Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’ Liveblog: The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe

So, yes, it will be a long time before we get a new episode of Doctor Who, which means that I will be freaking out all day tomorrow to see more of Matt Smith. Let us all celebrate some more of Eleven tomorrow ON CHRISTMAS. I GET TO SEE THIS ON CHRISTMAS. DO YOU KNOW HOW AMAZING THIS IS TO ME? oh my god HOLD ME ON THE ASTRAL PLANE.

Y’ALL, I NEED AN ADULT!!!!

NO SERIOUSLY EVERYONE. THIS WILL BE MY FIRST CHANCE TO WATCH A DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL ON FUCKING CHRISTMAS. This could be the worst episode of television in all of history and it will still be the very best thing I have ever seen. Oh, is that a reference to The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe? Oh, there is no way this isn’t perfect.

Anyway, I’m putting this up now because it airs at different times for all of us. Use this post whenever this episode airs for you and liveblog it to hell and back. DO IT. If you’re worried about spoilers, I generally stick to the first page and enter my commentary there, and then go back later to comment on what other people have said.

I’m still taking Monday off to do holiday stuff, to prepare for my first Mark Does Stuff meet-up on Boxing Day, and to finally sit down and finish writing Mark Reads Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. My review for this episode will NOT take the place of a review of Buffy; instead, you’ll just get two reviews in one day sometime next week. DEAL???

oh god y’all, I am so excited I can’t wait to see more of Matt Smith’s beautiful face.

Eek! So excited! Even though I don't get BBC America, so I will just have to hope some kind and generous and enterprising soul gets it online before December 26, so it can properly feel like a Christmas-day Christmas special. (Now that I've gotten my dad hooked on Doctor Who, I keep dropping not-at-all subtle hints like "geez, if we got BBC America, we could be watching the all-day Doctor Who marathon right now". And then he tells me we can have our own Doctor Who marathon through Netflix instant anytime we want. WHATEVER, DAD.)

Regardless, SO MUCH YAY for more of Eleven, and at least a little bit of the Ponds, and the awesome that is sure to be the Narnia/Doctor Who mashup! \o/ HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! 😀

  2. redletter_ says:

Yep, definitely in need of some Doctor Who liveblogging and maybe possibly some Downton Abbey healing right now.

I finally got around to finishing Dance With Dragons and it has destroyed me. Bad decision to read those last hundred pages on Christmas night when I was just a little drunk still.

So, Moffat, you're on notice, no tearing out my heart, pleeease. Or if you must, make it minimally invasive.

  3. A Frog at Large says:

Ooooh, I think it starts in about an hour for me!

  4. Mark's_Watcher says:

It has started, let the excite begin!

  5. A Frog at Large says:

well, I'm feeeling a bit lonesome here, but I dare say it's a very Star Trekie start

  6. Hotaru_hime says:

    What a sweet beginning.
    Oh no, WW2!

  7. Hotaru_hime says:

You know, children grow quite a lot in three years.

  8. Hotaru_hime says:

Those glasses really enlarge that kid's eyes.

  9. A Frog at Large says:

    Awesome round glasses!

  10. Hotaru_hime says:

    Dancing chairs?!

  11. A Frog at Large says:

    mwahahah, an actual police box!!!

  12. Hotaru_hime says:

    HAMMOCKS!

  13. A Frog at Large says:

I'm behind now because we had to pause to cut some cake and make a cup of tea.

  14. Hotaru_hime says:

Aw Doctor, y u so adorable?

  15. A Frog at Large says:

The Doctor in the role of the mad uncle, Love it love it

  16. A Frog at Large says:

I really hope my Narnia expectations are not squashed, that's a lot of assumptions based on just the title

  17. Hotaru_hime says:

I wouldn't even hesitate. I'd scream, "NARNIA!!!" and dive right on in.

  18. Hotaru_hime says:

But where did the present come if not from the Doctor?

  19. A Frog at Large says:

it's got to be from the Doctor though? Apart from it is really creepy

  20. Hotaru_hime says:

OMG IT IS NARNIA!!! Time moves differently!!

  21. A Frog at Large says:

Honestly who sleeps with big glasses on?

  22. Hotaru_hime says:

"Oh grow up Lily! Fairyland looks completely different!"
    Bless.

  23. NB2000 says:

    Trees talking…oh dear, Mark.

  24. A Frog at Large says:

omg omg I want that present!!!

  25. Hotaru_hime says:

I suppose Narnia wasn't published at this time. I'd never go into the White Witch's palace.

  26. Hotaru_hime says:

Even the safe planets get troublesome for the Doctor.

  27. A Frog at Large says:

Let's all hug across the dimensional planes

  28. Hotaru_hime says:

    Awww, poor lady.

  29. Hotaru_hime says:

    Sorry, sentient plants are terrifying.

  30. Mark's_Watcher says:

    Okay, that was awesome.

  31. Hotaru_hime says:

Nice, the woman soldier has a bit of sense.

  32. Hotaru_hime says:

    Mama Bear people, MAMA BEAR!

  33. A Frog at Large says:

If I saw a door with a big snake on it (or whatever that thing is) I think I would think twice about opening it.

  34. Hotaru_hime says:

    What the devil?

  35. Mark's_Watcher says:

Oh God I just realised, that's BILL BAILEY!

  36. Hotaru_hime says:

Sometimes I wish the Doctor would USE the TARDIS to look at the history of where he plans to take children.

  37. Hotaru_hime says:

    Green and weak to wood…
    Original Green Lantern ring!

  38. Hotaru_hime says:

Like a giant version of the ring.

  39. Hotaru_hime says:

    Yay!! Work that robot!

  40. Hotaru_hime says:

    'kay, that's a bit bizarre.

  41. Hotaru_hime says:

"Hold tight and pretend it's a plan"
Need this as a poster please.

  42. Hotaru_hime says:

He's got such old eyes. It's heartbreaking.

  43. A Frog at Large says:

    these soldiers are so funny

  44. Hotaru_hime says:

OK, so if they get home then what about the forest? Where did they go?

  45. Hotaru_hime says:

What about the other two on the plane?

  46. Hotaru_hime says:

No seriously. What about the others on the plane?
Poor Doctor. Time to go in your box, find some new companions!

    • anobium says:

I just assumed they were still on the plane – one was injured and the other one was looking after him, was the impression I got – and then they got out and went home in the next gap between scenes.

  47. Hotaru_hime says:

    WHERE'S RORY!?!

  48. Hotaru_hime says:

They always set a place for him?
    Happy tears?
    BRB, WILL NEVER STOP CRYING.

  49. A Frog at Large says:

flowing in the time vortex? She's good!

  50. Shinbi says:

There's always a place for the Doctor at christmas. That made me tear up!

  51. tehrevel says:

LOL the Doctor at the end looked like a robot. "What is this strange salty discharge from my eyes, is this what you HU-MANS call crying?"

  52. A Frog at Large says:

Amy's Christmas jumper is really quite good. And I thought it was the last we'd seen of the Ponds, I'm so glad they're still here!

  53. A Frog at Large says:

And the teaser for Great Expectations afterwards! Gillian Anderson can do no wrong as far as our household is concerned.

  54. amyalices says:

PONDS FOR CHRISTMAS. THEY ALWAYS SET A PLACE FOR HIM. WATER PISTOL AS SIGN OF AFFECTION.

I firmly believe that River shows up a few hours in and starts pouring them all shots.

I don't care what anyone else says, I will ALWAYS be happy the Ponds are still around. 😀

(The rest of the episode… hey, it was an episode! I'm just sad they wasted Bill Bailey and Arabella Weir on kind of random appearances. They're both so good!

    And… no A +M pilots shoutout? XD
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwNQf08Kxsw)

    (No spoilers there)

    • @liliaeth says:

I firmly believe that River was already there, sitting at the table, and waiting for the Doctor to arrive. After all, why wouldn't she celebrate Christmas with her parents?

Like Amy said, she's a good girl 🙂

  55. Mark! MARK! And EVERYONE! I found a complete timeline of Doctor Who from 1963 till 2011.

It's HUGE as you can expect it to be so I'm just going to paste the direct link to it
    http://www.cabletv.com/images/cabletv/doctor-who-

    Wow much??

  56. notemily says:

so I thought I was going to be watching this downloaded like everything else, or in like two years when it comes out on DVD. but then I remembered I'm at my parents' house for Christmas and MY PARENTS HAVE BBCAMERICA. They don't even watch Doctor Who! They have no idea what they're missing! If I had BBCA I would watch ALL THE DOCTOR WHO MARATHONS. Anyway, NOW I CAN WATCH IT AND IT STARTS IN TEN MINUTES AND I AM SO EXCITE.

  57. As I watched the opening credits, I was sad because there would be no Amy and Rory in the episode.

BUT THEN THERE WAS HURRAH HURRAH HURRAH.

It was a bit sad to have everyone repeat that no one should be alone on Christmas. Since here I am, alone on Christmas.

    Oh, Doctor. You're so awesome.

  68. I love how this show isn't afraid to just let go and be bizarre.

  69. klutzygal12 says:

Hammocks, Bunk Beds, the Doctor loves alternative sleeping tools. Does that sentence make any sense?

  73. klutzygal12 says:

    Well, The Fades looks awesome.

  74. The Doctor is the BEST interior decorator EVER!

  75. klutzygal12 says:

I feel as if that present should be left alone.

  76. doesntsparkle says:

    Leave the box alone!

  77. Trish says:

No, stay away from the present..

  78. Doctor please never stop being a giant 10-year-old

  79. Trish says:

    Ominous voices whispering! D:

  80. klutzygal12 says:

The mysterious boxy doorway is levitating above the snowy ground, this could go one of two ways.

  81. klutzygal12 says:

It appears as if the tree branch is ovulating christmas ornaments…

  82. Trish says:

    "Fairyland looks completely different!"
    Of course it does.

  83. Trish says:

    Oh no, more ornament eggs.

  84. klutzygal12 says:

Uh-oh. Madge will be quite upset.

  85. doesntsparkle says:

Killer Trees? Insert "The Happening" joke.

  86. klutzygal12 says:

If a White Witch pops out, I'm cracking skulls.

  87. klutzygal12 says:

    THEY BLINK. OH NO.

  88. doesntsparkle says:

    Oh shit, that's creepy.

  89. Trish says:

    It blinked!
    Wooden bearded angels!

  90. Trees whispering, that can't be bad can it?

  91. klutzygal12 says:

These things look wildly out of place. Is that Manny from Black Books, or am I making that up?

  92. Doctor: "What do they teach you in school??"

    Me: Everything and nothing.

    • katsadako says:

That's a line from 'The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe', the old Professor kept saying it to Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. I did squee when I saw the previews for this and the Doctor said that line!

  93. Trish says:

I really hope Cyril won't sit in the throne, DON'T SIT IN THE THRONE

  94. “Please stop crying. I can’t interrogate you while you’re crying."

UGH! THE NERVE! YOU CAN'T JUST TELL A WOMAN TO STOP CRYING!! xDD

  95. klutzygal12 says:

Oh good. It was driving me banana sandwich.

  96. klutzygal12 says:

I wish my trees did that.

  97. Trish says:

AGH, THE KING TREE IS WALKING

  98. klutzygal12 says:

Queen tree needs to go very far away. Perhaps Thailand or Middle Earth.

  99. klutzygal12 says:

I take it back Queen tree, I judged your scary exterior.

  100. klutzygal12 says:

    Nevermind. Still scary.
