Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who: The Movie’ Liveblog

OH HELL YES. It’s back! We haven’t done a liveblog in a while and I’m told that perhaps this is the only way we can all survive the only appearance of the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann. Let us all suffer and rejoice while watching Doctor Who: The Movie.

For some of you, this may be your first chance to participate in an event like this, so stick around if you’re unfamiliar with a liveblog. You will soon learn the true beauty of such a thing!

Our liveblog of Doctor Who: The Movie begins at 11:00am PDT. What time is that where you are? Well, the lovely nanceoir created this nifty time zone guide to determine precisely what time YOU will start the movie in your respective place of watching!

At that exact moment, you may press play from the main DVD menu or on your digital file or WHATEVER. We may all be a second or two out of sync, but that largely doesn’t matter. During the liveblog, treat the comments below as your blank canvas of livebloggy goodness. Yell at the screen. Respond to others. Include appropriate GIFs and screenshots. In general, it’s a chance for all of us to experience this film at the exact same moment!

This is my first introduction to both the Seventh and Eighth Doctors, so I’m rather excited. I will watch past serials dealing with the Doctors I’ve yet to see in the coming weeks, but I thought it would be fun for all of us to do this as a liveblog! My review of the TV movie will go up on Monday at the normal review posting time.

See you tomorrow!

…And he flies off into the sunset!

And by sunset, I mean TIME WAR.

    Oh, nuWho, you so cheerful!

  2. Albion19 says:

As rubbish as it is the movie has a special place in my heart because it was the first Who I'd ever watched. I was about ten and super excited. It made little sense but I remember enjoying it.

Eight was my first Doctor and I hope people check out the Big Finish audio plays that feature him.

  3. doesntsparkle says:

    Thanks everybody. That was fun.

So the final verdict. Personally I rather like it. Everything that's controversial about is has been discussed so much you don't even care about it anymore. Personally I love the TARDIS and McGann really gives a great performance for far too short a time.

What I really like about the film is that it's made in 1996 and just feels very 90's throughout which is great because every era of doctor who is different and this at least gives us a glimpse of what a 90's doctor who could and perhaps should have been, obviously the film doesn't succeed in that but it's not for a lack of trying.

CAN I JUST GENERALLY AGREE WITH THIS

well I'm still going to write a review, but yeah. THIS

      • who_cares86 says:

If anything it makes you appreciate RTD more. I mean in 1996 they were faced with the momentous task of bring the Doctor back in a single tv-movie pilot and they screwed it up. Meanwhile RTD was faced not only with bringing it back but with an almost impossible order to make a whole season before they had even started having a clue as to how to make just one episode work. He succeeded.

        • NyssaOfTraken says:

Ah, but one of the reasons it succeeded was because you basically had 1 person in charge. A single creative ideal. This TV Movie was a case of too many cooks. Too many people pulling in too many different directions. IIRC the scriptwriter said thi finished movie was only about 60% what he wrote.

          • who_cares86 says:

Yeah I think the whole American co-production killed it. Not only did they have to bring it back but they also had to spin it to a new American audience whilst still pleasing the old British audience. They spent too much time thinking about how they could please everyone and too little on actually making something good, sod whether people like it.

          • anobium says:

Yes, just got to that bit in the documentary. After all the executives putting the oar in, the movie ended up 60-70% what he wanted.

He does, though, make a point to mention that he was 100% happy with the way Paul McGann and the Doctor turned out.

Poor Eight doesn't want to have to fight a war.

  6. @amyalices says:

And I am now distracted by Vincent and the Doctor being on TV when I turned off the DVD. πŸ˜€

I'll have a proper review/comment for when Mark's actual review comes up, but I'm sitting in my all-day class today bored out of my skull and I just read through everyone's comments on the live blog and I have to say it was quite entertaining. So much love for Eight! (so much WTF for Roberts!Master).

For all it's faults, I love this movie. Paul McGann did not get enough screen time as the Doctor (THANK THE GOOD LORD ABOVE FOR BIG FINISH!) I soooo want him to come back for a 50th anniversary multi-Doctor special in 2013.

    • Prosodi says:

Oh my god, all of this. Big Finish basically assured Eight as my favorite Doctor. AAAH, ALL OF THE CHARM.

  8. mariseul says:

No kidding. I love the TARDIS thing but I feel so bad for Compassion. That one book where she got mindraped with the random whatsitsname was just so wrong.

  9. Sophi says:

This was actually a meh film, aside from a few real WTFs, until the last ten minutes or so when we had Master x Chang Lee, random acceleration of plot, things going boom and some very questionable lines. When my computer wasn't exploding with trying to keep up with the film, my brain was.

Still, this Master just stole my heart when he appeared in those fantastic robes (seriously where did he get them? did they belong to the Doctor? why did he have them? saving them for a special occasion?) and started to pet Chang Lee and get in his face.

THIS WAS A FUN EVENING. I AM SO DOING THIS AGAIN.

  10. ldwy says:

HAHAHAHA I ended up about an hour behind, I had to keep pausing. Oh well, but to keep myself from getting spoiled for the bizarro-ness, I couldn't really keep the liveblog open.
So I will be checking out these comments tonight πŸ™‚

    • ldwy says:

Caught up on comments. You all are amazing. Thanks for organizing this Mark. I'm excited for your full review.
