Mark Watches ‘Fringe’: S03E011 – Reciprocity

In the eleventh episode of the third season of Fringe, the Massive Dynamic team works with the Fringe division to determine what on earth they’re supposed to do with the assembled doomsday machine. Meanwhile, someone is killing shapeshifters and the revelation of who that is will make you fall over. The end. Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Fringe.

What an unbelievably exciting episode of television that was. I do love the challenge that writers are forced to work against in the medium, especially being constrained to just over 40 minutes. In “Reciprocity,” we’re given a script that is emotionally, creepy, and ends with a transformative final fifteen minutes, showing us an upsetting new character twist and adding more to the mythology of the First People.

I think the writers are aware of the delicate line they’re on with the Peter/Olivia relationship, and ever since she came back in “Entrada,” they’ve dealt with it in a way that isn’t insulting to us, the viewers, and never fully overshadows anything else on the show. I know a lot of people are losing their shit over the possibility of Fauxlivia being pregnant on the basis of September’s words to Peter in “The Firefly,” but to those naysayers, I submit the last three episodes as proof. It’s proof that this show is able to delicately weave an emotional, dramatic narrative with a heavy dose of experimental physics and a complex mythology. And the only time they went straight for the emotional jugular? We get episodes like “Peter.” AND I AM PERFECTLY ALL RIGHT WITH THAT.

“Reciprocity” deals with two parts of the show’s mythology: the doomsday machine and the shapeshifters. We begin the episode with a focus mostly on the machine, which has now been assembled inside a military hanger somewhere on the east coast. I don’t think any of us were surprised when the machine suddenly came to life when Peter walked into the room. The nosebleed? That was new. And that was creepy.

There’s no real answer given in this episode as to WHY Peter is so special, why the Observers want him alive, and how this ties in to the First People, which finally made a resurrection in the story line last night. But we do know that Walter is experiencing an increase in the terror of realization that he stands to lose his son yet again. There’s nothing irrational about Walter’s feelings during “Reciprocity” and I’m happy that the writers didn’t pursue that idea throughout the story. Walter’s dedication and love for his son may be misguided at times, but I think they’ve abandoned the quirkiness of his behavior. I worried during the first season that the writers would simply continue to make Walter seem like the odd man out, othering him because of his mental illness. But it’s been a beautiful journey to where we are now, where the writers don’t seem to be poking fun at Walter’s behavior and his life. They don’t diminish his mental illness and it’s not the butt of jokes.

Here, now, in this point of the show, Walter just might be the best character on Fringe.

It seems inevitable that the relationship between Peter and Olivia would have to be addressed, but I don’t say that begrudgingly. It’s probably one of the more fascinating character developments I’ve seen on modern television. I mean, I can’t even think of a show that dealt with romance by having a DUPLICATE WOMAN COURT THE MAN THE ORIGINAL WOMAN LOVES. I mean. COME ON. SO AMAZING. And sad. It’s so sad. Oh god, SOOOO SAD.

I feel that throughout “Reciprocity,” we’re getting much closer to Olivia being able to heal and get past what happened in the first half of this season. We got a couple of great moments in this episode (OMG PETER AND OLIVIA TOUCHED HANDS FOR LIKE A SECOND), though I’m worried that these moments of joy are going to be utterly crushed forever and ever in the coming weeks. But for now, it’s nice to appreciate the growth we see.

The murder of shapeshifters in this episode not only pushes the plot forward, but forces an awkward situation: Olivia reading Fauxlivia’s notes on Peter. Peter, in a particularly depressing scene, admitted previously that he was embarrassed that Fauxlivia would say that he was a fool, that she played him despite him being known for being able to con people. (This is a nice way of dealing with that previous plot hole of how Peter never saw that Fauxlivia was…well, fake.)

Watching Olivia read those reports was heartbreaking, especially when we realized that Fauxlivia really wasn’t lying to Peter before she drugged him in “Entrada.” She really was starting to fall for him. So where does that leave Olivia? She decides that maybe it’s time for her to think of how this situation has also affected Peter as well. I think it’s entirely reasonable for her to feel as if her life has been essentially invaded, since it pretty much was, and the past two episodes explored that in subtle ways. For her to give Peter a chance by putting aside her own concerns to tell him that she knows it must hurt for him too is a huge moment for the two characters. IS A PETER/OLIVIA SHIP ON HAND?

Oh, but wait, the rest of this episode goes in an entirely surprising direction, as we shockingly learn that Peter is the one killing shapeshifters. WHAT. WHAT. WHAT!!!! He says that he is killing them in order to gain more information about what the machine is, but Walter’s speech about reciprocity scares me: is it possible that the machine is actually changing him? If we think about it, what Peter does in this episode is absolutely out of character in the context of his past. We’ve never seen him so violent and ruthless. (The scene where Walter walks in on him made me yelp at the television.)

So what the fuck is the doomsday device? Why were the First People so obsessed with it? Why was William Bell also interested in it? I don’t think the Observers are the first people, and one of the writers has publicly stated that we’ve already seen one of the First People in the run of the show. So what does it all mean?

THOUGHTS

  • FUCK YEAH, MORE ASTRID. God, I love her forever. But I wish she would have been the one to crack the code because MORE ASTRID.
  • Did anyone spot the Observer in this episode? I swear I never see him.
  • The cleaver and the fingers. GOOD GOD.
  • Olivia? In a dress and lipstick next week? EXCITE.

I swear one week I will make it to one of the liveblogs (I almost did this week but I had a huge migraine and decided to sleep instead).

I didn't realise how much I liked Brenden until they thought he was the traitor, I was very disappointed in him for those five minutes.

I did not see the reveal of Peter being the killer coming. Him shooting that last shapeshifter in the head was so brutal and really terrifying, although I was slightly distracted by the very tight jeans they'd put him in *coughs*. Nina was right, Peter really does need some help because YIKES, that shot of him looking in the mirror at the end was really creepy.

"The cleaver and the fingers. GOOD GOD."
I had just been thinking how lacking in gore this episode was and then BYE BYE FINGERS OMG.

  2. rowenaravenclaw says:

It was clear that Peter was up to something fishy from the beginning of the episode, but I never saw that reveal coming. I also took "Reciprocity" to mean that faux-livia developing real feelings for Peter might mean he is feeling the same way. ALL THE SADS.

  3. psycicflower says:

I'm glad that we have an official name for fauxlivia, I've been calling her altlivia.

I guessed that it was Peter killing the shapeshifters when they found the first body in the pond since he'd lied to both Walter and Olivia at the start of the episode about where he'd been, I just didn't know why. I was surprised by how ruthless he was though. I mean when that cleaver came down
    <img src="http://i53.tinypic.com/qnwfmx.gif" border="0" alt="Image and video hosting by TinyPic">

I love Walter in this episode, aside from trying to protect his son and his sadface which just gets me everytime, I love his talk with Peter near the end. ‘Why didn’t you tell us?’ Burn. I'm so curious to see what's going to happen with Peter and if the machine is changing him.

I was so happy to see smiling and a bit of banter between Olivia and Peter but then he lied. The whole reading through Fauxlivia's notes was really well done. Peter doesn't want to look bad to Olivia and she just wants to help however she can, regardless of how much that could potentailly hurt her. I just want to hug them both. I do love how Olivia is moving forward and took a moment to say that she understands that it's been hard for Peter too and then ‘We can get past it.’ Just, my heart. I have such a horrible feeling that the show is just going to end up punching me in the gut with these two.

Random question, how do we feel about random theorising here? Yay or nay, obviously no spoilers but I don't know any so that's not a problem.

    • __Jen__ says:

I'm all for random theorising. We did a bit of it on the August review, but idk how Mark feels. Speaking of spoilers, I was linked to a video of "lightning round" questions with the producers and now I am dying. DYING. :O

      • psycicflower says:

I saw that but there was a potential spoiler warning so I skipped right past so I take it I should be very glad I did.
I am such a spoilerphobe for most shows that the only thing I'll watch is the end of episode promo and that's it. I don't even watch the little clips shows tend to release during the week.

        • xpanasonicyouthx says:

I am 100% ok with theorizing. I'll just ask that if you know a spoiler, leave that out for the time being OR put a huge, bolded spoiler warning around it or something.

          So yes, theorize away!!!

I'll start: The man in the bowling alley is one of the First People and we'll see him again before the end of the season.

          • psycicflower says:

I hadn't really thought about any of the First People still being around but with the same book published by different authors in different languages around the same time it does make sense that some still have to be around somewhere.

I wonder if the other universe wants ours to build and use the device, hence Fauxlivia leading them to the pieces and encouraging them to investigate it, because it's using it on our side that will destroy our universe. I mean it looks like we have the whole device here and we only saw one part on the other side.

          • bookling says:

Ooh, interesting. I'd forgotten about him, but he did have an awful lot of ~convenient~ information.

          • NB2000 says:

"I'll start: The man in the bowling alley is one of the First People and we'll see him again before the end of the season."

Sam Weiss. I believe the first time we saw that book about the First People the name of the author was something very similar to his name. I like this theory, mostly because he's awesome and I want him to come back at some point.

            • __Jen__ says:

The author's name was an anagram of Samuel Weiss. His character was so cool and it will be so satisfying if the mysterious hints about him being older than he looks really pay off. 😀

          • __Jen__ says:

I want to meet Lincoln Lee on our side. I recently marathoned S1-2 and a bit that really stuck with me was that Lincoln recognized one of the cortexiphan kids- Nick, I think. With this show, I can't believe that it was just a throwaway line.

            • psycicflower says:

Yes, I'd love to see our Lincoln. It's also interesting that it was expected that Lincoln would have a close relationship with Fauxlivia and automatically know if something was wrong with her. I also wonder how he knew Nick since Walternate didn't seem to know what cortexiphan was before discovering it in Olivia's brain. Unless he had some other kind of trial on children that we don't know about.

          • sdempster1016 says:

This is my thought as well. His name is Sam Weiss and the name Samuel Weiss is an anagram of Seamus Wiles, the author of the book The First People that shows up in the episode 6955 kHz.

I didn't know that the writers said that we've already met one, but the fact that they did only confirms my belief that Bowling Alley Guy is actually one of the First People.

          • ldwy says:

Ah, the bowling alley guy! I like that theory. I actually hadn't heard that we'd already seen a First People (first person?), so I hadn't been thinking of it.

  4. bookling says:

Dude, something is going on with Peter. I'm not sure it's the machine changing him, because that seems too easy. I'm thinking it might be Walter's brain milk from last episode – maybe it made Peter smarter (thus able to figure out Fauxlivia's code) but also inhibited his sense of compassion or empathy? I mean, we knew Peter used to be a con man, and he was sort of cold and matter-of-fact at the beginning of the series, but he's never been like this. I can't believe that Peter has ever been this ruthless before.

So now I wonder whether Olivia will notice that there's something wrong with Peter. It would be interesting if after her "how could you not know she wasn't me?" speech, she didn't recognize that Peter wasn't Peter, either. I mean, if you look back at that episode, they were investigating the doctor's murder, at the scene, and IT WAS REALLY PETER THE WHOLE TIME. Just, oh gee, I don't know how this guy died. QUIT LYING TO OLIVIA, PETER. This is going to ruin Peter/Olivia forever, because she'll never be able to trust him after she finds out about this.

Plus, Walter's now covering for Peter! I don't believe Peter would ever ask Walter to lie for him under normal circumstances, especially not to Olivia. I think Walter is just so scared of losing Peter that he'll do anything Peter wants. And maybe he shouldn't be worried about Peter dying or going back to the other universe – maybe he should be worried about Peter BECOMING someone else. Ugh, poor Walter. I just don't have a good feeling about this.

  5. __Jen__ says:

Oh Peter. And Walter. And Olivia. 🙁

Peter was behaving very suspiciously from the start with his lies to various characters (the photography and pacing helped immensely to set an ominous tone for the episode beyond Peter's out of character behavior). He also had a more serious and focused demeanor, so once multiple shapeshifters were revealed as murdered I suspected that Peter was somehow involved, but not in this manner or with this absolute coldness. With all the discussions of memory and changing one's brain and therefore personalities (Olivia & CHIMPANZEE WALTER!), I was worried that Walternate had done something to Peter 'over there', which was only now manifesting. I think I prefer this idea that the machine is changing him. It will be interesting to watch him struggle with his weaponization (mechanization?) in the upcoming episodes.

I love the thematic ambition of this show. Even from the first season, when it was more focused on Freak of the Week procedural episodes, it was exploring fascinating ideas: humans as machines, emotional and psychological programming, identity, etc. This exploration has only become stronger as they began to ground it in the characters we've become attached to. Watching the actors portray play multiple characters is not only fun to watch, but thought provoking. The Shapeshifters are a fascinating fusion of many of these themes as they are essentially human and machine with fluid identities and the potential essentially be human in the ways that usually matter. This knowledge made Peter's declaration as he killed the last shapeshifter even more chilling. Many of these ideas could come across as ridiculous, but the writers and actors have grounded and performed them so well that it seems natural to ask these questions. This is why I love good sci fi. Through fantastic situations it asks us to explore ourselves.

Walter's character development has been mind-blowingly wonderful. He is treated with respect and sympathy, and John Noble's portrayal has really elevated what could have possibly been a caricature in lesser hands. Someone needs to give this man an Emmy. Wrt this episode, Walter and Peter now share a secret. I'm really intrigued by how this will play out for both of them.

I love Peter and Olivia so much. Their relationship developed in such a natural manner. There wasn't a lot of will they/won't they tensions that is often found in procedurals (I'm looking at you, Bones), but rather a friendship that gradually became more. As much as I'd rather not have a pregnancy development, because I really don't want see all these characters suffer more (even Fauxlivia whose potential character development really thrills me), I do trust the writers to take the story wherever they want to go.

I LOVE THE FIRST PEOPLE IDEA. It has so much potential to be so cool. Also, William Bell has been name dropped a lot more recently. Maybe they'll find some way to involve his character again? If this show doesn't get another season to explore all of these storylines, I will be devastated. 🙁

    • psycicflower says:

I totally agree with what you say about the Shapeshifters. Peter saying that shapeshifters don't really count because they aren't human was really interesting in that context, especially when you think back to that shifter in 'Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?' who clearly made a deep connection with that family and wanted to stay with them.

I also love how natural the development of Olivia and Peter's relationship has been. I definitely agree that will they/won't they relationships that get dragged out for too long with too many conveniently timed obstacles can get very old. *side eyes Bones*

      • Julia says:

Bones- oh how I HATE THAT ABOUT YOU!!
I totally argee about John Noble. I WOULD GIVE HIM ALL THE AWARDS for sheer brilliance. He lets you know that he is not quite off without the audience disconnecting from him during emotionally charged moments.
Bell sort of annoys me. He seems to be a convient excuse for making new technology. Oh my new arm? Bell built it. Brain restoring stuff, Bell built it. Implausible machine that defeats a plot-hole, Bell INVENTED IT!

  6. astridaction says:

I also love the relationship between Olivia and Peter, and I have to say I really hope Peter isn't developing feelings for fauxlivia. I would think anything he felt for her being a more happy person or whatever would be counterbalanced by the fact she killed a mother with the other shapeshifter en route during her escape attempt! Maybe it's just that I am a daughter with a close relationship with my mom but the daughter screaming for her mother which is now a shapeshifter was heartbreaking and made me absolutely loathe fauxlivia. Olivia would never be that brutal with a total innocent for her personal gain, and even mechanized Peter was still killing enemies/assassins, not random bystanders.

  7. dcjensen says:

If Sam Weiss really is one of the First People, I wonder how he endured the millennial without anyone else, or if the others were around and he is just but one.

OTOH? Hibernation or time travel or…

  8. sdempster1016 says:

Am I the only person who isn't freaking the fuck out over Fauxlivia possibly being pregnant with Peter's child? If it is true, I think it has to potential to really shift some loyalties. Since we see that Fauxlivia was clearly developing some feelings for Peter, not to mention that she actually likes Walter too, and just generally was getting to know the people on the other side as actual people with personalities instead of them being a faceless Enemy I don't think she will just let Walternate attempt to destroy the our universe to save hers. Our Olivia wouldn't and neither would Fauxlivia I think. She'd probably be willing to try and find a way to save both, just like Olivia and our team wants to.

And so, I think her being pregnant with Peter's baby has the potential to cause her to switch sides, or at least oppose Walternate. And once she does that, I think that Lincoln and Alt-Charlie and possibly other members of the Other Fringe Division will join her, especially if they find out about Broyles.

    Just my $0.02.

    • __Jen__ says:

I love the potential for her switching sides and pulling the others with her over this. How cool would it be to see her teaming up with Olivia to fight for both universes? :DDD My main problem with the possible pregnancy is just that I ship Peter and Olivia and want them to be happy with each other. Peter being the father of Fauxlivia's child would have to throw some sort of wrench into the situtation.

  9. rowenaravenclaw says:

I have to say there are a lot of plot holes in this episode that are hard for me to get past, even after a second watch. Mainly, how did Peter break Faux-livia's "olive" code, especially within the few hours from the first encounter with the doomsday machine and when he snuck out to kill Michael Baird, which seemed to be early the next morning when he comes home (wearing leather gloves, DUN DUN DUN) and makes a sandwich with Walter. Could he have really stolen Faux-livia's files, broken the code, and decided to go after the shape shifters in a few hours? Maybe this is just crappy timing, but maybe Peter had already figured out who the shape shifters were before the machine gave him a time-traveling-LOST nosebleed, and the machine's "weaponization" just caused him to take action?
Also, I don't see how he had time to kill Dr. Falcon. He was at the location of the doomsday machine the entire time it seems, yet he managed to leave the middle of nowhere location, kill the guy, and then get back in time before the others even suspect the doc? This episode was just more sloppy with these things than usual.
The end of the episode was particularly ominous, the way they fade from Peter looking darkly into the mirror to the doomsday machine, but they seem to almost bleed together. I'm really excited to see how far this goes with Peter, and I'm glad we're finally getting to focus more on his character.

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

This is just a guess, and not an answer, but I think the machine actually enabled him to crack the code and to do what he did. It's just an idea, but what if Walternate has far more to do with the machine than we realize? The machine changed Peter enough so that he would justify murder. Maybe it changed the way his brain works too.

      • rowenaravenclaw says:

That is definitely a legit theory, I also considered it could involve the brain mapping milk Peter drank. I sound very negative above so let me clarify; the writers of fringe are probably some of the best in television currently IMO. I rarely come away from fringe with that feeling, but I felt the small mistakes in plot and further dramaticized cliff hangers before every commercial break just felt more cheesy and ridiculous than usual.
More on what Mark said, I think Walternate sent Fauxlivia to at least help convince our side to build the machine. Maybe it has to exist in the universe Walternate is trying to destroy. That's why scary Peter is so scary, it's up to him to try to save both worlds! We need Peter to be in his right mind now more than ever.

  10. Hotaru-hime says:

    More Astrid, more William Bell.
I don't have anything constructive to add or anything new, other than this is exciting and I just love being along for the ride.

  11. Julia says:

GAWD nooooo! PETER!!!!! I think Peter and Oliva will get in a relationship, he will go all crazy (b/c of the machine) and she'll have to restrain him or something.
Also the machine is making Peter MOAR MACHINE-LIKE! It needs him to be ruthless and uncaring in order to use the machine to destroy one of the two worlds (or both or neither or himself or his exsistence). Perhaps Peter will sacrafice himself in order to save Oliva and her world, but what about Faulivia and his possible child?
Perhaps the observers are the first people? They don't act, view time, or look like (no hair- possibly not mammals?) normals people.
I love this show so much! I even have a FRINGE DANCE! I smile run around in a circle, act confused, jump up and down, then squee and repete.
Also my predictions are pretty much never going to happen because this show is just too original for me. 🙂 I love it when that happens! There is nothing worse than when I can predict a show.

    • Julia says:

AND ALSO how will the peter walter relationship change after they share an ENORMOUS SECRET? Normally walter keeps the secrets and peter reacts. Will peter have more respect for his father? YAY 3-d CHARACTERS!
ALSO ALSO ALSO Did Walter change because of the machine? Think about it. He was good(-ish), then he became terrifyingly evil. Walternate is a completely changed verison of Water and is beyond evil. What started that change? Could it be a gene? Is the gene from the first people? Will it be passed down to the possible child of Peter and Fauxlivia? Do the other first people hide because they don't want to be changed?

  12. Here, now, in this point of the show, Walter just might be the best character on Fringe.
    You mean he wasn't always?

It’s probably one of the more fascinating character developments I’ve seen on modern television. I mean, I can’t even think of a show that dealt with romance by having a DUPLICATE WOMAN COURT THE MAN THE ORIGINAL WOMAN LOVES. I mean. COME ON. SO AMAZING. And sad. It’s so sad. Oh god, SOOOO SAD.
I can think of one other show that did something similar, but even it didn't linger this much on the fallout. I love how realistically they're treating it. You rarely see the true aftermath that occurs when a shapeshifter takes over your life for a period of time and you try to step back into it. (Now that I think about it, that's largely because in most cases, you're dead.)

(The scene where Walter walks in on him made me yelp at the television.)
Did you think he might shoot him? DID YOU THINK HE MIGHT SHOOT HIM? BECAUSE THE THOUGHT FLEETINGLY OCCURRED TO ME.

The cleaver and the fingers. GOOD GOD.
    SERIOUSLY.

  13. Rachel says:

I think Walter is right about reciprocity, and Peter is being desensitized because of the machine. But I think if something highly emotional happens to him (Olivia and him getting together?) the same principle of reciprocity will bring him back. I can't see the writers ruining the sincereity of Peter forever (because I'm selfish and want the old Peter back). The parallelism of his ruthless killing of shape-shifters because they are machines to the fact that he is part of a machine too just killed me. I predict some serious internal struggles and self-loathing in the coming episodes as Peter finds out more about the dooms day machine, similar to Olivia's struggle with remembering who she really was on the other side, culminating in a moment (a plateau perhaps?) where he'll either permanently become the machine or Olivia and Walter snap him out of it.

  14. jennreyn says:

I'm pretty sure soap operas have dealt with the whole 'duplicate courting the man the original loves' thing but with like, evil twins/random impostors/something totally random and awful and not worth a second thought, but YES. THIS SHOW IS SO FABULOUS ABOUT IT.

Also, and I really hope I am not jinxing the show with this, but IF the worst happens and it gets cancelled (DO NOT GET CANCELLED FRINGE I NEED MORE OF YOU IN MY LIFE) I really hope the writers go all "fuck it" and actually destroy both universes in the finale. In the most horrible way possible.

ALSO ALSO I know I cannot be the only one who thinks that Fauxlivia's password was Never Gonna Give You Up. Walter said she ruined YouTube for all of them, is that because SHE TOTALLY RICKROLLED THEM?

    • Leelee says:

Walter said she ruined U2 for them, since that was what her password was. Going back to the Bono/U2 ticket references in the Fauxlivia/Peter relationship.

  15. jennreyn says:

I had the same reaction when Peter said that. But what if they actually aren't human? That makes it a little less icky, but is seriously blurred by what we saw earlier this season with the way the shapeshifters reacted to the family members of the people they shifted into. At the very least it paves the way for a discussion of what it is to be human (which has been done, but I have faith that Fringe could do it without rehashing everything that's already been said).

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

I don't know how I feel about it. They really aren't human, but we've seen them ascribe to try to be them. But we've also seen them as ruthless soldiers.

      I relaly don't know.

      • Hermione Rigby says:

They aren't human by our universe's definition; however, they have shown some human characteristics, such as forming attachments. We've also seen human beings throughout history as ruthless soldiers as well, within and without Fringe, and particularly in this episode with Peter's behavior.

Whether or not they are human by definition, biology, etc, they have shown those traits that make humans human, and by not recognizing that, we're on a slippery slope, such as, again, in HP, when we look at how the house elves are treated…they are a means to an end for human beings, yet they should be treated with more dignity than they are. If anything else, the shapeshifters deserve to be looked at with a certain amount of respect and deserve a world of study. Plus, should the singularity come, I'd like to be viewed as sympathetic, ifyouknowwhatimean hahaha.
