In the sixteenth episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena, I just watched someone turn into a cow. Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Utena.
what the fuck
- what the fuck
- what the fuck!!!!!
- WHAT DID I JUST EXPERIENCE
- Actually, let’s be honest with ourselves: this is a twenty-minute set up to a Christian Dior pun, isn’t it? That makes this totally worth it.
- I’m guessing that this is the “Curried High Trip” for this story arc because…. well, did you watch “The Cowbell of Happiness”? This clearly isn’t going to have any bearing on future storylines. It’s an absurd and ridiculously humorous one-off that explores Nanami’s sense of jealousy and her determination to be the center of attention. She achieves this by wearing a mysterious Sebastian Dior necklace that’s actually just a cowbell.
- Which she wears
- CONSTANTLY
- Because she believes that the speechless students and staff are awed by her sense of fashion.
- This is the actual plot of this episode until the second half, where Nanami literally becomes a cow.
- I can’t even exaggerate how bizarre this is.
- I suppose it’s possible that there is something here that’s meaningful? I did like the message that the Shadow Play Girls imparted: You reap what you sow. That seems like an important theme for Utena, but how on earth am I supposed to take this seriously when NANAMI LITERALLY TRANSFORMS INTO A COW
- COMPLETE WITH BLONDE HAIR, MIND YOU.
- I don’t hate this episode, not by a longshot. It’s hilarious, it’s so completely fucking weird that it clearly doesn’t care that it’s wierd, and Anthy is MY FAVORITE. She just knits the whole time because she can’t be bothered by Nanami’s cow shenanigans.
- COWSTIAN DIOR
- WORTH THE WHOLE EPISODE.
- Otherwise? I have no idea how to write about this. Are we going to see Juri in a future storyline involving her modeling? Or does any of this matter in the long run?
- SHE TURNED INTO A COW.
