Mark Watches ‘Fringe’: S03E14 – 6B

In the fourteenth episode of Fringe, a building in Brooklyn becomes the site of a terrifying reality: our world is beginning to fall apart. Meanwhile, Peter and Olivia do their best to try to mend their relationship. Intrigued? Then it’s time to watch for Mark to watch Fringe.

It’s time for me to be a bit of a broken record, but I really enjoy the opportunity to talk about this sort of thing, especially with the positive feedback I got from some of you who could relate. I’m developed a pretty wonderful affinity for Olivia Dunham, both because she’s such a fierce and fascinating female character, and because there’s a large part of her character that I can relate to. There are not many characters on television who open up about feeling “wrong” inside, to feel that something inside them was either made so irrevocably different from the people around them that many social situations provide a sense of dissonance or even terror.

Building heavily on the character developments of all of the episodes since Olivia’s return in “Entrada,” we watched Olivia take the steps to finally begin to repair the pain and loss she experienced as she realized Fauxlivia stole her life during the switch in universes. I was really happy to finally see both her and Peter experience something we’d not seen in a while: hope.

The X-Files did this a lot, but we get yet another episode that helps to possibly explain a paranormal phenomenon in terms of the show’s mythology. Like “6955 kHz” earlier in this season, which tackled the infamous existence of number stations, “6B” suggested an interesting explanation for ghosts. (I recognized this might have been a singular explanation just for this episode, but I have a feeling that the concept of an emotional quantum entanglement will return in a future episode.)

It was inevitable, really, that the effects of what happened when the Fringe Division traveled between universes began to appear in our world. Once I realized that was what was going on in the building in Brooklyn, an unbearable dread set in to me. Even giving that nothing but a cursory thought, it’s a terrifying reality: how much of our universe is going to crumble? Will there be more and more destruction on our side, like what we’ve seen in the parallel world, and will it force Walter and the Fringe team to make more and more drastic decisions to save people?

I guess I’m jumping ahead of myself at this point. This episode opens with a heartwarming (and then heart-wrenching) scene as Walter attempts to force Peter and Olivia to deal with their stilted relationship. I wonder: Has Nina Sharp shared the information Sam provided her about Peter’s disposition affecting the doomsday device? I feel like we got a sense that she had when she asked him how he was doing in the middle of this episode, but I think she has. It seems to be something to important not to share with Walter. But I also know that Walter just wants his son to be genuinely happy as well.

I cringed a lot during Peter and Olivia’s conversations, not because there was anything wrong with them, but because a lot of really difficult things needed to be said if these two were going to be honest with each other. I have to admit that the relationship aspect of these two does feel rushed in a way, but I suspect it’s because the writers are moving the story forward without stalling because they’re leading to a much grander, terrifying reality at the end of this season. Maybe they know there’s a chance that this show might not make a fourth season and they need to push the story to a certain part just in case. Essentially, though, I didn’t expect Olivia to outright tell Peter that she knows he still has feelings for Fauxlivia. On the inverse of that, I also didn’t anticipate Peter confirming he did, but to add a twist to it: he’s only thinking of her because he imagined the two of them together for so long. There is nothing he’s wanted more than for him and Olivia to be together.

The story in apartment 6B is a great, if not too subtle, parallel to Olivia and Peter. Alice Merchant, played wonderfully by Phyllis Somerville, has been seeing a vision of her dead husband, believing it to be a ghost. We don’t know that she’s the reason for the opening events at the building, which seriously was one of the most terrifying cold opens this show has ever given us. We know that people are leaving that particular building in Brooklyn because of, frankly, the weird shit going on. We get a peak of that when the blender mysteriously comes on during a party, but WHAT THE FUCK HOLY SHIT a bunch of people appear to jump to their deaths below. WHAT.

Turns out this building is the source of a spot where our world is beginning to break apart, soon to become a vortex that could swallow half of Brooklyn whole. I found it fascinating how this situation affected Walter so differently from Peter/Olivia. Walter knows that what’s happening in the alternate universe, what’s become a reality of their life, is beginning to happen here. I loved the call back to the third episode in season one, “The Ghost Network,” with the mysterious amber in the bus that I’d completely forgotten about. When Walter begins to realize exactly what that amber may have been used for and what he may have to do in this case, he tells Nina Sharp that perhaps his alternate in the parallel world is not quite as sinister as he suspected.

“For a long time, I’ve been willing to think the worst of Walternate. That he was an evil man. Willing to use any means necessary to get what he needed. I suppose it made it easy to justify what I did. Now we’re faced with the same decision. And I’m arguing that we do exactly what he did. What sort of person does that make me?”

This is not terrifying because Walter might become “evil” himself. He wouldn’t. It’s terrifying because it gives a new context to Walternate’s actions, a justification we’d never considered before, and because it’s possibly the most ominous sign Walter could get. What awful, terrible decisions is he going to have to make in the future?

For Peter and Olivia, Alice Merchant’s role in the growing vortex in apartment 6B provide that parallel to their lives. Because Alice refuses to let go of her husband, she’s risking to destroy everything. Olivia has no idea that Peter must choose her over Fauxlivia in order to save her world, but it’s still great that she takes the steps towards repairing the chances of a real relationship with Peter. I know I wasn’t the only one whose heart nearly exploded when they kissed in the bar and then was immediately saddened that Olivia wasn’t quite ready to move in this direction. But I think her reaction (which wasn’t based on Peter glimmering, I think) was completely natural. How could she not think of Fauxlivia doing the same thing with Peter?

But as she and Peter moved into 6B to confront Alice and try to get her to let go of her husband, I feared the worst. The device to release the amber inside the building was already set up and Walter had already resigned himself to the terrible fate of damning anyone left. (Honestly, this show has a lot of tragic and depressing scenes, but watching Walter relinquish the device to activate the amber to Broyles, knowing his son and Olivia were still inside, was SOUL CRUSHING.)

Honestly, though, I was so surprised and amazed that it was Peter who stepped up to deliver the knowledge that Alice needed to let go, and I loved that it was partially a message to Olivia: I love you and I am going to fight for you.

“But you’ve already had what most of us only dream of. A lifetime with the person you love. Look around you. Your entire house is filled with mementos—photographs, ticket stubs. Evidence of a life shared with somebody. Proof that what you and Derek had was true and real. And I know that when you have something so real, you’ll do anything to keep from losing it. But please, you have to let him go.”

For Olivia, however, this message meant something entirely different. I was hesitant to accept the idea the writers gave us, that it was Olivia holding things back. I think it was completely fair of her to accuse Peter of not being over Fauxlivia. That is something holding them back as well. But they chose not to take a really unbelievable route with Olivia by instead having her accept that Olivia was merely holding back the attempt at a chance for them to be together.

Thankfully, Alice’s husband tells her that the kids miss her, which are kids they never had in this world, and the emotional quantum entanglement is dissolved. Seriously, though, can you imagine an experience like that? After spending months thinking you’re seeing a ghost, you’re actually looking at a parallel universe? Pretty sure that my brain would have pulled a Scanners at that point.

Even though the disaster is avoided, for Walter, he knows this is just the beginning of something awful. Their world is going to continue to fall apart from here on out. The upcoming episodes are going to be full of a lot of uncomfortable realities, I think, so I appreciate that this episode moves in a direction that gave me some of that hope I spoke about earlier. I can relate to the sensation Olivia describes, of feeling so different inside that you feel wrong, and I’m glad that the writers don’t erase that experience for her, to suggest that what she’d lived up to that point was wrong or a lie. It’s very, very real for her and it made me happy that they didn’t discard that. Instead, the final moments of “6B” show us that Olivia is going to give this a chance. Reluctantly at first, with trepidation, but knowing that, ultimately, Peter’s heart wants her. And she’s going to give that a chance.

THOUGHTS

  • So here’s a fun thought. What if Peter gets Olivia pregnant? Yeah, I already want to punch myself in the face just thinking that but WHAT IF.
  • What’s your guess for when an emotional quantum entanglement comes back? Do you think Fauxlivia and Peter could create one?
  • Please don’t yell at Astrid. :: sad faces forever ::
  • Could Walter make me breakfast? Please?
  • OMG NEXT WEEK’S EPISODE. HOLY SHIT.

I don't think Nina told Walter about Sam Weiss. I think it's something she's going to keep to herself for a while because of the doubt Sam cast when he told her not to be sure. If Nina told Walter, I think Walter would have told Peter and Olivia- not intentionally, but in a state of emotional panic.
This whole episode I was freaking out because I was afraid they were going to amber up the building. I really thought they would do it and if Peter and Olivia hadn't been inside, I have no doubt Broyles would have pulled the pin.
It feels like the Peter/Olivia ship was forced a little bit, but I don't care. I'm cheering because I know Fauxlivia's pregnancy is going to sink it and GODDAMN I want to enjoy it.
The only thing I didn't like about this episode is that there was not enough Astrid.

  3. shelly says:

Mark, the producers talk a lot about duality in the universes so I would not be a bit surprised if Olivia gets pregnant. Peter obv. has super sperm.

    • mkjcaylor says:

Yes, that's what I was thinking! We only know of him and Fauxlivia having sex once, and somehow she's immediately pregnant.

If Olivia gets pregnant (which I almost think she has to –involuntarily– in order to even her case against Fauxlivia for Peter's attention) I'm going to put it down to some sort of crazy OtherForces at work on his sperm. Because, seriously, boy. SERIOUSLY.

  4. cjazzle says:

"Peter obv. has super sperm." HAHAHAHAHA. so obvs it's insane! and intriguing quantum entanglement betwixt peter and fauxlivia – perhaps once he somehow finds out she is pregnant. oh my goodness! things are getting thick real fast!

  5. cjazzle says:

    thats what she said. 😉

  6. ldwy says:

I didn't get a chance to watch for the liveblog, but since watched it. Although all the parallels in this episode were quite obvious I liked the way they were done, the effect was good.
I'm glad Peter and Olivia are giving it a go. In real life, yes, I don't think it would, or should move quite so fast, but this isn't real life and even within their life, they're under constant threat of running out of time, so it works.

I also thought to myself, "what if our Olivia gets pregnant too?"
Part of me is like, no, no way. And then part of me is like well, as it stands I can really only see Peter making one choice when it comes to it…he'd choose his child, and as much as I like that I don't like that. So part of me likes that if both Olivias have babies, then when it comes time for his choice, it will come down to the women. The people he's interacted with. And written out (and even when I muse about it in my head) that kind of sounds really bad…but, well, I was turning over the thought.

    Oh, and NEW LAYOUT!?

And also, Walter, I will have candlelit breakfast with you ANYTIME. Bring on the blueberry pancakes.

    • __Jen__ says:

It's funny, because on a lot of other blogs I've read about Fringe, everyone has been complaining about how long they're dragging out the Peter/Olivia thing. I think that for a TV show they've done a pretty good job at portraying things realistically.

Do we even know if it's possible for people from different universes to have children? That would be a craaaaaazy development. I'm really, really hoping it doesn't come down to that decision, because I agree with you that Peter would choose his child. :\

      • mkjcaylor says:

"Do we even know if it's possible for people from different universes to have children?"

I don't think we do! There've only been a few people to cross back and forth, and well, I don't imagine William had any secret love children on the other side.

        • ldwy says:

Ah yes! I saw someone mentioned this idea in the liveblog comments. We don't know!
I agree th possibility of William Bell having throngs of secret love children is slim.

    • mkjcaylor says:

Yea, I agree as I said in a reply earlier. Peter is a good hearted man. He will choose the side with his child. So I think they both need to be pregnant. Which is sad, but…

I think that both of them being pregnant doesn't have to mean the end of Fauxlivia's baby, and that hopefully will be a fleshed out storyline before the end.

OH and, RE: Layout. I really think You Are Not Prepared should be his slogan for both sites. Have we been using Shit Just Got Real very often? Maybe we should use it more.

  7. __Jen__ says:

Ok, so I want to to be Alice Merchant's neighbor (now that everything is fixed, of course), and fix her dinners and go traveling with her and help her make new photo albums. If she likes to knit, it would be a match made in heaven. What a great character played by a fantastic actress.

I'm really loving how they're combining the emotional/character aspects with the overall plot. I honestly don't mind the idea of the lines between emotion and science blurring. I think it's a natural follow through for all the thematic exploration they've been doing. So far we've focused a lot on how machines can affect one's humanity; now we're exploring how the emotional aspects of being human can affect the physics of our world. It's so great.

The Peter and Olivia plot had me grinning like a crazy person by the end of the episode. I love that they actually deal with the fact that both Peter and Olivia are damaged, and give them the chance to work through it. This episode finally offered some hope for several of the storylines.

according to ew.com (http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/02/19/fringe-ratings-improve/) fringe's ratings were up this week and tied with CBS for "owning the night"! we might be skeptical as to the happy times to come on Fringe, but if this is true then maybe, JUST MAYBE, there will be happy times to come for fringe fanatics everywhere. 4th season?? *crossing my fingers*

p.s. if Chuck has lasted as long as it has on NBC, surely Fringe can snag another season. Although NBC has had a habit recently of hanging onto poorly performing shows… hopefully FOX is just as conveniently oblivious and gives Fringe AT LEAST one more season to sort things out a bit! although who are we kidding, in this world the Fringe writers have created there surely can be no tidy resolution. drama will always occur whether it impacts Olivia, Peter, Walter, Astrid et al or not. It just wouldn't be right if the fabric of the space-time continuum wasn't threatened.

    • Barbara says:

But Chuck is awesome and should keep getting seasons!

Also Fox isn't NBC. They tend to cancel shows that don't have higher ratings.

      • TyBlack says:

Also Chuck is one of the more consistant things NBC has got going right now while FOX has quite a few popular shows.

Though, honestly if FOX is gonna hold out on Bones for 6 years and shuffle the Glee couples weekly they have to at least give us at least one show where the romantic relationship is actually possible anymore.

  9. dcjensen says:

I have a feeling the Schrödinger Hotel on Flatbush will come back, but I'm not sure…

I do hope that the apartment building on the Walternate side is the Guildenstern.

I also liked the fact that at the end of the episode they flipped between the two universes, and the balconies were on a different side of the building in the other universe. It made the point of the people falling in the opening very clear.

  10. agrinningfool says:

I don't watch Fringe.. BUT NEW LAYOUT BANNER! YAY

  11. psycicflower says:

Ghosts that are actually just people from another universe, the more the connection is used and the stronger it grows the more cracks that will appear until the stress shatters the universe. <img src="http://i52.tinypic.com/2dm7bx5.gif" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic"> Well hello there Doctor Who.

Amber raises a great moral dilemma. Kill some people and lose a building in order to potentially save more people and stop more disastrous consequences in the long term. We now also have the added difficulty of knowing that the people trapped in Amber are still alive. I do love the fact that our team figured out the cause of the disturbance and managed to end it without resorting to Amber which meant that the same thing didn't happen in the red universe. Both sides got a happy ending for once and no Amber for anyone.

‘Oh I’m sorry if at this moment when the universe is collapsing I forget the magic word.’ It's sad to see the effect this is having on Walter. At the start of the episode he's his usual happy self making pancakes and trying to get Olivia and Peter to have a romantic breakfast together but as soon as he figures out what's going on he changes. He's angry, short tempered, he was mean to Astrid and just generally pessimistic all round. I'm sure the Obsevers are happy that Walter showed again that he was willing to sacrifice Peter if it needed to be done. Everyone else has a good ending apart from Walter who is left worrying about what's to come. I understand Walter's worries and concerns, I just don't want him to end up like Walternate.

The story of Alice and Derek was a wonderful, bittersweet touch and did make a good parallel to Olivia and Peter. It was always going to have to be Olivia who made the move but her fear and hesitance are perfectly valid. She has trust and relationship issues and Peter can't just expect her to get over what happened. As hard as it is though, I'm happy that they're taking the time to have these difficult conversations. Things don't just magically get better because you ignore them.
Given Fringe's history it's more than likely that this will all come crashing down around us but really I just want to have a moment to enjoy it and be happy and excited for Olivia and Peter so.
    ‘I want what you want.’

That's exactly what I thought of too, we even had Walter smashing some glass like the Doctor in that gif. There must be at least one Doctor Who fan on the Fringe writing staff.

Oh and, echoing the love for the new banner!

LOVE the new banner/header, mark! 😀

  14. Karen says:

Basically I spent a lot of this episode squealing and seal clapping. As I was watching a live stream of the east coast airing. At 2 AM in my timezone.

    LOL.

But there was just so much to love. I love Walter as matchmaker, but I think that my favorite instance of that is in season 2 when they're investigating at the wedding Walter says to Olivia (paraphrasing from memory), "You look lovely today Olivia. Peter, doesn't Agent Dunham look lovely?" which then forced Peter into telling Olivia that she looked love. LOL ILU WALTER.

And yeah, I agree that they're rushing the Peter/Olivia storyline a bit, but they only have like 8 more episodes until the finale and the writers probably need Peter and Olivia in an established relationship at that point in order to amp up the drama. So I'm fine with it. And I think they did do a good job of it, exploring Olivia's fears and insecurities.

I was also super excited to see Fauxlivia and Lincoln. I HEART LINCOLN. He was a lovely unexpected surprise. FAUXLIVIA/LINCOLN OTP.

I do the same, only desperately trying to keep quiet so as not to wake anyone up. You should join in the live blog. It's lots of fun to see the simultaneous flailing and theorising as it airs.

Now that Fauxlivia doesn't have Frank anymore I agree, Fauxlivia/Lincoln would be great together. He was so worried for her with the bugs and there is banter, which I always love, and basically yes, OTP.

  15. monkeybutter says:

I think we all wanted to punch ourselves in the face after thinking that Olivia might get pregnant, too. It would make sense, but it would be really frustrating to watch. And if Peter (I keep typing Peter as Peeta, so thanks Hunger Games for screwing up my head) has to choose between two kids, couldn't that open up the possibility of even more weaknesses between their universes? A kid pining for or resenting his or her dad seems like it could cause emotional quantum entanglement. Messy. I look forward to seeing how they resolve all of this.

I appreciate that Olivia isn't super self-assured (or even smug) like Fauxlivia, but damn was I glad that she seemed to be getting some of her confidence back at the end of the episode. Her and Peter's issues aren't solely her fault, and she's been through a lot to justify feeling wrong or inadequate, but I really want to see Olivia feel more comfortable in her own skin. Hope, indeed!

What awful, terrible decisions is he going to have to make in the future?

From what the Observers hinted at, I'd say losing Peter. I was worried for a bit about him getting Ambered, but it's like the car that almost ran him over in "The Firefly": the writers are going to dangle possible important decisions for Walter and near-death for Peter for a while.

I'm looking forward to next week! And I like the new banner!

  16. toneDef77 says:

Ok, so I was out of town and just got a chance to watch this episode, and then I rushed over here to read Mark's take on the biggest "shit got real" moment of the episode, and it's not even mentioned. And not a single person mentioned it in any of their comments. So really, did every single one of you miss the huge reveal at the end of this episode? Were you paying attention?

I hate to post about it now if no one caught it. Please, go back and watch the entire scene where the vortex is about to open up, and then go watch everything that happens in the alternate universe.

Now I'll reply to this post with my OMG post, please wait until you've seen it. I don't consider it a spoiler, but it appears no one caught it, and you really need to re-watch the episode if that's the case!

  17. jennreyn says:

Here's a totally random thought, based on Walter's recent reminiscing about Bell: Is there a fringe (HAHA PUNS LOL) of the fanbase who ship Walter and Bell? Is this a question I actually want answered? I am not so sure but I know how shippers work so I am curious.

Also UGH, the Canadian channels never have previews for next week's episodes. WHY DO YOU HATE US, CITY TV. What am I missing that's so awesome?

    • psycicflower says:

Promo for the next episode of Fringe 'Subject 13' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xchn_CxR1b8 I watch a few American shows and people tend not to have the promo on the end but if you search 'show name' promo and then date added you usually find it pretty quick. If not find out the next episode name and search that.

Rule 34 covers so much more so I'd say there's definitely people out there who ship Walter and Bell. Quick look at pairing list on AO3 and there's one Walter Bishop/William Bell fic. Who knows about livejournal/dreamwidth or the pit.
