Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’

Ok, we certainly need to talk about this, right?

It’s happening after Firefly. (Well, first we have to have a stupendous liveblog of Serenity, so after that. Which…holy shit, that is so soon.) I have been saying it on Twitter and Tumblr in bits and pieces, but you deserve a full announcement AND I need some help from all you TARDIS-loving fans.

Here is how Mark Watches Doctor Who is going to go down:

  • For the sake of availability, I am starting with the NINTH DOCTOR, which is the beginning of the revival of the series. I AM 100% AWARE THAT THERE ARE 8,000 YEARS OF THE SHOW BEFORE THIS.
  • Because I am interested in past seasons and because I am also hoping some of the newer fans can watch older episodes, WE WILL BE WATCHING/REVIEWING OLDER EPISODES OF THE SHOW.
  • I have not yet figured out the process, but I would like to watch one “older” episode per week, chosen by the community via a voting/nomination process.

That’s where you guys come in. This site is WordPress-based. I am interested in any sort of plugins that can handle voting, nomination, or polling. RECOMMEND AWAY. What do you think will work best?

Expanding on that, what’s the most efficient way for us to “nominate” episodes? Should I just have a free-for-all post where people suggest the name of the episode I should watch, and then I create a poll for the top 10 or something? I’m worried about the masses overwhelming me and other suggesters as well, especially if there’s a particularly amazing episode that not many people have seen.)

Anyway, there’s that. This is really happening and VERY VERY VERY SOON. I imagine we’ll do the liveblog for Serenity next weekend and I’ll start Doctor Who right after that! OH MY GOD THAT IS SO SOON.

Discuss! AND DON’T FUCKING SPOIL ME ABOUT ANYTHING REGARDING THIS SHOW BECAUSE I LITERALLY KNOW LIKE 0.000001% ABOUT IT.

The "New Who" (i.e. the 2000s onwards) often have stories lasting a single episode, and so it's possible to pick out single eps without too much trouble. However, Classic Who, was in stories that usually ran across 4 or 6 or even more episodes – so a single ep will often make no sense.

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

I'll be doing arcs instead just to cover the full story.

      • pica_scribit says:

The old show also had half hour episodes, where the new show has hour-long one, so a four-episode arc doesn't actually take that long to watch.

  2. Tasneemoo says:

OH and it may seem childish, but Sarah Jane Adventures is pretty awesome too! there's an episode with David Tennant!Dr. Who in it 🙂 AND IT WAS AMAZING!

  3. lizvelrene says:

I am commenting for the very first time to say OMG YESSSSS NEWWHO I CANNOT WAIT.

(Now that I'm here – You got me into Harry Potter. Thanks.)

  4. arctic_hare says:

I am so so freaking excited for this, I can't even describe it. ♥ YOU ARE SO NOT PREPARED FOR CERTAIN EPISODES. I mean, I am interested in your thoughts on each one, but there are certain ones I really really can't wait to see reviews of. SO EXCITING.

If it's okay to do so, I'd also like to offer a suggestion for a future Watches project: Pushing Daisies. It's only got two seasons, and they were short seasons at that. Quite unfortunate, yes, but the quality there was through the roof (shall never forgive ABC that cancellation). It's candy-colored on the outside, with darkness lurking just beneath, and so many awesome characters and delicious humor and amazingly touching and sad bits and and and it's just WONDERFUL, OKAY? XD; And I'm rambling. TL;DR I rec Pushing Daisies for a future "Mark Watches".

    • fakehepburn says:

YES OMG MARK NEEDS TO WATCH "PUSHING DAISIES"!

Brief synopsis: It's like if Dr. Seuss and Tim Burton made a version of CSI.

      RECOMMEND FOREVER!!!

  5. Kiwi says:

Yay! This counts as my best news for the day. You're doing all the episodes from the ninth doctor onwards, right? I haven't watched much of the old stuff other than the very first couple of episodes.

BUT YES DOCTOR WHO IS AWESOME! <3

  6. Aimee says:

    ;ASKDF;A I'M SO EXCITED OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD A;SKDFJA;

  7. Aimee says:

IS there any part of my life that is holy or sacred to you, Mark? First Harry Potter, then Hunger Games, Firefly, and now this!

  8. Ingeborg says:

I HAVE PROBABLY NEVER BEEN THIS EXCITED IN MY LIFE.
    !!!!!!11!!!oneone!!

  9. Opportunemoment says:

I heard this revelation on Made of Fail, listening on my commute, and very nearly did a little chair dance on the tube. SO EXCITE. I may have to actually watch along. I haven't seen nearly enough old!Who, but I'm looking forward to the reviews anyway!

CANNOT wait to watch these again and see the reactions to some episodes

  12. ScarfPerson says:

[delurks] I can't wait for you to watch Doctor Who! This is going to feel like watching it for the first time again! Ah, Nine. You never forget your first doctor, and he was mine. 🙂

All the classic DW episodes I have seen are on Dailymotion. In fact, most (if not all) of Classic Who is there for anyone who doesn't have the budget for the extremely expensive DVDs. [/lurks again]

  13. ScarfPerson says:

    [re-delurks]
Actually, I just went back on the site I just mentioned and they're trying to stay on the down-low especially right now.

If I could delete comments like mine above, I would. However, this is why I still consider myself an internet n00b and this is why I lurk all the time. I can't delete it.

*curls up into a guilty ball and never comes out* [/re-lurks for possibly forever]

  14. Internet User 027 says:

HOW DID I JUST SEE THIS.
the first old series anything you must watch is "the five doctors".
    don't argue with me.
i have a picture of jon pertwee kissing a turtle YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ARGUE WITH ME.

  15. Tasneemoo says:

Oooh Ecclestone 🙂 not as good as Tennant, but watching the episodes back, he was more awesome that I thought he was! It's just Tennant has done more episodes. Tennants hair = sex on legs.

  16. Rose Brazeale says:

I know many people who will be absolutely ecstatic about this. But only one of them knows of the existence of this blog. I must remedy this.

  17. Liz says:

YES! I just watched all of Doctor Who as well! I'm so excited to hear your thoughts!

  18. I just realized I could have been commenting all this time but I hadn't, which makes my life UTTERLY TRAGIC!

I'm so elated that you're watching Doctor Who, which is only the best scifi ever! Oh Mark, you are not prepared!

  19. Elfy says:

I’d suggest you begin with An Unearthly Child when you’re watching the classic episodes. That’s the very first one. I first got into Dr Who midway through Tom Baker’s reign as the 4th doctor, I also watched Peter Davison as the 5th doctor, but kind of missed out on 6 and 7, then got back into it with 9 and ‘New Who’. My wife is a huge fan and is a walking encyclopedia of the show when it comes to the classic episodes. She’s pretty good on New Who, but doesn’t have quite the same depth of knowledge. It’s an interesting contrast to see how William Hartnell (the 1st doctor) played the role at the start and then compare it to Christopher Ecclestone, David Tennant and now Matt Smith.

  20. justapalindrome says:

Mark, I have been following your reviews ever since Twilight (the 1st book) and never signed up to comment, but this news is so awesome that I felt compelled. THIS SHOW IS AMAZING AND YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!! I am so excited for you to experience the awesomeness that is Doctor Who!

  21. Meg says:

MARK YOU HAVE MADE MY ENTIRE YEAR. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER, ASIDE FROM WEDDINGS AND BABIES AND PUPPIES AND KITTIES.

  22. Laura says:

SO EXCITED. I mean, I've made an account her just for this (although, your reviews of Hunger Games and Harry Re-read convinced me a good deal. Plus, you're doing Avatar after this. That's like,4 of my major fandoms!)

Of course, I'm still trying to work out why I can't post comments with my account….*pokes computer*

  23. Starsea28 says:

    Oh my God.

Mark, I am so excited because DW is awesome. And as a Briton, I can proudly proclaim that it's in my cultural blood.

  24. Owlie says:

OH MAN we are so excited for this to be your new most favorite thing ever!! This is Harry potter level of awesome, which is to say, we think you'll like it as much as you liked hp!

  25. Lauren says:

Hope you like it. I started with the new series, and became totally obsessed. Some people have mentioned this before – the classic stories are a minimum of 4 episodes of 25 minutes each, so you might want to take that into consideration.
As for suggestions, I think you should watch an least the first episode, if not the entire first story – "An Unearthly Child" – and compare it to the first episode of the new series.

  26. jennywildcat says:

Oh my gosh – Mark, I am SO STINKING EXCITED FOR YOU!! I've been reading your "Mark Reads" blog for a few weeks without commenting (everything I'd want to say was already covered by others), but I must chime in about the TOTAL AND COMPLETE WONDERFUL-NESS THAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO EXPERIENCE WITH DOCTOR WHO!! When you mentioned in your review of "Hermione's Secret" from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban that you liked stories with a time-travel element in them, I honestly wondered if you had seen Doctor Who.

I started watching Doctor Who back in June at the recommendation of a few friends – I started with Nine and watched all of the new series in about a month and I was hooked! I've started watching the old series a bit. I've seen most of the First Doctor (the beginning is pretty good, but it get boring toward the end) some of the Second and Third and most of the Fifth (why I've skipped Four is still a mystery to me, but I'll get to it) and the TV movie with Eight. So far, the Fifth Doctor is my favorite (my personal faves are "Castrovalva," "Kinda" and "Arc of Infinity"), but I do agree with the sentiment that the TV movie must be seen.

  27. xkcdhobbes says:

Mark Watches Doctor Who…your brain will explode, the Doctor will repair it, it will explode again, and so forth ad infinitum. There is no possible way to be prepared for Doctor Who, and there is (in my opinion) no possible way to dislike it. My advice to you: you better lock-up your sanity, because if it's not entirely secure, you'll lose it from so much awesomeness!
Good Luck, and enjoy the ride! 🙂
