Mark Watches ‘Supernatural’: S07E16 – Out with the Old

In the sixteenth episode of the seventh season of Supernatural, a set of cursed objects leads Sam and Dean to a lead on the Leviathan front. Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Supernatural.

Trigger Warning: For body horror, gore.

WELL, THAT WAS UNEXPECTED.

Honesty

Right off the bat, this episode surprised me: Sam is openly admitting that he’s seeing Lucifer constantly, and Dean’s being supportive, and I WAS SO UTTERLY WRONG ABOUT MY PREDICTION. I honestly thought that we’d see the same patterns emerge that we’ve seen over the course of this show, BUT NO. Holy shit, Sam tells Dean exactly what’s happening, they have a conversation about it and Dean tries to help, and is this really happening? I almost don’t recognize these characters or this show. Does that mean these two have learned that honesty might actually be the best policy? IS THIS GROWTH?

What his this show become?

Cursed

I suspected that something was up when Sam and Dean appeared to have tracked down all of the cursed items and only 18 minutes had passed. IT SEEMED SO WRONG. And while I was right about that one little thing, I must admit that I thought the idea of an antique store unknowingly selling horrifically cursed items was REALLY ENTERTAINING. Scott wasn’t being manipulative or evil here; he just needed to sell off all of his mother’s stuff before his lease was up. HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT HE’D DONE. He’s such a unique character within the Supernatural universe specifically because he’s so clueless all the time. God, y’all, he had a WEIRD DAY here as well. Could you imagine being introduced to cursed objects on the same day you find out that creatures like the Leviathans exist? I can’t. Poor guy! At least he survived, though.

Leviathans

I do love that there’s a mythology story hidden within “Out with the Old,” especially since it has long-lasting ramifications for the future. But beyond that, there are a lot of interesting things the writers chose to do here. Namely?

Joyce and George. What the fuck?

I definitely thought it was strange that we focused so much on their relationship, especially given that they didn’t seem all that high up in the Leviathan hierarchy. Their dynamic was also strange because how is that Leviathan so reluctant and nervous? George initially made absolutely no sense to me. Here’s a creature within a human’s body who possesses a ridiculous amount of power, namely in that he’s largely invulnerable. And yet? He’s completely subservient to Joyce. I mostly thought that this was a result of this unspoken Leviathan hierarchy, and I don’t see any reason to disbelieve this. As far as I could tell, Joyce was higher on the ladder than he was, and she openly took advantage of that. She was difficult with him purely for the sake of it, and I even got the sense that she was used to this sort of treatment. And if you look at Dick Roman’s behavior, you can see why some of the Leviathans might act as they do.

But this wasn’t just worldbuilding; Joyce had to treat George poorly so that we’d get that shocker at the end of the episode. Y’all, I was so flabbergasted when George told Sam exactly where a bucket of borox and water was. YOU… YOU ARE ACTUALLY HELPING. LEGITIMATELY HELPING. I DON’T UNDERSTAND. WHY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Then, George points out a sword that Sam eventually uses to behead Joyce, and I WAS SO LOST. How? How was this actually happening on the screen?

I assume, then, that George is spared at the end of “Out with the Old.” We don’t see him die onscreen, and it’s hinted that the Winchesters not only let him live, but gave him Joyce’s head so he could eat it. All of this done… as a thank you? I’m not so sure about this, mostly because I don’t believe George. I don’t believe what he finally reveals to Sam and Dean: that the Leviathans are planning a research center for that block in Portland so they can cure cancer. It’s blatantly absurd because there’s no reason for me to believe that the Leviathans could possibly do a good thing for humanity. On top of that, I still don’t understand why they’re so committed to doing everything as legally as possible. So that they can remain undetected? Fine, okay, but… curing cancer??? That doesn’t fit at all, and I think George was pulling their chain. This has to be the case! Fuck, I’m probably wrong, but I don’t get it. I don’t understand how doing something this genuinely good is part of their plans.

LET ME REMIND YOU THAT IT VERY MUCH APPEARS THAT THE LEVIATHANS GOT TO FRANK DEVEREAUX. Even if he’s still alive and it’s all a ruse, it’s not like it’s beyond the realm of possibility. These creatures are so evil THEY HAD TO BE LOCKED INTO A PLACE SEPARATE FROM HELL. Just… do I need to say anymore?

I’ve probably made a fool of myself, but oh well.

Supernatural: Everything Sam Winchester Does Breaks My Heart

While it’s really refreshing that Sam and Dean are able to be honest with another, I’m still perpetually full of emotion for this goddamn moose. He’s not sleeping because of his hallucinations. That’s intentional, too, since he’s drinking as much caffeine as possible to stay awake. What is he seeing in his dreams? Wouldn’t he want to fall asleep if Lucifer was present in his every waking moment? This suggests that something else is happening here, and lord, it’s too much to deal with.

Save Same Winchester From Supernatural 2014. (I’m sure this is pointless.)
