Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’: Blink Liveblog!

I really enjoy the atmosphere around liveblogs and I’ve been tossing around the idea of doing one for an episode of Doctor Who. The problem is that I tend to watch episodes on weeknights after work, and that’s a bad time for…well, THE REST OF THE WORLD. That’s why liveblogs these days are now on the weekends.

So I’m aware that a lot of you won’t be able to participate in this tonight and I’m sorry. We will do a larger Doctor Who liveblog in the future, but I know how special this episode is to a lot of fans, so I think it’ll be fun if we can all smash our keyboards for 45 minutes at the same time.

Tonight’s liveblog of “Blink” will start at 8:00pm PST. That’s 11:00pm on the east coast and FOUR AM IN LONDON. Jesus, I am sorry I swear.

So, we all start at 8:00pm PST exactly and treat the comments as our liveblogging space. Reply to other people, make your own comments about the episode, and make sure the lights aren’t off because I’ve heard this episode is TERRIFYING. Also, there are some of us who know NOTHING about this episode, so please don’t spoil anything!

Sounds good? Then off we go!

EDIT: Because it wasn’t clear enough, there will be a normal review of “Blink” posted tomorrow.

Now do I get up at 4am when I have school later? The dilemmas you put me through Mark!

  2. vermillioncity says:

Oh fuuu. Ah well, I'll catch up in the morning. Hope it's super awesome for you all :D.

ALSO, Mark – any thoughts on when we'll do the AVPS liveblog? I AM TOO EXCITED FOR IT.

  3. Helena says:

Are you going to post thoughts? We need to know what you think! CURSE MY ENGLISHNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • CuriousApe says:

I second this. Mark, you make me want to move to the US.

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Yes, there will be a normal review up tomorrow afternoon.

      • lizziecharlton says:

Ooh, goody 🙂 That means that those of us who can't be up at 4am can still see what you make of it 😀 I hope you enjoy it and that the amount of hype around the episode doesn't lead to any underwhelmingness (I know that can happen sometimes when people hype up an episode as awesome :))

  4. StarGirlAlice says:

I'm so glad that this is for 'Blink' because there was every chance that I would get up at 4am to watch any other episode, but I vowed after the first time I saw it (from behind a cushion, when it was on tape because then I could pause it if I got too scared) that I would never watch it again. Yes, I am a big child, but I am horribly scared of the dark and am left on my own in my house I lot. I just don't think I can hack it.
That being said, enjoy everyone, because it is really good, just really scary.
    🙂

  5. Hanah says:

Hmm, I am still not sure about this. I mean, I'm sure it will be amazing and awesome and SO MUCH FUN, but Blink is a really awesome episode and so so good to get utterly lost in. And I think stopping to read comments nad keysmash the first time you watch it may detract from some of the awesome.

But then I also want to keysmash and flail about it because I do love the ep! Oh the dilemma…

  6. NB2000 says:

A few weeks ago I'd have said "Pff 4AM? No problem, I can so do that" but I'm fighting off a cold and it's my grandfather's birthday tomorrow so no liveblog for me.

I rewatched the episode the other night with only my desk lamp to light the room (because the bulb in the ceiling lamp had blown and I caouldn't be bothered to fix it so late at night). Spooky dark atmosphere made it even more amazing. Just saying.

  7. F.A.R. says:

That's brilliant. It's a good choice of episode, as "Blink" sort of demands that one have a few friends around.

  8. HungryLikeLupin says:

The fact that this is happening on my scheduled night off is clearly a sign that the universe loves me. OMG so excited.

  9. psycicflower says:

Don't look until you've seen the episode but Blink fans need to check out the ript apparel t shirt for today.

As much fun as live blogs are I can't make it to this one because it'll be ungodly o'clock in the morning and I will be sleeping. Hope you all enjoy the episode.

    You are not prepared

    • Openattheclose says:

The Gentlemen! To be honest, I think I find them scarier than what is in Blink.

      • psycicflower says:

It's such a long time since I watched Hush that I can't really decide but they're definitely super creepy. You have to love the fact both of them are responsible for traumatising so many people.

    • NB2000 says:

I need that t shirt in my life!

Edit: Oh god there's a hoodie version, even better/worse (my bank balance thinks the latter)

      • psycicflower says:

*devils advocate* The postage is really cheap as well. For the tshirt and shipping combined it only cost me about 14 euro. *devils advocate*

    • mkjcaylor says:

Oops. I may have bought the shirt. And also advertised MarkWatches.net.

    • mr_bobby says:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH I watched this episode for the first time at 2am the other day, AND SHAT MYSELF. Figuratively ¬_¬

Have to lol at the first guy on the right of clappy dude though… His face totally says "shit… Did I leave the oven on?!"

    • bookling says:

So, I don't know if you watch How I Met Your Mother, but there was an episode earlier this season where everybody had an inside joke that Ted didn't know about, and every time something awesome would happen they'd all bow and go, "The Gentlemen!"

And all I could think was, "THE GENTLEMEN." *shudder*

    • potlid007 says:

dear god i had completely forgotten about these people. now, i am scared of blink and them. it's going to be a lonnngggggg night

    • Jas says:

      YOUR GIF 4jf910wejx98q23ndc981xn9n23898qwas Priceless. Ahhh.

    • Amanda says:

Eek, why did I have to run across this gif at 4am? Particularly since Hush is one of the two Buffy episodes that to this day I can NOT bring myself to rewatch (the other being that one with the hospital *shudder*).

  10. Treasure Cat says:

I will not be joining in this time for two reasons, 1. 4am is a leetle bit early, but thats cool I know it couldnt be avoided, and 2. I wouldnt watch Blink in the dark if you paid me. Have a great time everyone and make sure you pee before you start or keep a spare pair of pants handy 😉 I'll catch up on all the comments tomorrow.

  11. diane says:

Terrifying. Yes. YOU CAN NOT POSSIBLY BE PREPARED.

Sorry, it's past my bedtime on the right coast, but I'll enjoy the comments tomorrow. Y'all have fun, now.

  12. meggers says:

4am? Ah well, I'm likely doing an all-nighter anyway! If I get enough of this stupid assignment done, I'm there!

And I know it's been said before but seriously. You. Are. Not. Prepared.

  13. RocketDarkness says:

Ooh, I may have to attend this thing. West Coast <3.

  14. essayel says:

Good luck pal. I'm not getting up at 4am to spend an hour behind the sofa 😀

  15. ravendaine says:

I'm studying in England for a semester and I stayed up until 4am+ to watch my beloved Packers win the Super Bowl, but however much I love Blink, I'll have to catch up later. Darned classes. Who knew that studying abroad involved actual….studying. Enjoy the episode, Mark and everyone else!

  16. Stephen_M says:

Just wanted to say good luck as 4am really is out of the question on a work night.

That said… sorry, I've gotta say this… I do wish you were liveblogging ANY episode but Blink. Really not sure how well it's going to work watching this particular episode and splitting your attention between story and computer and fear it'll rob it of a lot of its power. Still fingers crossed… will you be doing a normal review as well or just the liveblog?

  17. kaybee42 says:

might go to bed now (ten to 7) and wake up for 4am… we'll see. But Mark DEFINITELY watch in the dark!!! But I just want to say I don't want your expectations to be *too* high, I mean, it's not Saw or anything…But HAVE FUN!

  18. ldwy says:

I believe I can do it! Hurrah. 11 pm is late, but not too late 🙂 And I'll actually be out before, so this is good.

  19. JaneFlower says:

Could you please post a review also (even if its short) for those of us who won't be able to follow the liveblog? I love Blink!

  20. psycicflower says:

I was trying to decide on an appropriatley creepy gif and the Gentlemen never fail.

  21. Narcissaa says:

    <img src="http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lg9ylqCdiQ1qd1agyo1_400.gif">

FOUR A.M SCHMOUR A.M! I will be here and my lights will be out because terrifying myself is the only way to watch this ep! I should probably nap soon in preparation.

  22. WhatsMyName says:

4am? Yeah sure, I shall be there 🙂 It will involve me setting my alarm to 4, waking up and watching Blink alone while my mother and cats are asleep but hey who 'needs' blinking anyway? 😉

  23. arctic_hare says:

Hmmm, I'll probably miss the liveblog, sadly. Oh well, I'm glad to hear you can type and pay attention at the same time, and that there'll be a normal review too. I am concerned about you being overhyped for the episode, but at the same time I think you're still underprepared.

Also, what the heck are you people talking about, in the dark is the BEST way to watch it, I do so all the time! 😀

    • Narcissaa says:

I totally agree with your simultaneous feelings re; overhyped plus unprepared. It kind of worries me and makes me just want this ep over! xD

    • RocketDarkness says:

Amen. What's the point of watching a scary movie if you're not going to immerse yourself as much as possible? I always wait until the evening to play Resident Evil and Fatal Frame games, and it makes them even better.

    • NB2000 says:

Watching in the dark is TOTALLY the way to do it. If you can somehow arrange it so that there's bad weather too? Even better.

  24. Albion19 says:

4am to late for me, gotta be up early for work. But I'll enjoy reading the comments 🙂

  26. GoddessMER says:

Ehhh… I tell you what, I honestly don't think you can do a liveblog for "Blink." It would really take away from the story to have you going back and forth from the TV to your laptop, to the TV to your laptop. My hope would be for all those who haven't seen it, this would be the quietest liveblog in Mark's history, because there wouldn't be much more than:

    "Holy…"

and all of us who have seen it, and love it, replying:

    "I know, right?"

    • FlameRaven says:

Unless you're watching the episode on your laptop.

      • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Seriously, guys, I have been liveblogging for years. I can do this. Please stop telling me I can't pay attention.

        • bookling says:

It's really not that hard. And Blink is one of those episodes that has a lot going on, so even if you're not liveblogging you won't catch everything the first time. It won't dampen your appreciation of it.

I predict there will be lots of keysmashing, though.

        • GoddessMER says:

It wasn't a slam on any non ability of yours to pay attention, but the fact that this episode is INTENSE, and I wouldn't want to be distracted by the laptop… 🙂

    • knut_knut says:

psh I have faith in Mark's liveblogging skills

but I know what you mean

  27. darth_eowyn says:

Not fair! I'm from the East Coast. I've been in England exactly one week for study abroad, and _now_ you decide to do Blink liveblog. The universe is conspiring against me (or just wants me to stay up late). 🙁

However, I love this episode to pieces, so I may just have to stay up.

  28. Mauve_Avenger says:

"Blink" was one of the episodes I was spoiled on before I started watching Doctor Who, "the Shakespeare Code" being the other one. I think the only other spoiler I know came from accidentally listening to Chameleon Circuit, who come to think of it also have a song based on "Blink," as well.

  29. feminerdist says:

I'm so glad for this liveblog, since it's the very FIRST one I've been able to take part in due to my work schedule. Seriously, and I've been reading your reviews since Twilight. So to say I'm excited would be a huge understatement.

However, not to hate on your multi-tasking ability, but if you get so caught up in the story FEEL FREE TO IGNORE US! I'm sure no one here will mind!

    • nanceoir says:

Yeah, I second the whole "ignore the 'live' part of the liveblog" thing if you (or anyone, really), gets too wrapped up in the episode or too distracted or whatever.

That said, I think I might try to be here for the liveblog. I mean, The Daily Show and Colbert are repeats this week, anyway.

    • HungryLikeLupin says:

This, yes. ^_^ And I have to say, I'm sort of glad that my first liveblog is going to be one that will probably be a little quieter and easier to follow. 😆 Hopefully I'll be able to ease into things this way.

  30. Steph says:

Neat. A lot of the 'scary' Who episodes kind of explore creepy concepts but are still fine for kids and everything. Blink is actual horror movie scary.

  31. flamingpie says:

I may take part. It's only 11 for me but I'm also ill so we'll see. Although to be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Blink, personally. Won't get into why yet, because spoilers, obviously. XD

I do hope it matches up to the hype for you though Mark!

  32. Starsea28 says:

Damn, Mark, if only I were on the early shift, this would be POSSIBLE! Aargh.

  33. Starsea28 says:

Oh good, I'm not alone. They are CREEPY AS FUCK.

  34. illusclaire says:

I wouldn't worry about Mark missing anything, guys – I watched it with my sister, which meant constant riffing, and also I am entirely cynical about everything NuWho in general (Tennant in particular).. but it was PLENTY creepy.

  35. nanceoir says:

I'm guessing Mark watched "Family of Blood" last night, since he posted the "Human Nature" review yesterday.

    • Avit says:

OH OKAY my noobness, let me show you it :'D

(I've been going through his archives for the works I know about, these past two or three days. It is pretty exite.)

  36. rainbowsinside says:

That would be 10pm for me. I'm never watching that episode that late again. Me and my boyfriend were watching some episodes last week (we're both watching them for the first time) and it was late so we're like "Oh we'll just watch one more and go to bed."

I had trouble falling asleep that night. 🙁

  37. Matt says:

Sorry if I've missed something, but what happened to "Family of Blood"?

    • Matt says:

See, this is what happens when you get distracted mid-post and wander off…

Just read the post 2 above. ta v much.

  38. Gil says:

I just really hope you haven't been overhyped for it, because I know I was.

  39. hassibah says:

So true, and I don't really scare easily from movies, though for some reason the Gentlemen's henchmen creep me out a lot more.

  40. Hypatia_ says:

I can TOTALLY do 11pm. This is going to be really interesting…

  41. FlameRaven says:

Indeed, I need to get up at 7 EST for work, so I usually sleep at 11.

Totally looking forward to reading the comments tomorrow, though. These blogs are my #1 entertainment during lunch breaks.

  42. lezah says:

Damn it, I'll still be in school (Extension 2 Maths trololol).

    HAVE FUN!!

  43. katherinemh says:

"make sure the lights aren’t off"

The first time I watched this episode, it was the middle of the night, by myself, during a thunderstorm, and the lights kept flickering. Yeah. Not such a great idea.

    • banans13 says:

ME TOO. Most terrifying night of my LIFE.

    • Hypatia_ says:

But you'll get the full effect that way… ::is evil::

    • Aimee says:

The first time I watched it my friend had come over, sat me down in front of the TV, and said "We're going to make you watch Doctor who for the first time in your life. He turned out all the lights, and put it on. And then sat there creepily and silently without a word.

  44. EmmylovesWho says:

Damn you, university, for getting in the way of this.
I'll read the ractions in the morning with interest.

  45. zulaihaha says:

Yeah, I wouldn't watch Blink in the middle of the night if you payed me. I'm a wuss.
I look forward to your post tomorrow!
MAKE SURE YOU WATCH IN THE DARK.

  46. OMG. I didn't sleep for weeks after that episode. So bloody good.

  47. Anseflans says:

5 am… Dilemma, dilemma… On one hand, I have classes tomorrow, and a concert at night, so I really want to be awake for that…
On second hand… If I wake up at 4:50, watch the episode of 42 minutes, then go back to sleep at 6, I only have to wake up at 8:30 am…
On third hand, I'm afraid I won't be able to go back to sleep after experiencing the ABSOLUTE HORROR that is Blink.

So I'll probably pass on this one. Sorry.

  48. shyguy3450 says:

I watched it yesterday knowing I wouldn't be able to do the liveblog, but I had a lot of the creepiness ruined for me because my crappy internet kept breaking in the middle of it and kicking me off Netflix. Kinda ruins the suspense when you have to get up and turn on all the lights so you can scream at your modem.

    • Fuchsia says:

That's what I'm afraid of. Netflix sporadically has issues with streaming to my TV. Bah. One day, I'll be able to buy the DVDs!

  49. nyssaoftraken74 says:

I first saw Blink on a big screen at a Doctor Who convention. I remember when I first worked out the date of the convention versus the TV schedule and I was a bit disappointed. Of all the weeks, I thought, why did it have to be the Doctor-lite episode? It's Steven Moffat…I should have known better, shouldn't I?

    • echinodermata says:

"Blink on a big screen at a Doctor Who convention."

Was it awesome? I bet it was amazing.

But also, the comment's a little spoilery, I think, regarding Doctor-lite.

  50. kittiemckintosh says:

    Have fun and sleep well.

  51. MowerOfLorn says:

Yay! I actually get to watch a liveblog for once.

Yeah, yeah, twelve hour time-difference to most of North America over here. In fact, usually, if it was a normal weekday I still wouldn't be able to attend, because I have class, but today I can in-fact be online! Woot!

I am slightly afraid we'll distract you, Mark. Listen- you need to focus on the episode! Blink and you'll miss the awesome. (*gets lynched for bad pun*)

  52. rosieb says:

I totally won't be up (FOUR AM – if it had been two I might've gone with it) but I hope you all have fun!

We should do an 'exciting/funny/terrifying situations in which we saw this episode for the first time' thread after Mark's posted the full review, so we can be spoiley. I have a good story about my girlfriend's watching experience that I think lots of people empathise with and/or can top.

  53. PeterRabid says:

This should be my first liveblog, so I'm looking forward to it. Thankfully, I'm also in California, so I won't have to stay up until four. I've seen this episode about a dozen times, I love it so much! YOU ARE NOT PREPARED.

  54. sabra_n says:

I don't have work until noon tomorrow. I'LL BE THERE. 😀

ETA – Of course as soon I wrote that I became inexplicably sleepy. Grargh. Must. Stay. Awake.

  55. Hotaru-hime says:

I wish you had done this yesterday, when I didn't have work the next day.
Enjoy the liveblog everyone! I can't wait for the review tomorrow!

  56. ShayzGirl says:

That's 9pm my time! OMG! Excite! I have my night schedule planned out so I will be ready to go at the exact time. Which means I need to go make dinner right now, otherwise I'll lose my schedule. Ugh. Not fair. But I need food if I'm going to survive through the night. Don't want to crash cos of my IR because I didn't eat food. I have an awesome link to share with you, Mark, and you, everyone else, but the image is spoilery. So I'll save it for after the episode. OMG!

  57. keepthepunkrock says:

    OMG EXCITE

    SO EXCITE

YEAH I'M STAYING UP TO WATCH A DEEPLY TERRIFYING EPISODE OF DOCTOR WHO AT 4AM YOU CANNOT STOP ME OMG EXCITE

  58. Rattie Mattie says:

Me and the fiance are definitely showing up for this. Blink was the first episode of New Who I ever saw. It was on accident, and I was flipping channels and stopped because it looked interesting. I thought it was some random thriller. I did not realize it was Doctor Who until much later.

  59. Tilja says:

It's not even time yet and there are already so many pages of comments! You can tell this episode is really special! For my part, it's my very favourite of all of DW and I especially watched it with my lights off (well, it was daylight, so it's not such a great thing at all xD).

I hope you'll enjoy this episode as much as I did, really. I don't know if by the time you watch it I'll be around since it¡ll be 1am where I live, so I wish you right now all the fun you can get and more scare than your heart can take :3

    It's completely worth it!

  60. fakehepburn says:

    Hey Whovians,

I wish I could be present for this liveblog, but unfortunately I have been awake for 46 hours.

    FORTY-SIX HOURS.
I NEED TO SLEEP NOW OR I AM PROBABLY DEFINITELY GOING TO DIE.

Anyway enjoy "Blink." I have multiple hilarious macros and gifs I will post in tomorrow's review, but now I must pass out.

    YAAAAAAAY!!!

  62. xpanasonicyouthx says:

    SOON

  63. hanslabyrinth says:

Oh god, 4am. I'm already nodding off at my laptop.
I guess this means MOAR COFFEE.

  64. goldenspiderduck says:

So, after Blink is over and done, what episode will you be waiting for next? I personally can't wait for Marks review of Midnight.

    • pica_scribit says:

I think Mark doesn't even know the names of a lot of the future episodes, so let's play it safe, shall we? There's a lot of episodes I am very excited about, but I don't want to skew Mark's expectations. I'd rather have the pleasure of watching his innocent mind be blown by unexpected awesome.

      • goldenspider22 says:

OOPS Sorry!!! I didn't think Titles were a big deal since he's heard of Blink. Never Mind then…*walk of shame*

  65. pica_scribit says:

I told my flatmate I have a date with Mark tonight. I've combed my hair and I've got on my best cozy pjs and slippers. Hey, nothing's too good for my Mark!

  66. MowerOfLorn says:

Eek! So excited! For once I'm actually going to be online in time to liveblog! Yay!

*goes to get her blink copy ready*

  67. MowerOfLorn says:

    *tries posting*

….just a test, here. Intensedebates seems to be eating my comments.

If this does show up, though, here's a question. How can you refresh just the comments feed, not the whole page, so you don't go back to page one?

  68. plaidpants says:

MY FIRST LIVEBLOG!! I'm so excited to be able to make this one! yay!

  69. medea says:

Here in Costa Rica we're all set and excited to rewatch Blink and see the liveblogging in action 🙂

    • plaidpants says:

I was just almost making plans to go to Costa Rica for Spring Break! My siblings are going to visit my sister who's living there for a few months, but its just too expensive ><

      • medea says:

Yes! Tickets are really expensive, and eating and transportation can get pricey too :/ BUT it can be done on the inexpensive side if you fly Spirit (although it will break your spirit), couchsurf and/or stay at hostels and eat at local food places instead of franchises or chains… It is SO worth it. This place is beautiful 🙂 And Costa Rica also has super cool Mark Reads/Mark Watches fans XD

  70. Fuchsia says:

Same here! They're so absolutely terrifying. And this gif is wonderfully creepy.

  71. xghostproof says:

I am so excited for this, it'll be my first Mark Watches liveblog.

I may actually go make some popcorn for this.

  72. Fuchsia says:

Okay, I'm awake from my nap and ready to DO THIS!

  73. Meggs says:

Ooo boy, so excited for this! My first liveblog experience! (And while I have to focus on schoolwork and can't actually watch the ep, I've seen it so many times that just following the comments will be enough!)

  74. LornMower says:

So, guys- I need to ask; is there anyway to refresh just the comments, not the whole page, so I don't get sent back to page one everytime?

  75. flamingpie says:

I think just so we don't have any cases of spoiling mark by saying "OH MY GOD THIS AND THIS EPISODE IS AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD LIVEBLOG THAT IN THE FUTURE" there should just be a liveblog of the movie. XD

  76. Emily Crnk says:

I can practically see the people around the globe bouncing in front of their computers, eagerly awaiting the keysmashes, with their popcorn, brownies, cozy slippers.
Seriously, its amazing all of the different people connected through this, just fantastic. THANK YOU mark, for doing this 🙂

  77. ThreeBooks says:

Hnnngggg, screw Macbeth I can always do that tomorrow during Bio. Watching Mark freak out is far more important for my life.

  78. vampirerevenant says:

Holy crap, I'm actually here for liveblogging? Awesome! 😀 <3 <3

  79. Will says:

Argh! I currently don't have access to DVD's or anything, but I'll definitely be here watching the comments!

    SO MUCH EXCITE

You know what? Maybe I will watch along. I'm already sitting here with my cheez-its and orange juice and nothing better to do while my boy is at a concert without me.

    Bring it on Moffat!

So how does it work for liveblogging? Just press F5 and click to the last page of comments, or is there an easier way to follow the action?

    • goldenspider22 says:

I'm just refreshing with the Sort by; Last Activity. This is my first live-blog too so i would also like to know the easiest way to keep up with the action as it happens.

    • Fuchsia says:
