Mark Watches Schedule!

Hello everyone! I just dropped some serious knowledge over on Mark Reads regarding a new project and some scheduling issues. I suggest you read that first and then come back here.

Ok, you’re back! Yay! Despite that I think a lot of you clearly know I am running two sites at the same time, some of you are not. Well….now you know! But I do like to treat them as two separate entities with two separate communities, so I think it’s only fair that you all get your own piece specific to this community.

As you’ve surely read by now, I am going to take the weekends off from posting so that I can backlog reviews and get a more decent schedule going over on Mark Reads. I would like that same schedule to happen over here as well. We’ve been moving along at a great pace here, but I feel bad that I announced Mark Watches Fringe and then was unable to find any time to review a single older episode. I’d like to change that.

From here on out, you can expect new reviews every week day. I will say that there is a much higher chance that you will have posts on the weekend on this site than there will be for Mark Reads. For example, once Fringe starts airing again in a few weeks, reviews will go up on Saturday morning. If things calm down enough that I am able to get ahead of myself, I will try to also squeeze some Torchwood into my Doctor Who viewings after I finish series two. That’s not a promise, but I’ll try.

I also want to confirm some things I’ve said online and just list them hear. After I finally catch up to Doctor Who in real time, the next series I will start is Avatar: The Last Airbender. After that, I am super excited to finally begin the newest Battlestar: Galactica series. That should honestly keep me busy through most of 2011 and once I get closer to finishing B:G, I’ll let you guys know what I’m doing next.

All right, now it’s your turn. Thoughts? Expressions of despair? Squees? GIF explosions? Lay it on me.

  1. Adam Atkinson says:

I honestly wouldn’t bother with Torchwood at all. But it’s your life.

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

      IT'S NOW OR NEVER
      I AIN'T GONNA LIVE FOREVER
I JUST WANNA LIVE WHILE I'M ALIIIIIIIVVVVEEEEE

      • susie130 says:

What? No. Torchwood is AWESOME. Very different from Doctor Who in a lot of ways, though. Also, Bon Jovi reference FTW.

      • syntheticjesso says:

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who randomly "finishes" Bon Jovi lyrics when people say them. Every time people say they are "halfway there" with something, they give me funny looks for courteously finishing their Bon Jovi quote. No appreciation!

      • Matthew says:

        Suggested cut down Torchwood schedule:

        1.1 Everything Changes
        1.3 Ghost Machine
        1.7 Greeks Bearing Gifts
        1.8 They Keep Killing Suzie
        1.10 Out of Time
        1.12 Captain Jack Harkness
        1.13 End of Days

Would give you a good overview in about half the time.

        • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Not a bad idea! I'll consider it.

          • ather says:

The problem with cutting the show down and only watching certain episodes is that you’re going to miss a lot of the things that make the show so good. The list above cuts some of, imo, the best episodes of season 1.

        • MichelleZB says:

Why watch it in a half-assed manner if he's going to watch it? Also, no-one's going to agree which episodes are "important". I'd say Countrycide is one of the more important episodes of Season 1; obviously you don't agree. Part of the fun of Mark Watches is that he'd get to watch the whole season and come up with his own favourites.

I don't understand how we keep talking about there being "time" to watch episodes. It's not like there is a deadline for Mark to finish watching stuff, is there? It can just take as long as it takes, as far as I'm concerned.

          • xpanasonicyouthx says:

NO THERE IS A CLEAR DEADLINE AND I HAVE TO BE DONE TOMORROW.

Good point. If I watch it, I might as well watch all of it.

            • rys says:

You could always watch a few eps at a time and give more general reviews on the show/characters/arcs. The thing with Torchwood is that it can be SUPER AWESOME one episode and then not so much the next, and putting a few together might be a good way to talk about it and also save you time.

              • Will says:

I agree with this, I also view Ep 2 as more important than Ep 3 in terms of character development and such.

Even if Mark just groups the entire series in one review that would be fine.

                • NyssaOfTraken says:

Just adding my support to including Ep 2 because that's the one that really sets to format of the show (if it has such a thing) right through to the end of Season 2.

Tbh, cherry picking episodes based on someone else's schedule is like going out to dinner and always letting someone else order for you. Just because those choices appeal to your friend's taste doesn't necessarily mean you would share those preferences if you chose for yourself.

There is also, of course, another spinoff to Doctor Who, but we probably shouldn't say too much about that just yet.

          • whatsername says:

Well, this post does kind of make it sound like Mark is trying to budget his time somewhat, and wants to do something not-Who-Universe related after he finishes with Doctor Who, so yeah, maybe time is a factor. But, I could be wrong of course, that's just the impression I get.

          • rys says:

I think the timing issue is mainly because of Doctor Who — if Mark wants to watch it in the order it all goes in 'officially' then TW1 slots in after DW2. Watching them both isn't necessary of course, but does make the storylines mesh.

        • whatsername says:

I agree with this as "Cliff Notes: Torchwood Season 1" with the exception that I would add 1.4 Cyberwoman, which is semi-important for character development.

If you don't have time to get to it, Mark, you don't have time, but I will say that TW 2/DW 4 really do, IMO, make for one fuller story. They're *much* better together.

        • _thirty2flavors says:

lololol @ skipping 1×04. there are not enough +1s in the world.

    • _thirty2flavors says:

This comment made me laugh, but I agree. Sorry Torchwood, I'm just not that into you.

      • hassibah says:

I read on the internets that the show gets way better in S3 so I got that and I enjoyed it but I really have no interest to watch anything else, I might check out the parts with James Marsters but that's about it. It probably helps that Capn Sexy is my least favourite character in the Whoverse.
        Unpopular opinions ftw.

        • hassibah says:

Huh, my old ID profile seems to have vanished, weird!

        • _thirty2flavors says:

I did like COE, but that's basically because I'm a big RTD stan, and it would have been better if I'd cared about the characters — but since I disliked s1 and s2 so much, I didn't, and a lot of the should-be-emotional scenes were weakened.

It probably helps that Capn Sexy is my least favourite character in the Whoverse.
          Unpopular opinions ftw.

OMFG ME TOO. ~YOU ARE NOT ALONE

          • hassibah says:

            Yay!
Oh man, I actually enjoyed Gwen and Yanto and fam in CoE, actually like 2/3 of my enjoyment of it prolly came out of just listening to their delightful accents and I'd rather not have that ruined for me.

            • _thirty2flavors says:

I really liked Gwen in COE, which was a first, and I like her and Rhys, but yeah, it's hard for me to suddenly care about characters in s3 after two seasons of not caring. Oh well. LOL I respect and support your decision to not watch more.

  2. Kaci says:

You're going to do A:tLA? THAT NOISE YOU JUST HEARD WAS MY LIFE BEING MADE.

YOU PICK ALL THE BEST THINGS. <3333333

  3. hungriestgame says:

I'm so excited about Avatar! And Battlestar. All of 'em.

  4. PolitiGal says:

What's the beef with Torchwood, Adam? IMO, not as good as Dr. Who, but certainly an incredibly refreshing look at a society (obviously mythical) where open and fluid sexuality is commonplace. I don't think anything similar has been done before or since.
    Also, it's BSG :).

    • Adam Atkinson says:

As well as being not as good as Dr Who there’s no need to watch
it to keep up with what’s going on in the parent series and it does
seem that Mark has plenty to be getting on with. For instance,
given that BSG is also on the list…

  5. Violets are Blue says:

I JUST SIGNED ON FOR THE AVATARNESS. OH MY GOSH YAY.

  6. Roxie says:

    WHERE IS THE BUFFY??
Also, I think you would greatly enjoy "MISFITS". A British show about heroes without a cause that has some socioeconomic stuff going on too. Plus there are only 13 episodes so far!

    • PolitiGal says:

Wait, has Buffy not been watched yet??!! what other stuff is there to do??

      • xpanasonicyouthx says:

I will watch Buffy, I promise. I just didn't want to do one Whedon program after another.

I am determined to watch Misfits. I haven't yet. I might do it for Mark Watches soon, if I have the time. If not, I will watch it on my own.

    • Megan says:

I figured Mark had seen Buffy. Has Mark not seen Buffy. REALLY HAS MARK NOT SEEN BUFFY? Here I am telling him how I like Doctor Who as much as Buffy and he does not know what I mean. That is a sad thing.

    • Emmy says:

      Seconding Misfits. It's fabulous.

  7. Laura says:

i JUST finished Avatar and i love it a little bit too much TOO MUCH AWESOME FOR A KID'S SHOW

  8. Alex says:

Oh man I am so excited for you to read Battlestar! It's one of my favorite series. You seriously keep making my day, first firefly now this! My inner nerd is practically humming! One thing though since I have ocd and I also wish you to be all cool for your new battlestar audience, it is commonly abriviated BSG. Don't ask me why but that's just the way it is haha

  9. notemily says:

Oh, when I read your subject line, at first I thought you were going to watch that great new show, "Scheduling."

Ha ha ha. I kill me.

(AVATAR AND BATTLESTAR. SO MUCH AWESOMENESS.)

  10. agrinningfool says:

    AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER! *SQUEE*

  11. Jerssica says:

Oh man I've been meaning to finally watch Battlestar! Now I'll just hold off and watch it "with you". And I'm excited for you to squeeze some Torchwood in. It's so different from Doctor Who but GOD I love it.

  12. megthebrennan says:

Avatar the Last Airbender AND BSG in the future?? SO EXCITE!!!
not gonna lie though, I love Dr. Who and never got into Torchwood. But best of luck to you!

  13. Syd K. says:

  14. Dena says:

YOU ARE DOING AVATAR? I AM FILLED WITH JOY!!!

    And BATTLESTAR!!! EEEEEE!!!!

If you’re looking for more suggestions, I’d love to see you do Buffy, someday, but you’ve got enough on your plate!

  15. cjazzle says:

    FRINGE! SQUEEEE!!!

    BSG!! SQUEEEEE!!!!

    that is all. =)

  16. elusivebreath says:

I'm happy because I do like the next two shows you're doing, but I'm sad because they're not Buffy. I AM CONFLICTED

  17. valdora says:

    Don't burn yourself out Mark!

I am very much looking forward to your Avatar recaps! I know you will really love the show. Can't wait.

  18. leenwitit says:

It does. Not even just fans of the show. It displeases fans in general. But fans of the show in particular. You know how there are bad movies that are so bad they are funny? Or so bad they are good? This movie is just bad.

  19. leenwitit says:

MARK! Who is recommending you these shows and books? Because, I must say, I am a huge fan and I want to make out with them on the astral plane or something. ~*~SoUlMaTeS~*~

But seriously, Avatar?! COULD NOT BE MORE PUMPED!!!!

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Lots of people! I am making a Suggestion page tomorrow so everyone can suggest TV shows for me to watch.

  20. Quizzical says:

avatar the last airbender is PURE AND UNADULTURATED JOY AND I LOVE IT AND AM VERY EXCITE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO WATCH IT.

You're watching Scheduling? I love that show! šŸ˜€

  22. crazyravenclaw says:

ATLA! AJ;SDLAKSDFJ MARK YOU ARE WATCHING ALL THE THINGS I LOVE

BSG has been on my list for such a long time. I'll definitely watch along with you for that one.

  23. MichelleZB says:

Also, does anyone have any ATLA GIFS that can express our joy?

  24. Megan says:

I didn't even realize Avatar: The Last Airbender had such a dedicated following. This is available on Netflix? I will be watching new with Mark.

    Yay I love Mark Watches.

  25. sabra_n says:

    EEE YAY AVATAR

    THE GOOD AVATAR THAT IS

    :DDDDD

  26. Maddi says:

Holy crap, AVATAR? I might have to get a username for this.

  27. niamheryoumind says:

    All my favourites! šŸ˜€
If you ever are looking for something to watch after all of this excitement, I'd like to suggest the BBC's Being Human. I think you'd like it. There are two seasons of 6 and 8 episodes out so far, the third season hasn't shown yet.

    • Starsea28 says:

Seconding this suggestion. Being Human is… let's put it this way, how modern vampires and werewolves SHOULD be written.

    • Vicki_Louise says:

Thirding this suggestion. Love being Human! The third series is starting very soon on BBC3, in a few weeks in think, so YAY!

  28. Anseflans says:

    YAY Avatar!!!
Oh, question: Have you seen A Very Potter Musical/Sequel already, and if not: are you still planning on reviewing it?

  29. Laureli says:

    YESSSS AVATARRRRR <3 <3 <3 <3

  30. wendebular says:

Yay, BSG! Is it only the final season? I have been waiting forever to start watching it, since my boyfriend hadn't watched any when he moved in with me and now I am dying because we were only a couple of episodes into the first season when I realised the rest of the files were corrupted. Gah.

  31. Danielle says:

    AIRBENDER FUCK YEAH.

  32. corporatecake says:

Asfjkdsljfa;klwf adf af I JUST POSTED ON THE OTHER SITE, BUT SERIOUSLY, I EMAILED YOU A WHILE BACK SAYING YOU SHOULD WATCH ATLA AND EVEN THOUGH A THOUSAND PEOPLE PROBABLY TOLD YOU TO DO THAT AND I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, I FEEL PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE AND IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW.

    BRB DYING OF HAPPINESS.

  33. Sarah says:

Avatar the last airbender is amazing! You’ll love it šŸ™‚

  34. psycicflower says:

I've never watched Avatar but it's one of those shows that I keep thinking I should so I'll wait and watch along with you. I only watched BSG last year so I can't wait to rewatch it with other people, should be very interesting.

I'll echo what some others have said, just watch (and read) things at whatever pace makes you comfortable. I don't want you to stop loving something because you end up feeling stressed about having to deliver to us. We're not going to disappear into the ether just because you don't post reviews every single day. This is about you're experiences watching popular shows for the first time and it's amazing that you've posted so much already.

    <img src="http://i53.tinypic.com/2ears6w.jpg&quot; border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">

  35. diane says:

No problem, Mark. Weekends are for weekending. Don't burn yourself out.

    And, YAY for Torchwood!

  36. stellans says:

I honestly don't see how you do all that you do, but thank you for doing it. LOL.

  37. Eric says:

When will you watch Farscape? (Personally, I would place that before the new Battlestar series)

  38. Fusionman says:

Hey Fusionman here. Sorry for no triva yesterday. Computer went weird. My thought on the next plan? YESSS YESSS!!! I love the Last Airbender TV series!! I do say you need to watch the horrible movie. YOU MUST FEEL OUR PAIN!

Sorry. Sorry. I’m still insulted over the movie. Wait BS:G too!!?? Man you are amazing.

  39. monkeybutter says:

Totally exited for ATLA! Good choices, Mark!

  40. RocketDarkness says:

Avatar, as far as I am concerned, rivals Harry Potter in the sheer joy and magic it can induce in a human being. Super-excited for you to reach that point (as well as for when you reach Season 5, too!)

  41. luvuna says:

!!! I just started watching Avatar a few weeks ago! So excite!!

  42. arnenieberding says:

    YIPYIP, BRING IT ON.

  43. Morgan says:

OMG YOU ARE GOING TO WATCH BATTLESTAR GALACTICA!!?? MY LIFE = MADE.

Behind Lost and Fringe, BSG is probably one of my favorite shows of all time. I think you're really going to love all the themes that are incorporated šŸ˜€ I might have to actually rewatch it with you. I AM EXCITE!

also very excited about you reviewing Fringe!!! It's definitely my favorite show on right now.

  44. Caraaaa says:

    AVATAAAAR OH MY GOD
    <img src=http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lem2gn4WNu1qb7nx5.gif>

  45. Emmy says:

You're watching Doctor Who and I didn't know. *shoots self*

  46. arctic_hare says:

Oooh, Avatar:TLA. I've been meaning to watch that, so I think I'll watch it along with you. =D

Re: schedule – fine by me! Now I don't have to worry about catching up on stuff after the weekend :DD

Lastly, I have two suggestions for if you need stuff to watch after all this: Pushing Daisies, and Cowboy Bebop. PD is what I can best describe as "Luna Lovegood: The Show", because like her, it is quirky, weird, hilarious, touching, and sometimes really sad, with an absolutely amazing cast. Also, it demonstrates in the first 30 seconds of the pilot that it does not fuck around. You are not prepared. šŸ˜€ And since TLA is on the menu, I feel free to suggest Bebop, which is an anime, and also amazing. Great cast, I really like the mostly episodic nature of the storytelling, incredible soundtrack, and tons of shit for which you are REALLY not prepared.

  47. Ellen says:

    TORCHWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually like Torchwood better than Doctor Who pleasenoonekillme? >.>

  48. rainbowsinside says:

Now I'm gonna go watch an episode. The Blind Bandit to be specific.

But I believe Aang can save the world… BWAAAAH BWAH BWAH BWAH!

  49. MajorWhoaButWhy says:

I'm so excited for you to do Avatar: The Last Airbender! Also, back in the Buzznet days, you had mentioned that you were going to watch A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel. Is that still going to happen?

  50. spectralbovine says:

I cannot wait for you and everyone else here to watch Avatar! It is so amazing, and, yes, you are truly unprepared for how awesome it is.

For anyone who doesn't know about the show, I submit my pimping post from a few years ago. Look, I thought it was a silly Nickelodeon cartoon too. IT IS NOT. IT IS THE BEST. IT IS BETTER THAN A LOT OF LIVE-ACTION SHOWS.

  51. Vicki_Louise says:

Yay! Torchwood! It's a great series. I hope you'll be watching the whole series and not just picking out the best episodes (?), like someone suggested earlier. I don't think you can really judge a show without seeing the very best and the very worst it has to offer. They are a few episodes that i don't like as much as others, but they usually have some great character moments and there's usually some sort of message about the world and human beings in there somewhere.
I could have sworn i'd seen Battlestar Galactica, but having just googled it, i realised it was actually thinking of Stargate! DOH! šŸ™‚
I don't mind any schedule changes, whatever makes it easier for you Mark! I love reading your reviews.

  52. TimeCat says:

Just saying again: Buffy is a must if you haven't seen it. Really. It's had a surprisingly big influence on modern pop culture and the internet in general. TVTropes started with Buffy.

And… have you seen any of the Star Trek series? I ask because, for one, Deep Space 9 was sort of like Ron Moore's first draft for BSG, and for another, Star Trek, like Twilight and Harry Potter, is a huge cultural phenomenon, and it's worth being able to say that you've actually seen it, not just gotten the quotes from pop cultural osmosis.

I must say that I have issues with BSG that keep it from the ranks of FAVORITEST SHOWS EVER (with Doctor Who, Firefly, Buffy, and Babylon 5), so… fun comment party. Most BSG fans seem to be intense about their unconditional love for the show, in my experience.

  53. xpanasonicyouthx says:

What are the Miniseries? Can you explain a bit more? I want to make sure I do it right, like with Doctor Who. just don't spoil! šŸ™‚

    • Morgan says:

basically BSG starts out with a miniseries and it's very important to watch since it basically sets up the whole plot and premise of the show. If I remember correctly it's about 3 hours long (basically like one big epic movie) and then S1 picks up from there. I don't know how you are watching this (on Netflix?) but you should be able to rent it from there. It's its own DVD if that makes sense.

    • notemily says:

The Miniseries is basically the pilot. You want to go Miniseries and then Season 1, etc. Although I think a lot of DVD sets of S1 have the miniseries included.

  54. karate0kat says:

    BATTLSTAR FRAKKING GALACTICA!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

ILU FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER AMEN

  55. Haha, yes. I accidentally started with S1 of BSG and I was so confused that I almost gave up on the show. Which would have been tragic since it's now my favorite show after Buffy šŸ™‚

  56. feminerdist says:

Hello! Long time lurker (from the days of Mark Reads Twilight) and I'm finally commenting! HI!

I love that you are enjoying the whoverse, I love that you loved the firefly universe too! I've actually watched both of these out of order, seeing Serenity first, thinking (holy shit, that was amazing!) and then catching up on Firefly. With Doctor Who, the husband is a fan and I would watch with him and be like "who is that? wait, is that important?" Him: "why don't you start from the beginning?" And then I fell in love, even though I'd seen stuff/spoilers already, I didn't care. And I must say, I'm ECSTATIC about BSG, which I also watched after the original airing, in order, even though I inadvertantly spoiled myself on something major by walking in a room while people were watching. Oops. Bottom line: I tend to spoil things for myself on accident, so I promise to not spoil anything for you. šŸ˜€

  57. jubilantia says:

    AVATAR HELL YEAH

I am so excited. Not just to be able to read your opinions, but also that you are going to be able to watch it. Also perhaps this will make me more likely to finally watch battlestar.

  58. aliens&chocolate says:

    1. I am way too excited for Battlestar! I just finished it, time to begin again!
    2. I know you're overburdened, but when is A Very Potter Musical happening? I'm dying of anticipation!

  59. Lilliana says:

Well, when will you watch Starkid's stuff?
A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel, and Me and My Dick? Plus, Starship is coming out soon, so…

  60. lyvanna says:

Yay for BSG (and eventually Buffy)! I just finished my first BSG rewatch so will be up for another one around the time you start reviewing.

  61. Whitney says:

omg A:TLA -AND- BSG? You totally just made my day, dude. *cartwheels*

  62. laughingasong says:

I agree I want Buffy sooo badly, BUT I'm going to need something new to get into soon cause I only have two seasons of Buffy left šŸ™ and I don't want to start Angel right away. So maybe I'll do BSG, because everyone seems excited about it. Not a big Avatar fan, but you should def watch it if you want to because you should do what YOU WANT šŸ™‚

  63. Maya says:

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA BATTLESTAR GALACTICA BATTLESTAR GALACTICA OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMG.

  64. Hanh says:

You know, I've just been checking up to see when you would finally do a liveblog for AVPM because, not gonna lie, none of the things you've been watching have really interested me, but now you're going to do A:TLA?! Excite!!! Just stay away from the Shamylan(sp?) movie.

  65. Hannah says:

AVATAR is awesome! Just do me a favor, and do NOT watch the movie version. It was not as fun or good as the show! I am so excited!!! You are the best Mark!

  66. GredForge says:

    A Very Potter Musical???

I just think you will find it hilarious, and as they are only two 'episodes', so to speak, you might consider watching them whenever you have time in your schedule, although it sounds as if there is NONE.
You must be so exhausted… D:

  67. Lumosnox says:

    OH WOW… I am excite! :3
Though I really do think that you should watch BBC's Sherlock soon / before you start Avatar / while you are watching Doctor Who, just because 1. It is written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, which leads to 2. It has very much the same feel as Doctor Who, minus the supernatural parts, and 3. It is only 3 episodes long so it won't take much time/effort away from your other projects to view it. šŸ™‚

  68. meredy says:

I really honestly can not in words say how much, just how much this pleases me.

    Really.

Me and my friends general float in the same realms of fandom…. but NONE of my friends watch BSG.

NO ONE DOES. NONE OF THEM.

I literally used to stop people on buses in scifi related shirts and spark conversations, leading to , so you watch Who or BSG? "No, but my friends tell me I should."

    ERG ERG.

    (Forever alone.)

Now that the miniseries is on instant on netflix I've informed my friends they have no choice. THEY will try it. Its for their own good. IF they don't like it, at least I tried.
(But honestly they should know me better, when I go DUDE DUDE DUDEEEE WATCH THIS. It is with reason. BUT this is besides the point.)

I am so excited. SO MUCH.

OH YEAH. Avatar! This too excites me! :'D And just think by the time you finish it, you can watch the new one they are making, hopefully!

    SO MUCH EXCITEMENT.

(I have to remember there is still lots of awesome Who to come and OMG you will watch some Torchwood? YEY.)

I am NOT gonna sit through that crap again. I watched every episode, and it was not worth it. I really like reading your reviews, and I don't want to have to wait for you to go through four seasons before you get back to something interesting. Uhhhhhhhggggggggggg.
