER HUMAN SURVIVORS ON CAPRICA. OR WAIT. What if they are Cylons? WHAT IF THEY ARE CYLONS?

THIS IS SUCH AN AWKWARD REALITY. Any human being could be a Cylon and it is not at all illogical to think so. Oh god COULD ONE OF THESE CHARACTERS NOT DIE. I mean, I don’t think the show would kill off Starbuck ever, but Helo? I COULD TOTALLY SEE HIM DYING BEFORE THE END OF THE SHOW. I wish I had not typed that, it will be prophetic I HAVE THE POWER.

BUT SERIOUSLY. Christ. THIS EPISODE. THIS EPISODE. Tigh is all, “I’M GONNA BE THE MOST RAGING ASSHOLE POSSIBLE. LET ME INSULT BALTAR, THEN MY CREW, THEN SUGGEST MORE AWFUL AND FOOLISH THINGS TO DO and then go back to my quarters for a drink and some bizarre verbal abuse and awkward sex with my wife WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. I mean, RIGHT. Every single issue that Tigh is faced with, he makes a catastrophically worse decision with the last one. Oh, so ships are refusing to resupply Galactica because they don’t want martial law? LET’S THREATEN THEM WITH VIOLENCE. Oh, that made the situation even worse and more ships are refusing to cooperate? Let’s listen to Ellen’s stunning logic and ORDER MARINES ABOARD TO TAKE IT BY FORCE. Oh, so that is a disaster and four civilians are murdered in the process? YELL AT THE LIEUTENANT AND BLAME HIM INSTEAD OF TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ORDERING SUCH A NIGHTMARE.

No, seriously, Tigh, STOP IT. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. I AM SO FURIOUS I JUST WROTE A QUESTION AND DIDN’T EVEN PUT APPROPRIATE PUNCTUATION AT THE END. CLEARLY I AM QUITE SERIOUS ABOUT MY ANGER.

As if I didn’t already have enough to deal with, LEE BEGINS TO PLOT A WAY FOR ROSLIN TO ESCAPE. I use all-caps because AS UNFORTUNATE AS IT IS THAT THE FLEET MIGHT SPLIT APART POLITICALLY, it’s actually a good idea? Or, at the very least, a moral one. And I’m glad Dualla is a part of it all as well; it’s a sign that people who take military duty very seriously are starting to realize that perhaps a resistance to that culture is sometimes necessary.

But really, now, let’s just talk about the huge moment of WHAT THE FUCK: Baltar’s “test” on Tyrol. WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!! Who knew he had that in him? But the scene stressed me out for a different reason: Boomer genuinely doesn’t seem connected to the Cylon network. I don’t know the official name/terminology for it yet, but what I mean is that she seems to believe she is a human and has been one for years. She was programmed to be activated, and she can’t even remember those moments. Obviously, Baltar isn’t intimately aware of this, so that’s what presents the problem. He doesn’t know that his efforts might be futile. So as he injects Tyrol with a toxin and begins to scream demands of Boomer, wanting to know how many Cylons are still left on the Galactica, I expected disaster. She wasn’t going to tell him anything because she couldn’t. And either Tyrol would die or Baltar would lash out at Boomer.

Nope. Eight.

EIGHT WHAT? Eight individuals? Eight models???? We know what four of the models look like, so does that mean there are eight more THAT WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN? OH GOD HAVE I ALREADY SEEN MODELS OF CYLONS AND I JUST DON’T KNOW IT???? a;sdfj;aklsdfj a;kldfja; sdkfljsad;kf a;lksdjf;askldfj;fjkssdkljf

WHAT IS THIS EPISODE DOING TO ME

Oh god, how awesome is Roslin’s little speech to that soldier who stops her? She just sweeps aside her gun, basically saying STAND ASIDE CHILD, THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT. Oh my god I love her so much.

But even this seems threatened when Tigh is sent into a rage upon learning that Lee and Roslin have escaped the Galactica. IS HE GOING TO FIRE UPON THE SHIP AND KILL THEM BOTH? WILL HE CONTINUE HIS REIGN OF BAD CHOICES? HOW MUCH MORE CAN I DISLIKE A CHARACTER? Fortunately, he lets them get away, but you can see just how defeated he is after all of this. And when he turns his anger to the crew, I worried that he would figure out that Dualla was involved, especially with the way he looked at her. Calling back to an earlier scene where Lt. Gaeta confronted Dualla, Tigh asks if there were any calls made off the record. OH GOD IS HE GOING TO RAT OUT DUALLA OH GOD PLEASE DON’T.

When Lt. Gaeta isn’t on your side and is willing to lie to protect others, you might be doing things wrong, Tigh. But he knows it, and in his private quarters, he admits as much to Ellen, who is furious that her husband didn’t do what he could to establish himself as the Commander in Adama’s absence. GOD, ELLEN, SHUT UP. Seriously, WHAT HAVE YOU EVER DONE TO HELP ASIDE FROM ASSISTING TOM ZAREK MURDER A PRISONER.

AND THEN ADAMA JUST SHOWS UP BEHIND THEM AND HE IS WALKING AND AWAKE AND OH MY GOD HOW I HAVE MISSED YOU, BILL ADAMA!!!!!!1!!1!!111!11 Seriously, I genuinely did not expect to see him awake in this episode at all. I’m glad he’s not just magically better, and we can see how difficult it is for him to be up. In just a few seconds, though, we see how wonderful he treats his friend, despite how badly he’s fucked everything up. He’ll work them out together.

No, seriously, amazing human being.

But the MINDFUCKS don’t stop. When Roslin gets off the Raptor on Cloud 9, Tom Zarek is there to greet her. THAT WAS LEE ADAMA’S IDEA: get the man to help them out and HIDE FROM THE MARINES. Oh my god, seriously, I LOVE THIS SHOW. I LOVE THAT THEY GO SO OFTEN INTO WEIRD, UNCOMFORTABLE PLACES. Because what is more uncomfortable than Roslin being forced to work with the man who has tried to derail her presidency multiple times?

Actually, what’s more uncomfortable than that is the fact that Boomer will be used for scientific testing. While I genuinely understand the fear and terror that come with the Cylons, especially since they destroyed nearly the entire human race, I find myself increasingly disturbed by my own feelings towards the human Cylon models. Yes, Boomer is a Cylon, albeit one who is programmed for remote activation. In her “deactivated” time, she’s a human. Right? Or at least her own unique individual being, if she’s not human. And subjecting her to humiliating and painful tests is really hard to think about, even though I get why the humans need to do it in order to stay alive.

God, it’s just so weird to me. As Boomer is brought down the hall and a procession of crew members calls her names and pelts her with objects, I felt bad for her. But she shot Adama! But! OH GOD I AM CONFLICTED. I don’t know how to feel about this!

AND THEN CALLY SHOOTS HER IN THE STOMACH WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK. And she tells Tyrol that she loves him AND THEN SHE DIES.

THEY KILLED OFF BOOMER. WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE FUCK.

(PS: Does Starbuck have amazing chemistry with everyone? Why, hello there, Anders!)

I have to say Mark, you've made it commendably far into the show without flipping out.

EMBRACE THE CAPSLOCK. ONLY THE CAPSLOCK KEY UNDERSTANDS OUR TRUE FEELINGS.

  6. Kaci says:

I ACTUALLY GASPED OUT LOUD WHEN CALLY SHOT BOOMER.

I love how this show continually does that–stuff happens and I don't expect it at all, and yet the second it happens, a part of my brain goes, "Yep, that makes sense and is totally in-character."

Roslin pushing the gun aside may be my favorite moment of the series so far. The look on her face…man. I need a gif of that. Brilliance.

It is so good to have you back, Adama.

And omg, Starbuck has what I call Barrowman Syndrome. It is named after John Barrowman and is characterized by the ability to have chemistry with anyone and everyone. And everything. Like, we're talking sexual tension with a ficus. Starbuck has Barrowman Syndrome in SPADES.

  7. knut_knut says:

OH MY GOD, MARK THIS REVIEW/RECAP. It made me laugh SO HARD but I’m at work and trying to suppress it and started trying to cover my guffaws with coughs and I may have dribbled a little bit on my notebook because I was trying to hide my smile. I am a true lady.

  8. who_cares86 says:

I have to commend the show for taking 4 episodes to resolve it's cliffhanger and even then the repercussions of the cliffhanger are far from over. Too many shows have a massive cliffhanger and then resolve it within five minutes (or at least the first episode)

  9. monkeybutter says:

WHAT ARE YOU DOING, MARK. DON'T KILL HELO. SO HELP ME IF YOU NOMINATE ANYONE FOR PRESIDENT…

Starbuck really does have amazing chemistry with everyone. She has made Caprica a million times better just by being there. I'm glad to see that there are more survivors, and it gives me hope that there might be more on the other colonies. But I also wonder why the Cylons don't patrol that area. They've already demonstrated that they want to breed with humans, so what if they're letting a few survive just for that purpose, and herding them to that point? I'm kind of creeped out by this idea.

I was also really disturbed by the plans to experiment on Boomer. I know she's a Cylon, that she tried to kill Adama, and that she tried to sabotage the fleet and humanity's chance of survival, but she's still a living creature. It's wrong. I'm really conflicted about this. Argh. It's a moot point now that she's been shot and is probably dead (wow, Cally.) Even if her memories are uploaded into another body, would she still be the same person? She and Sharon seem to have been molded by their experiences, and I would hate for her to lose parts of herself.

Yay, Adama's back. Now to try and make things not terrible. His reappearance made me realize that Tigh could definitely benefit from a head Adama. Oh, and Dee is the best for helping to orchestrate the escape. She (and Gaeta) could see how fucked up things were, and she did everything in her power to set things aright without openly challenging the acting Commander. That's not easy. I'm glad she was there to try to keep the Galactica and the fleet operating in accordance with what Adama would want.

    • enigmaticagentscully says:

Tigh could definitely benefit from a head Adama.

LOL best idea ever! Perhaps we could all benefit from a head Adama occasionally. Actually, when I do something really stupid, I often hear the voice of my best friend telling me what an idiot I was…I think she's just defaulted into the Voice Of Reason in my head.

    • echinodermata says:

Love Dee and Gaeta for deciding to go against military orders here.

They may be somewhat quiet members of the crew, but I would bet were they for whatever reason removed from the ship, everything would go to shit on Galactica very fast.

      • enigmaticagentscully says:

I remember when I first watched the minseries, I somehow never learnt what Gaeta's name was. So I just knew him as 'that guy who does all the work' for quite a long time. I get the impression Gaeta basically keeps the ship running while everyone else screws around making dramatic speeches.

      • monkeybutter says:

I agree, and that's why I like them so much, and that the show gives them and specialists attention. They keep everything operating smoothly, with the exception of a screw-up at a stressful time, and I just like their personalities, haha.

        • echinodermata says:

I think "specialists" might be a flagged word for the spam filter.

          • monkeybutter says:

That's really weird. Thanks for approving it! Maybe I'll just call them mechanics.

          • Nobody better post about shoe specialists engaging in incest.

            • echinodermata says:

I remember posting a comment for a Doctor Who review I was really excited to get to, and it went to moderation and I was all 'oh no!' because I really wanted to comment on the episode in question, but arctic_hare, I believe, approved it really fast and multiple people had the same moderation queue problem for whatever reason.

Only in hindsight do I realize we were all probably talking about River Song's wonderful red high-heeled shoes and that was the problem.

/random thing that I realized a little while ago

Anyway, I think Mark may have removed the "shoe" filter.

              • notemily says:

                wait, why is "shoe" bad?

                • echinodermata says:

…people like advertising shoes? I dunno, the spam filter apparently comes pre-equipped with a list of terms commonly found in spam, in which when used in a comment, the comment needs approval. Most of it is sex/drugs/gambling related, but I suppose shoe spam is common enough in general to make the list? There may be a list of products that are flagged words and none of us have realized what tripped the filter because they aren't used by commenters very frequently.

    • ChronicReader91 says:

"SO HELP ME IF YOU NOMINATE ANYONE FOR PRESIDENT… "

He can nominate Ellen Tigh for President. Or Tom Zarek. Hey, that actually makes sense in the context of the show!

  10. enigmaticagentscully says:

Random hilarious moments of this episode…

    – Starbuck quizzing the C-Bucks on their games to verify their identity
    – Helo remembering that he lost money on one of their games
    – "That word is racist!"
    – Everything Doc Cottle ever says or does.

It struck me while rewatching this episode that Ellen is almost a parallel to Six. Where Six is imaginary and offers up correct information in helpful ways and advice that usually brings benefits to the recipient, Ellen is real, misuses the information she has and full of the WORST ADVICE EVER! "Why do I listen to you?" Very good question Saul, now stop doing that!

Nice to know there's other people alive on Caprica, love the worldbuilding about Pyramid that we get with the addition of the Resistance. Kara and Sam playing near the end is a nice touch, gives us that information about the game and we get to see them interact.

Awww Billy, honey, you'll help get Laura out but won't go any further. I totally understand why he did it but still, sad to see him go.

YAY SPACE DADDY'S AWAKE AND CAN START FIXING SHIT YAAAAY!

I love that while they might have different views they still care for each other and clearly respect each other and their decisions.

      • enigmaticagentscully says:

Roslin/Billy is my favourite platonic relationship on the show. They're so cute!

…I find it really hard to think of her as 'Laura' though. I'm not sure why? It seems kind of disrespectful somehow. Like that weird transition to calling your friends parents by their first names, rather than just 'so-and-so's dad'.

    • notemily says:

The Wiki points out the parallel between Ellen and Six, talking about how they both manipulate their men by talking over their shoulders. The men they're talking to, though, are VERY different.

Mark, I strongly recommend watching the Extended Version of episode 2.10 instead of the Regular Version. The Regular Version is on the DVD set for the first half of Season 2 (Season 2.0), the Extended Version is on the Season 2.5 DVD set.

Where can I find the extended version of that episode that's online? WILL I HAVE TO STEAL IT.

      • Noybusiness says:

Can you download torrents? 'Cause there seem to be a few online, though I can't test if they work on my office computer. It's not in the iTunes Store.

Episodes 3.09, 4.12, 4.18, and the series finale, and the first movie also have Extended Versions. The Extended Version of the first movie (BTW, are you going to watch that in chronological or airing order – and what about the 3 series of online mini-webisodes?) is in the iTunes store.

        • xpanasonicyouthx says:

I've been told airing order is better, as chronological order spoils things.

          • Noybusiness says:

Ah, then the first web series is between the Season 2 finale and the Season 3 premiere, the second web series is between the Season 3 finale and the first movie, the first movie is before the Season 4 premiere, the third web series is between 4.11 and 4.12, and the second movie is after the series finale.

Actually, putting the third web series between 4.11 and 4.12 is chronological, but I feel putting it between 4.10 and 4.11 (as it was released) would be pretty pointless.

      • hamnoo says:

No no NOO don't watch the extended version. Watch the normal version first, trust me. Both have their merits.
The extended version is better in character development, and there are some particular scenes that I always watch that version for.
BUT the aired cut has a pacing (especially in a certain scene) that draws you in so much more. I'm on the edge of my seat every time I watch the short version, and the longer version just feels a bit wrong in that aspect.
But after, do watch the extended version.
        (I hope I didn't write too much.)

    Nope. Eight."

The thing is, there's actually no reason to assume that Boomer's telling the truth. She loves Tyrol, and as such she's in extreme pressure to come up with an answer. I think that in a similar situation, lots of people who don't have any real information would just make up a number on the spot because they feel like they have no choice.

I think it's entirely possible that Boomer has no knowledge of how many Cylons are on board. If nothing else, I don't think there's really a reason that the Cylons would allow one of their secret agents to have knowledge of how many other secret agents there are in a given location.

    • echinodermata says:

Yeah, she gave an answer under duress so even if she does know, they still won't know that and really shouldn't trust her answer here.

    • monkeybutter says:

      Oo, good thought.

    • enigmaticagentscully says:

When I first saw this, I just assumed she was lying to save Tyrol. It didn't occur to me for a second that she actually knew something, it seemed like she just made it right up on the spot to me.

    • klmnumbers says:

I always thought that – that she just threw a number out there to save Tyrol.

    • notemily says:

It's basically the same reason that torture gets you bad intel. People will say anything just to make you stop what you're doing.

  14. xpanasonicyouthx says:

do y'all realize how obsessed i am with this show right now

    oh my god

    • shoroko says:

I haven't been saying a lot (I mentioned it earlier, but it's a lot because I want to be extra careful about any remote even expectation spoilers when it comes to this show – and I also just like reading others' comments, especially those who are watching it for the first time), but Battlestar was one of my favorite shows when it was on, so it really has been great to see you enjoying it so much.

    • Now it is time to play the BSG game! I think you're past anything the game itself would spoil/reference!

      • enigmaticagentscully says:

Hey if you play the BSG game with Mark, can we get a review/play-by-play of that? Because, I'm not gonna lie, that would be stupendous.

Best game ever that lets you completely betray your family and friends and lead them to an untimely doom.

        • With plenty of mocking laughter and taunts. Don't forget that part.

          • xpanasonicyouthx says:

            WHAT IS THIS GAME.

            • It's a semi-cooperative game where you are trying to get to Kobol through a series of jumps, all the while trying to keep your morale, food, and population up and fending off Cylon attacks.

Also, one or two of you are Cylons secretly working against Team Human. And you may start out on Team Human but turn Cylon halfway through the game because you're a sleeper agent.

It's just as depressing, stressful, and hilarious as the show itself!

    • enigmaticagentscully says:

Just ride through it man, it's totally natural.

    • John Small Berries says:

I started rewatching the episodes along with you, to remind me of what went on in each one before I read your review. After watching four or five episodes, I just gave up limiting myself to one per day and mainlined all the rest of them in about a week and a half.

So, yeah, I have a little bit of an idea about how obsessed you might be.

      • Kim says:

Yeah, I'm fighting this impulse, too. I made myself stop at 2×10, but I'm not sure how long I can resist the impulse to mainline the rest of the series. I can imagine myself actually watching the whole thing several times while Mark Watches.

    • klmnumbers says:

EMBRACE IT. Also, watch more than one episode a day, imo. I NEED YOU TO GET TO THINGS SO I CAN FANGIRL WITHOUT SPOILING.

    • Crackers says:

Oh, Mark. You are, SO, SO LUCKY you're getting to watch it for the first time. Just so unbelievably lucky.

  15. doesntsparkle says:

Things I learned from watching this episode with my mother:

    1. Tom Zarek was on All My Children years ago, and in her opinion he should have just stuck with the soap.
    2. Roslin was in Dances with Wolves.

I'm trying to wrap my head around Calley shooting Boomer at the end of the episode. I think she trying to overcompensated for clamming up in last episode. One unarmed humanoid Cylon is much less intimidating than at least five armed ones. The scene kind of reminded me of Lee Harvey Oswald's assassination.

    • echinodermata says:

Ooh, yeah I have thoughts on why Cally shot her.

      1. She knew Boomer. She helped cover for Boomer's and Tyrol's relationship before. Boomer was a friend, or at least someone she respected and was willing to lie for. There's lots of betrayal.

      2. She just got back from a hellish time on Kobol and having a commanding officer come close to killing her. She's coming off of trauma, basically.

      3. She got rescued, which I'm sure was a huge relief, only to find out Boomer shot Adama.

      4. She wants to protect Tyrol, and Baltar wasn't helping.

I figure those all combined, it makes a lot of sense to me.

      • elusivebreath says:

Maybe CALLY is also a Cylon and doesn't want Boomer giving up Cylon secrets?? Or maybe I'm really cynical lol

        • echinodermata says:

Without confirming or denying it, I do remember that fan theory going around at the time with the same reasoning you give.

      • doesntsparkle says:

Good points. During the first season, I thought that Cally might have a little bit of a thing for Tyrol. That could just be me, but she definitely likes and respects him.

    • elusivebreath says:

OMFG THAT'S WHERE I KNOW HER FROM! And the shocks keep coming lol!

    • The scene kind of reminded me of Lee Harvey Oswald's assassination.

Deliberately so. RDM keeps calling it "the Jack Ruby scene" and the like in the podcast commentary.

    • John Small Berries says:

Mary McDonnell also played the mother in Donnie Darko. Not that it was much of a part, but still.

  16. pill says:

im usualy a level headed person. but when tighs like "i should talk to the fleet captins" and then ellans like "no, you should RAPE THEM ALL WITH VIPERS AND DAMAN THEY SAY YOUR NAME WHILST YOUR ORGSAM! its what bill would have done" i have never wanted to kill anyone as much as i did ellen. i shouted at the tv. it was that bad.

  17. Karen says:

Anders could get it. I HAVE NO SHAME. I realize this was not the main point of the episode, but still. Those arms… and that height…

But also, yay! Adama is awake! Now he can fix ALL THE THINGS.

  18. janype says:

"But the scene stressed me out for a different reason: Boomer genuinely doesn’t seem connected to the Cylon network. I don’t know the official name/terminology for it yet" …Skynet?

  19. lastyearswishes says:

    Anders. <333333

    Boomer. :(((((

I hate to say it, but it's probably better for her that she WAS shot, at least now she doesn't have to become a lab rat.

  20. NopeJustMe says:

Baltar was actually pretty scary in the scene when he was interrogating Boomer. I mean, almost killing Tyrol? Wtf? It was borderline out-of-character, but maybe, judging from 'Fragged' Baltar is going to be more serious? I have no idea sadaegeaesfh

Is it really bad that I feel no sympathy for the Cylons? I mean, none at all. Some other people who've already watched it keep talking about how human and misunderstood they all are. I don't, makes me wonder if there's something wrong with me. They committed genocide on 12 planets killing billions of people: previous slavery doesn't justify mass-murder. Boomer shot Adama, blew up parts of the ship and overall was a danger. Okay I don't think she should have been killed, but it was better than experimenting on her, no?

(Also, hopefully this will get my next question answered. When (if?) she wakes up in her new body, will she still have 'Boomer's' memory and personality, or will she just have that of her Cylon counterpart…do they all have the same blank-slate basic personality to start off with, or does each Cylon have its own personality, despite it being a 'copy'. Because Boomer and Sharon act pretty differently (Sharon seems less panicky, for obvious reasons) but that would mean, if they lose a personality with each death, that each death WAS real, because just because someone's walking around with your face and memories doesn't make them YOU.) omg that went on far too long.

Why did Cally shoot Boomer? They were talking about Tyrol earlier, was it that loyalty thing again (God chief your crew loves you so much ;_; please don't be a Cylon/die/I have no idea)

    • hassibah says:

In all honesty, if I was Helo I think my first instinct would have been to kill Sharon as soon as I knew what she was regardless. Not cause the cylons are or aren't like humans but out of self-preservation.

    • Pseudonymph says:

I feel sorry for Boomer, though not Cylon-kind, because she didn't intend do any of those things, as far as I can tell. She was being used.

    • notemily says:

I don't even know what Baltar hoped to accomplish by almost killing Tyrol. It seems from his conversation with Six that he was just like "time for people to take me seriously! I WILL PROCEED TO ALMOST KILL A DUDE."

  21. klmnumbers says:

Does Starbuck have amazing chemistry with everyone? Why, hello there, Anders!

Hahaha, I know, right? Katee could have ~sexual chemistry with a brick wall, imo. But in happier news, Anders is a lot sexier than a brick wall.

  22. Ryan Lohner says:

My immediate thoughts after seeing this one for the first time: was there any Cylon presence nearby for Boomer to download into another body? And if so, would she retain her sleeper personality or just be a pure Cylon now, with all her juicy information on the fleet at the Cylons' fingertips?

You also have to wonder where the Caprica Sharon is by now.

  23. hpfish13 says:

So….this is something I'm having trouble unseeing, but does anyone else think that Tom Zarek kind of looks like an older Jonathan Taylor Thomas?

  24. @msshelly02 says:

    Mark Mark Mark…
You are totally supposed to feel that way toward the Cylons. You are supposed to ask the question, is this ok? Really? Is it ok for the "good guys" to torture their enemies? (Incidently, I will never be able to speak the phrase "the good guys" without thinking of Ben Linus) Is it ok to treat the Cylons like this, even after all that they have done, if they look and feel human? I can't say too much right now without spoiling you, but I will say this is the perfect post 9/11 show. It was definately made for a specific time and specific place and I think it is bloody brilliant.

  25. fantasylover120 says:

BOOMER! Damn it, my prediction in that corner was right. Hopefully the other Boomer will be okay? Also, booyah, Adama is back! Hopefully he'll knock some sense into Tigh or throw him in the brig (they have a brig, I'm assuming?).

  26. hassibah says:

I didn't really love the end with Cally-I think this files under unpopular opinions. It's like they thought oh Gaius killing someone worked really well so let's have aNOTHer person we'd never expect kill this ep. Blah, I don't know, I really didn't care for it or the build up either and I really don't like where I think this is going.

Also, I really don't like what they're doing with Ellen Tigh (well, what they've been doing with her since she first showed up.) Saul Tigh is a hardass and he has this me against the world attitude that will forever come up and bite him in the ass, the woman manipulating a man with sex trope does not need to be there, it shouldn't be there, period.

What did I like? EVERYTHING ELSE.
    Holy shit Gaius WTF?

Katee Sackhoff related – I was going through my gif folder for something else, and I found this, and I had to share.

Several months back, never mind how long exactly, Katee and Tricia went on a motorcycle ride to raise money for gulf relief. They filmed a documentary (which we'll hopefully all get to see sooner rather than later). The best part, though, was that every night they did live chats. While drinking. And after the first couples nights they introduced a bit where Katee's mom, Mother Mary, would pick a favorite comment from the live feed at the end, and that winner would get a T-shirt.

Well, one night I won. Tricia has a ton of cats so I mentioned how my cat was currently digging around in my cleavage and I had no idea what she expected to find. This was their reaction.

    <img src="http://i55.tinypic.com/2ninzol.jpg">

I MADE KATEE AND TRICIA LOL

    [/storytime]

** OK, to be fair, it was more the combination of my comment, feedback looping problems with their phone connection, everybody's inability to say my username out loud, and the alcohol. Definitely the alcohol. But still!

    • knut_knut says:

this is so adorable!!! Are they bffs in real life? Please let them be

    • feminerdist says:

YES. I followed those two on twitter, and still do, because of their gulf relief. I didn't get to do any live chats, or try to stalk them as they came thru Louisiana (seriously though, my friend and I were all about trying to meet Starbuck and Six, FOR REALS, but work got in the way *shakes fist*). But anyway, I love this gif, and I my love for Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer multiplied by 100 when they did their ride for gulf relief.

      • karate0kat says:

Is it Louisiana where they have drive through daiquiris that the girls had to pick up immediately? Because that was awesome. But maybe it was Texas? I can't remember anything. Anyway, yeah, they came on one night and were drinking their drive through daiquiris. Hilarity ensued.

        • feminerdist says:

LOL Yup. That's us. I know it sounds completely nuts that such a thing exists.

I don't know about Texas, but here in Louisiana, definitely. When I'm with people from other states, and we pass a drive-thru daiquiri shop, they're always like "Wait, what did that sign just say?!!"

THERE ARE MORE CYLON HUMAN MODELS.

YOU ARE NOW WHERE I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO BE. YOU ARE AT THE POINT THAT I DECLARED TO MY STUFFED ANIMALS THAT WERE IN MY ROOM THAT THIS SHOW IS FUCKING AMAZING AND THAT I WILL LOVE IT FOREVER.

  30. Becka says:

Hey Mark! I've been reading along with these for awhile, and I'm so glad you're enjoying Battlestar Galactica. Seeing your reactions is bringing back a lot of memories from the first time I watched the series. It was powerful and OMG SO STRESSFUL.

So, Resistance. I like this episode because of the character development, and also Anders is hot. Look, I am shallow.

Also, this episode began my furious loathing of Cally. I remember a couple of episodes back, someone commented that watching BSG was like watching a bunch of miniature series in one (sorry, I can't remember who said it but it was funny!) Anyway, I myself am watching "The Adventures of Starbuck," "Helo Loves Sharon," and "Shut Up, Cally! The Series." I hate Cally so much. I understand the impulse behind her shooting Boomer, I could even forgive her for that. But did you see the look on her face? She was so PLEASED with herself. "Yeah, I did that, Chief. I shot your ex right in front of you. I AM SO AWESOME." BTW, Nicki Clyne (who plays Cally) is incredibly talented, I think, to engender such feelings of loathing in me for a fictional character.

Anyway, I look forward to reading all of your observations in the weeks to come, Mark.

    • notemily says:

I'll join you in watching "Shut Up, Cally! The Series." Coincidentally, I'm also watching the other two that you're watching! I am also watching (rot-13) Gur Gentrql bs Sryvk Tnrgn, but that one doesn't really start for a bit yet.

  31. feminerdist says:

Damn, I love this review. So much.

And see, I was just as shocked by some of this, because I seem to have forgotten most of what happened during season two, for some reason. Well, not just season two, I just forget a lot of what happened. I remember the big sweeping moments of OMG, but I forgot so many of these little OMG moments.

This show can be so stressful! Even if you've seen it already!

  32. akacj18 says:

sadly, i've never been a fan of Anders, nor his portrayer michael trucco. he just looks funny. and acts weird. i know, i'm a freak, but it is what it is.

  33. akacj18 says:

BOOM! cally shoots boomer! another reason to love cally, even if it is a grisly and immoral act. does anybody really blame her for going crazy and killing boomer? i can imagine feeling the same way.

  34. notemily says:

For some reason I had completely forgotten about this episode! I must apologize for the rot-13'd spoilers sprinkled throughout this post. I just have a lot of feelings, etc.

TIGH, STOP DRUNKENLY CALLING PEOPLE CYLONS.

OHAI ANDERS. ("Hello there" indeed!) Damn Michael Trucco is pretty. Although seeing him as a serial rapist on an episode of Law & Order SVU was jarring.

I love the way Roslin says "friend" to Zarek. Just dripping with disgust.

HOSHIT ADAMA IS BACK. HE IS GONNA BE PISSED.

I like the way Cally shooting Boomer mirrors Boomer shooting Adama. And that Chief realizes he still cares about her, machine or not, when she's dying. 🙁 🙁

Ah, I remember this point in the series. When Ellen Tigh was pretty much my LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER IN ANY NARRATIVE MEDIA, EVER. Seriously, I have never wanted a character to just cease to exist and to have retroactively never have existed so badly.
