Mark’s Predictions for Season 3 of ‘Avatar’

I hadn’t done this in a while and it’s high time I devoted a post solely to this ridiculous process of mine so everyone who reads this site can squirm and giggle at my predictions. So buckle in, Watchers, because it’s time to determine if my predictions for season two came true and for me to make a fool of myself yet again for season three of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

So let’s start off with last season’s predictions and see how many I got right!

  1. All right, let’s start out with the easy stuff. In season two, Katara is going to be confused about her feelings for both Aang and a second person we have not met yet. WRONG, but only because I added that second part. She was totally angsting. WAIT. AANGSTING. Fuck, I am a genius.
  2. Jet will reappear in season two. SOMEONE GIVE ME A REWARD.
  3. Aang will be trained by an earth bending master we have NOT met yet. HELL YES. Oh, Toph, I am so glad that you are on this show.
  4. Sokka will be reluctant to feel romance to[wards] someone else after the loss of Princess Yue. IT’S LIKE I WROTE THIS WHOLE SECOND SEASON MYSELF.
  5. We will see a story about Appa? Look, I don’t know what they could tell BUT LET A BOY DREAM. AND A BOY’S DREAM CAME TRUE oh my god
  6. HELL, LET US HAVE AN EPISODE DEVOTED TO MOMO, TOO. Well, we got one segment of “Tales of Ba Sing Se,” but that doesn’t quite satisfy this. booooo.
  7. If we’re talking about flashbacks, I think we’ll get one about Sokka’s/Katara’s family. NOPE. We didn’t get much Hakoda at all. moar plz?
  8. This is becoming less of a prediction list and more of a wish list, because now I want to see Uncle Iroh in a flashback as well. OH MY GOD SADDEST FLASHBACK OF ALL TIME. why did I wish for this.
  9. We will meet Aang’s earth bending master BEFORE the halfway mark of the season. (I think that’s episode ten? Unless there are more episodes this season.) I AM A MASTER.
  10. We will see much, much more of Zuko’s unnamed sister. OH GOD AZULA. NEVER HAVE I FELT SO CONFLICTED ABOUT A CHARACTER IN MY WHOLE LIFE.
  11. All right, let’s get to the REAL SHIT. I predict that Aang will go into the Avatar state before the halfway mark of the season. lol FIRST EPISODE LOL
  12. Aang will master both water bending and earth bending by the time we get to the end of season two. SHIT YEAH.
  13. We will find out something more about what Ba Sing Se is. I don’t want to say too much because that might be something for season three, but it is an Earth Kingdom town, so why not in Book Two? I SAY YES. WELL. YOU FOUND OUT SOMETHING ABOUT IT, DIDN’T YOU.
  14. Zuko’s sister will be the only main character to die in season two. OH MARK. YOU WERE SO ~PRECIOUS~ BACK THEN.
  15. Fire Lord Ozai will speak to Aang himself. They’re really saving him for season three, aren’t they?
  16. I predict that Team Avatar will gain FIVE more people on their side. They won’t necessarily travel with them the whole time, but I think it’s time for the Team to get more members! Ok, so here’s the hard part. I have to count this. Toph is #1. Iroh is #2. Zuko is #3 in “The Chase”. Can I count Smellerbee, Jet, and Longshot from “Lake Laogai”? Ok, I am. #4, #5, #6. Shit, that’s six. Well, this is good! But it doesn’t count for me.
  17. And my big prediction for season two: Uncle Iroh and Prince Zuko will be two of those new “team” members. LOOK I KNOW I MAKE JOKES ABOUT PUPPY DOGS AND CUPCAKES but I really want them all to be on the same side ok gosh stop judging me. Sorry, counting “The Chase” and “The Crossroads of Destiny” for Iroh, but I think, technically, Zuko doesn’t count for this because of his final turn at the end of “The Crossroads of Destiny.”

Ok, so that is 10 out of 17. Not bad, I suppose! Seriously, now I can see why this was so painful for some of you to read. My predictions were ridiculous.

AND NOW ON TO SEE HOW FOOLISH I CAN BE IN A FEW HUNDRED WORDS

MARK’S TOTALLY ACCURATE AND WISE PREDICTIONS FOR SEASON THREE

  1. Aang will not master fire bending until at least the halfway mark of the season.
  2. Sokka will re-visit his father.
  3. We will not see the Freedom Fighters again. 🙁
  4. Katara will use her healing powers four times over the course of the season.
  5. Aang will enter the Avatar State by episode three.
  6. Aang will speak with past Avatars that are NOT Avatar Roku.
  7. Team Avatar will rescue Uncle Iroh from the Fire Nation.
  8. Team Avatar will still attempt some sort of invasion or infiltration on the day of the solar eclipse.
  9. Aang will be consumed with massive guilt in the season three opener for having lost the battle at Ba Sing Se.
  10. Momo will be captured at least once in season three.
  11. And let’s now turn towards the serious: Azula will be double-crossed by Ty Lee after Ty Lee witnesses Azula doing something that disappoints her or breaks her heart. (WHAT. I THINK IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING STORY TO PURSUE.)
  12. Uncle Iroh will die by the end of season three. 🙁 I predicted long ago, in my first review, that he would be the first character to die, and I was thankfully wrong. But after the death of Jet and that harrowing finale, I kind of feel like there’s nothing protecting him at this point and part of me thinks it might spur Zuko to finally turn against the Fire Nation.
  13. Oh, right, about that: Zuko will fully come over to Team Avatar by the time the finally rolls around. THERE I SAID.
  14. Zuko will return to the Fire Nation and his father will not accept him back. Remember: Azula always lies.
  15. Aang will visit the Spirit World twice.
  16. Toph will discover an earth bender who might be better than she is.
  17. Ok, DRAMA TIME. I don’t know how this might actually work, but Katara and Aang will end up together. Maybe in the sense that they finally reveal how they both feel about one another and it’s all cute and whatnot.
  18. Sokka will finally let his guard down and give himself over to Suki.
  19. The Kyoshi Warriors will play heavily into the series finale.
  20. Aang will battle Fire Lord Ozai himself ONLY during the series finale and it will be on the day that Sozin’s Comet passes by.
  21. Aang will defeat Fire Lord Ozai and “save the world,” but in the process, he’ll harm someone close to him.
  22. The show will end with an image mirroring something we saw in the very first episode.

Wow, typing those last few…..this show is going to be over soon. That is depressing.

Also, I’ve already decided this: We are going to do a massive liveblog to watch the 90+ minute series finale. There are basically sixteen episodes left, so that will give us three weeks to handle all the eps before the finale by July 8th. On July 9th (a Saturday), we’ll hold the liveblog for the finale and my brain will explode and I’ll cry for a thousand hours. And then, on Sunday, July 10th, we will host a liveblog that is the polar opposite for everything as I attempt to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. Yes. The movie. The only way I can survive is with YOUR HELP. So let’s all support me through this rough time.

This is both exciting and really sad. I love this show. 🙁

  1. Kraznit says:

I don't really understand why you're conflicted about Azula. She's a complete monster. There are no redeeming traits about her at all. Where's the conflict?

    • Avit says:

      She's a human being.

    • alexamarie0813 says:

      she's just SO FIERCE.

    • Anne says:

She's smart, genre savvy, and ruthless. AND she's only 15. Azula's evil, but rather impressive as well.

      • chichichimaera says:

        14, I thought.

      • shoroko says:

All of this. There are honestly ways in which I wish I was more like Azula. Except without the evil. That the show created a character like that, a character who is interesting and engaging and even impressive while also being consistently villainous thus far, is pretty fantastic.

        • Bay Area Food Blog says:

In a way, the characterizations of Azula and the dangerous ladies are reflective of the characterizations of the Fire Nation. We aren't supposed to like the Fire Nation for perpetuating genocide but damn if they aren't comfortable with having women in leadership and combat roles. This is in direct contrast to the Water tribes where women are EXPLICITLY relegated to the sidelines and the Earth Kingdom where Toph seems to be only female bender around. Could it be that the Fire Nation's military superiority might have something to do with recognizing the combat abilities of its women?

    • Dan says:

She's fascinating, and pretty badass, I think. Cruel, yes, but SUCH an interesting, cunning character, with boss fighting skills.

    • RJM says:

I don't think she's a complete monster. She's just really, really, REALLY fucked in the head. Now, Ozai on the other hand…

    • Embies says:

She's a victim of Ozai as much as Zuko is, just in a different way.

      • @Ahavah22 says:

Exactly. Remember, her mother disappeared, too! Her father's been manipulating her for her entire life, and she's still just a kid. She probably never had unconditional love in her entire life. Every bit of approval she got, she got because of her talent and status. And her mother did not appreciate her myriad "talents" as much as her father did (being manipulative and war-mongering). That kind of put her between her parents' opinions and expectations of her.

Plus she's deliciously badass and smart!

        • FlameRaven says:

Exactly. Azula has always been unusually skilled, but she's also had the lesson drilled in that anything less than perfection is unacceptable. And she's seen how easily Zuko was tossed aside when he failed Ozai– I could easily see Azula learning from that that unless she's perfect, she'll be rejected too.

I suspect that Azula could have turned out more like Zuko if she'd actually been allowed to learn empathy, but it seems at the age where she might have started to learn that (around 7 or 8 years old) her mother disappeared, and it's not like Ozai was going to bother with things like that. :/

      • TheWelshPirate says:

Agreed. Azula is a monster, but she's a monster who was lovingly sculpted by the Devil.

    • She's strong and charismatic and gorgeous and we're only human, okay ;_;

    • Candy says:

Look up the Magnificent Bastard trope on tvtropes.com

      She's just awesomely terrible, basically

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Plenty of people have said what I needed to said. If a person is a complete monster, that still doesn't mean they're not an interesting character.

    • FlameRaven says:

Azula is a monster, still… I cannot help but pity her a little. I can't say more than that because pretty much all my reasons are spoilers. Well, wait, yes I can. She has a lot of admirable traits. She's a prodigy at firebending, amazingly talented, a skilled leader, good knowledge of tactics and 100% determined. The problem is that she turns all of those skills towards cruelty and malice, and is completely ruthless about taking people down. I mean, imagine what she could have been if only those skills were used for good.

      • TheWelshPirate says:

In many ways, Azula is even more tragic than Zuko. As much as Zuko has been scarred, both physically and emotionally, he still has enough of his humanity left to genuinely feel things. Ozai seems to have effectively stripped Azula of her humanity. I'm not even sure if she understands the concept of emotions as more than tools used to manipulate others. She has a far worse chance of being saved than her brother does.

And what kinds of things does it say about Ozai when his affection is more damaging to a person than his wrath?

        • FlameRaven says:

A friend of mine made the good point that while Azula is obviously Ozai's favorite, she's also had a message hanging over her head ever since Zuko's Agni Kai, which is "this is what happens when you screw up." No wonder Azula is so obsessed with complete perfection, if she's seen how easily people who are not perfect are tossed aside. :/

    • Jay Gatsby says:

America's founding fathers did some horrific and conniving things, but despite that they are all fascinating and impressive men.

    • Elexus Calcearius says:

Shhh, Spoilers. No mention of the finale, please.

    • <img src=http://i54.tinypic.com/k53bit.gif>

  2. SPOILER WARNING:

Some of your predictions are right and some of them are wrong.

  3. BECAUSE SHE'S AWESOME.

    <img src="http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lmwcddnXcO1qhq27ao1_500.gif&quot; border="0">

I realize that GIF has nothing to do with Avatar but I have no intention of waiting 3 months for it to be relevant so:

  5. Jupiter Star says:

GYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH MUST. NOT. SPOIL. MUST. NOT…

You are so completely and utterly and never never never even the slightest tiny little bit prepared!

  6. kartikeya200 says:

Thy unpreparedness is so great that an important religious figure may be called upon to grasp the steering device of a motor vehicle.

    <3 <3 <3

  7. Jupiter Star says:

Also: liveblog of the 4-part finale? AMAZING.

  8. @IAmNidoking says:

FYI, since you're scheduling this far in advance, there are actually 17 episodes before the four-part finale in the final season. You get 21 episodes for the price of 20!

I always love seeing your final assessment of your predictions, because I think I always give you a bit more credit than you give yourself. Which reminds me… I don't think you ever looked back at your Deathly Hallows predictions, unless I missed that somewhere.

    • nanceoir says:

I'm pretty sure Mark's going by what the Netflix Streaming stuff says, and according to that, the finale is episode 16. (They combined the two-parters into single episodes.)

    • Mauve_Avenger says:

Originally, I thought he got the episode count by combining the two-parters, but then I realized that if that were the case it would be 15, not 16.

I'm guessing that's what's going to happen, anyway, since that would make the last standalone episode fall on the day before the liveblog.

Though that would mean doing an episode review on the 4th of July. =/

      • @IAmNidoking says:

Reviewing a third-season episode (late third season, even) with fireworks exploding outside? I see nothing wrong with this plan.

        • rainbowsinside says:

That reminds me of when I watched Avatar with a bunch of friends who had never seen it before. We finished the whole series on the Fourth of July and then went out into the parking lot and pretended to have Agni Kais with roman candles.

    • tia says:

But there are at least two two-parters.

  9. alexamarie0813 says:

it's almost over 🙁 this has been wonderful.

  10. Jon says:

Oh Mark, why would you want to watch the movie? Don't do it!

  11. Avit says:

Oh my god Mark, you have no idea how difficult it is not to burst out laughing at the chilling accuracy of some of these predictions.

You can decide for yourself whether I'm being sarcastic.

  12. @maybegenius says:

Oh, Mark. Dearest Mark. You are adorable and ILU.

I was actually very impressed with how many points you got right in your Season 2 predictions. Well done, sir. But now you are back to having ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA. I love that part.

Also, you forgot the prediction about Momo stealing Zuko's honor and the harrowing game of Fire Soccer he has to play against Aang to get it back. Appa's the goalie.

  13. enigmaticagentscully says:

Oh Mark, since this is this the first thing I've actually watched along with you (as in, haven't coincidentally watched/read before anyway) I'll have to do the movie too I guess. But I've heard it's so bad…

Wait…aren't you watching Battlestar Galactica after Avatar? I'll hold on to that thought to keep me going! 😀

    • RJM says:

This is the first thing I've watched with him too. (Except I'm a couple episodes ahead because I got greedy.)

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Yes, I am!!! I am quite excited.

      • Imasalmon says:

It is so, so terrible. And not even terrible in comparison to the TV show, or so terrible that it is ironically fun. It is just plain bad. Wooden acting, horrible script, ridiculously awful pacing. Almost no redeeming virtues.

Sigh, when you watch it, remember this: M. Night Shayamalan said he wanted to do the movie because his daughter loved the series and wanted to be Katara for Halloween. To come up with the product he did, I think he must hate his daughter. It makes me sad just thinking about it. It is a truly abhorrent piece of cinema.

        • FlameRaven says:

I blame M. Night for a lot of the fail that became the movie, but I do think that not all of it was his fault: I'm pretty well convinced that a lot of the most heinous things (like the casting) were likely the product of executive meddling. I'm sure it was M. Night's fault that the movie became such SRS BZNS, though, where no one is allowed to smile.

      • enigmaticagentscully says:

I have to admit, I was finding it so difficult to stop myself from watching the rest of Avatar before you, I started re-watching BSG to take my mind off it. 😀

It is frakking BRILLIANT, even better than I remembered. Now every episode I see I think 'omg what will Mark think of this???

  14. alexamarie0813 says:

by the way, mark, do you think you'll do a post after the liveblog of the finale? i mean, will you do a sort of summed-up post on what you felt on the finale, and your last thoughts on the series as a whole?

  15. alexamarie0813 says:

this gif will never make me not laugh.

  16. Kuzon says:

There are 17 episodes before the finale.

    • nanceoir says:

When you're watching the show on Netflix Instant Streaming (which is, I believe, how Mark is watching), Season 3 has 16 episodes because Netflix combined the mult-part episodes into single episodes.

      • xpanasonicyouthx says:

This. I'm not going to split up two-parters.

        • MichelleZB says:

I think you split a two-parter up in season one and it nearly destroyed you and all of us, so I approve heartily. Well done.

        • Bonzu says:

I don't like this. Each episode is a masterpiece and should get its own review. Otherwise you start skipping over the details. Also this combination of episodes seems to be quite random. The finale of season 2 wasn't actually a double episode, on the other hand, season 3 has only 15 "unique" episodes before the finale. And your brain would not survive watching the finale without a break.

But of course, this is your project. If from now on you posted nothing but key smashes, this would be fine.

  17. thefireandthehearth says:

ALL OF YOUR PREDICTIONS ARE RIGHT

    EXCEPT THE ONES THAT AREN'T
    :3

Katara will use her healing powers four times over the course of the season.
Why four times? Seems like a random number.

It makes me kind of sad that we're so close to the end of Mark Watches ATLA. But there's more time still yet!

    • Why four times? Seems like a random number.
One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy.

      • echinodermata says:

Let's remember that "insane" is a pejorative not to be used on this site.

        • Tilja says:

Then what would you call Azula? I can't think of any better word, but if you can I'm all attention.

I was going to use evil but somehow that doesn't convey the meaning.

          • Vikinhaw says:

well… of the top of my head… some options might be:

Terrible, awful, cruel, manipulative, scheming, resourceful, dishonest, ambitious, determined, violent, aggressive, devious, powerful, charismatic, pragmatic, brilliant, sadistic, in control, controlling, proud, witty, sarcastic, calm, awesome, terrifying, magnificent villain.

There are many other options besides 'insane' that don't hurt people.

            • Tilja says:

Give me one that conveys a warped malignant personality. My original post was that, if Katara's healing abilities could only heal personalities, she'd have to use them a lot in this season. That is where I used that word that doesn't convey a personality in need of healing, something that doesn't have to do with just mind or emotion.

If you can think of a term to define a sick personality that poisons itself and others, please tell me. I seem to have a poor vocabulary in the health department because I can't think of anything suitable.

              • echinodermata says:

Look, you just conveyed what you wanted – she has a warped, malignant personality that poisons itself and others.

The point of my original comment was that "insane" is a slur – it is an oppressive term used against people with mental health conditions.

This is a post about "crazy" as a slur, and here's another one, but the explanations are the same for a word like "insane."

And I will end with this thought: this isn't a debate. This is a mod saying using "insane" in this manner is against site rules. The rule is not going to change, even if you disagree with it. If you feel like discussing this further, I suggest you instead go peruse the comments on the "Bitter Work" post because, well, people challenged the rule in question, and mods, including Mark, were explaining why the rule stands. This is not debatable.

                • Tilja says:

I don't disagree, I never complained. I didn't know until you first pointed it out that the word had fallen into the slur ban, probably because I didn't read the debate in "Bitter Work" (which, btw, I can now read thanks to your links). I couldn't think of another word so I used it as what I considered something mild and general because I always use it to describe myself so I saw no harm in it (that might make you wonder perhaps what kind of being I might be if I choose to still call myself 'insane').

I never debated the decision to erase my post nor the use of words in this site, I understand and support the site rules. I only want more vocabulary to change my word choice. I NEED a better vocabulary and that's why I asked and kept asking for words and definitions. I know my style of writing seems not to be considered polite at times, but I never expected it to be considered belligerent and be called on for being disagreable only because I asked for words. I just don't understand the reprimand for agreeing with you and asking your help to change my choice of words.

I have to thank you for pointing out the posts to read. That way I can keep informed. Thank you for the explanation as well. I'm sorry for the mess, I never expected I could sound as opposing by asking for help.

    • Hyatt says:

Because Four is Death? Though to really be symbolic, the last time she uses her healing, it wouldn't work and the person ends up dying.

  18. sabra_n says:

Katara will use her healing powers four times over the course of the season.

I have no idea if this one will come true or not, but good for you, taking a chance by using a specific number like that. You're setting yourself up for failure, of course, but still. 😛

  19. Anne says:

Oh god, THE LAST AIRBENDER. I can't wait.

  20. Wang_Fire says:

Oh wow, one of those predictions…

You're not allowed to watch the last season in a month. We had a horribly fragmented release over the course of nearly a year.

  21. arctic_hare says:

Man, I'm torn between excitement for Book Three, and sadness that this is almost over. 🙁 But! Without further ado!

    SPOILER ALERT

The show will end with an image mirroring something we saw in the very first episode.

Indeed, this is true. Aang defeats Ozai in a penguin sledding race.

  22. Reverse830 says:

When you watch the finale, you will wish that those 90 minutes would never end.

When you watch the movie, you will wish for anything that could give you those 90 minutes back.

    • Tilja says:

No truth telling device could ever refute this statement. Nor any lying ability could ever overcome such a statement.

  26. lossthief says:

Not to nit-pick (bullshit, all i ever do is nit-pick) but the movie is just called "The Last Airbender". They dropped the "Avatar" part so as not to insight the wrath of James Cameron.

Posting mine again, just because. Cannot waitt. Did they really release the last few episodes all as one thing?

Aang finally tells Katara how he feels
More Suki! Please let her be okay.
Sokka goes into battle alongside his dad
We finally figure out about Iroh’s journey to the spirit world
    HAPPY ENDING PLEASE ;_;
We find a way to revive the air nation? Please? There has to be some way, otherwise the Avatar cycle really will end in just a few generations, and everything’s out of balance.
Azula’s scheminess comes back to kick her in the ass
    We finally see Ozai’s face

    • kartikeya200 says:

If I remember it right, there were huge, irritatingly long hiatuses in the airing of this season, Nick did ridiculous things like release the DVDs of the last few episodes BEFORE they aired, and the last few episodes were aired kind've like 'okay NEW EPISODE EVERY DAY THIS WEEK' followed by 'RIGHT AND FUCK IT, LET'S AIR ALL OF THE LAST FEW TOGETHER ON FRIDAY OR SOMETHING, and call it a ~movie~".

      • kaleidoscoptics says:

What is it with channels doing weird shit with the air dates of actually good shows? Good thing this was the last season or we might have had another Firefly. :\

    • echinodermata says:

ooh, thanks for posting your own predictions! Love reading these.

    • Dragonsong12 says:

YAY! Your predictions were as fun as Mark's! And like him, your accuracy varies (which is a good thing and I won't say what's what :D)

  28. MocataJoy says:

Okay. In honor of Mark finally making it to season 3 (My favorite season!)……
You guys, I have made a thing.
    A cuddly, miniature, Appa-shaped thing!!!

    APPA DEMANDS SNUGGLES!!!
(I actually wanted to post this for “Appa’s Lost Days”, but it took longer than expected to create.)

  29. Jenny_M says:

Not to spoil, but Mark does know that the Doctor shows up in episode 12, and Rory teaches Aang how to Awesomebend, right? No? That's a spoiler? Damn it.

  30. Cakemage says:

!!! I am so excited for you to see season 3 that (mentally, at any rate) I'm bouncing around like Pinkie Pie on E. And, to prevent myself from accidentally giving anything away re: your predictions, I'm going to post a picture of my dog, Sokka, seen here with my dad, who is a wizard.

    <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/sadisticferret/photos/CIMG0732.jpg&quot; border="0" alt="Photobucket">

    • Dragonsong12 says:

For some reason, this just makes me think of Monkey Island 2 –
Guybrush: "She named her dog 'Guybrush'?!"
Gardener: "Yeah, I don't get it either. She says it's because he's dumb and helpless and always getting in the way."

This is not an insult on YOUR dog's intelligence, it just made me think of it and laugh.

      • Cakemage says:

Man, I really need to play those Monkey Island games. Every quote I hear from them makes me think they'd be right up my alley.

And you can't insult my dog's intelligence, because he hasn't any. XD I kid, I kid. It's not that he's dumb, it's just that he's klutzy, accident-prone, very food-motivated and (in true dachshund fashion) very stubborn. On the other hand, he's also incredibly cuddly, loyal, easy-going, friendly and unbelievably cute, so it all evens out.

      • TheWelshPirate says:

+100 points for the Monkey Island reference.

    • majere616 says:

      Why isn't MY dad a wizard : (

    • hpfan04 says:

One of my dogs is named Sokka too!! He's a husky though. Our other husky is named Yue, and our new setter pup is also named after an Avatar character that can't be named yet. So glad to find someone else that names their pets after Avatar characters! 😉

  31. echinodermata says:

    BEAUTIFUL

    • monkeybutter says:

The idea for it was the best thing to come out of that 200+ comment thread.

      • majere616 says:

Oh don't be that way. That thread had me in hysterics for like an hour. I love religious talks on the internet.

        • monkeybutter says:

Oh believe me, I enjoyed it. I came back to it like four times and read every single comment. It was a thing of beauty. But I stand by Aang take the reins, haha.

  32. RJM says:

Yeah. You look at her and you're all, "WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO EVIL, AZULA? YOU AND YOUR DANGEROUS LADIES COULD BE SO AWESOME AND EFFECTIVE IF YOU JOINED THE SIDE OF GOOD." She's a bit like her brother that way, only more competent (sorry Zuko!) and way, way less likely to actually join the good guys someday.

  33. kaleidoscoptics says:

    That makes no frigging sense.

  34. Toph13139 says:

Well, if you're at this point of the show, realizing how close you are to the end and you're sad… Imagine how the thousands of people that started watching Avatar from the very beginning felt when it was time to get it over with. Seriously.

    • Ashley says:

I imagine it was like when I watched Lost loyally every Wednesday and then Tuesday nights. It was really really sad when it was over. Why does it have to be over!? 🙁

Love your predictions, Mark. They make me smile/wrinkle my nose.

TARoh. Oh my gosh that would be amazing.

      Love that Rory .gif.

      • Toph13139 says:

Nope. It was worse. At least for me. I started watching Avatar at 11 years old and had to say goodbye at 14. It was a sad July 19th of 2008…. o-o

  35. Joe says:

Is it just predictions today and start the new season on Monday, or are you still working on the review for today?

  36. Alison Wilgus says:

Reading this really brought me back to what it was like to be in fandom for the ten or so months between seasons two and three. The points you make here — particularly with regards to the Fire Family and their intentions/allegiances/SURVIVAL — were all fiercely debated, and by that point we all cared SO MUCH OH GOD that it was hard not to be over-invested.

And that's not even getting into the shipping debates, which were…well, you know. Not fun.

But then, the gap between seasons also resulted in an ENORMOUS quantity of fanfiction and various long-form projects, many of which are still among my favorites — a hiatus boom much like what happened between books four and five of Harry Potter. And inevitably, much of that fanwork amounted to narrative speculation.

Basically, your prediction list is making me INTENSELY NOSTALGIC for all the alternate Season Threes that fandom created between December of 2006 and September of 2007. I'll have to go back and reread some of them now — all the hopes and desperate dreams of fandom, crystallized into 100,000 word epics about various combinations of characters SAVING THE WORLD (with or without Kissing).

  37. Tilja says:

Oh, Mark, you are definitely NOT PREPARED. But in a good and bad way. 🙂

  38. widerspruch says:

Lots of your predictions made me squeeeeee x3 Cannot wait for you to find out how right/wrong you were/are 😀

  39. AccioDeathlyHallows says:

Oh, Mark… YOU ARE SO UNPREPARED IT'S NOT FUNNY.
    And also, ohmygodsomeofthosepredictions.

  40. rainbowsinside says:

I still remember some of my major predictions from when we were waiting for season 3 to come out. And I'm not saying whether or not I was correct on any of them!

Aang would defeat Ozai at the end of the series, but would die in the process.

Katara would move on to marry a nice water tribe man and they would have a kid that would be the next Avatar.

Zuko would never fully join Team Avatar but would become sympathetic to their cause and probably work with his uncle underground to try to overthrow things. After the war, he would lead Fire Nation armies on a mission to rebuild across the other nations.

I also thought (read: wished desperately) that there would be a fourth book about after the war, and I don't think it's a spoiler to say that I was dead wrong on that count.

    • FlameRaven says:

There were rumors of Book 4: Air floating around for the entire run of the show. Needless to say, it was never true.

However, we're getting the spin-off show next year, which I think is going to be even better. 😀

      • hpfish13 says:

I thought it was this November! Did they push back the release date?

        • FlameRaven says:

Apparently the series was originally approved for only 12 episodes, but was then expanded to a full season's worth of 26 episodes. So they're working on the other 14 episodes and it'll come out next year instead.

          • hpfish13 says:

Ahhh…good to know, do they have a specific date for next year?

            • FlameRaven says:

Not that I've heard of. I would guess, though, that if they're going to do a whole season it'll probably start in September and go until March 2013?

  41. luckyduck says:

I'm sorry Mark, but I can't hold in this spoiler any longer.

We find out in the finale that Aang was just a decoy, and Cabbage Man is the actual Avatar and has to defeat Ozai by throwing cabbages at him with the help of his sidekick Foaming Mouth Guy.

  42. @Ahavah22 says:

I'd read it. One of the most harrowing flashbacks in Season 2 was Jet watching his home village burning down…that seriously changed my perception of him. And I liked him before that….WHY'D HE HAVE TO DIE!!!

  43. Lariren says:

You can still buy the novelization in bookstores. I still can't believe that happened.

  44. Lariren says:

    I love reading your predictions!

Just random question: did you keep track of how many times Katara healed someone in season 2 and came up with a number for season 3 or are you just guessing? It just seems like a random number.

  45. simplefaith08 says:

Since I can't say anything about your predictions (other than You're So Not Prepared)…
Good God, man, you're going to watch the movie?
I almost want to rent it on, like, redbox to do the liveblog with you (and so I can properly bash it, since I feel guilty for doing so without seeing it even though I know it's garbage), but on the other hand…ye-ah, it's The Last Airbender. So conflicted!

    • brotorious says:

this. i decided i wasn't going to watch it after i saw the earthbending gif floating around, but maybe it's time.

usually when people make horrible movie adaptations, they have the courtesy to make the action sequences fun or cool-looking (thanks, first five minutes of the "watchmen" movie!). i honestly don't know if i have it in me.

  46. jeno says:

I really hope not. Not even because of the content of it, but because I've been trying really hard to avoid DW spoilers until I got caught up. And if I managed to get spoilered by a gif on *this* blog I will not be happy.

  47. Jaxx_zombie says:

Mark you are so cute in how little you know. ^.^

  48. @Ahavah22 says:

First of all, I love reading your predictions! It's so much fun!

Second of all, why you do live-blog of finale on my Shabbos? I get to read it all later, right? (I'm not really upset at all, so much stuff goes on on Saturdays & I'm happy to rest)

Third of all, I'm going to miss these reviews so much, it's not even normal. `,_`,

I think you should get full credit for this, exact numbers aren't that important!

But you missed Professor Zwei in "The Library" and Suki(!) in "The Journey to Ba Sing Se, Part 1"
+ The Earth King in the last few eps!

In honor of Father's Day, let's rate the Dads of Avatar:

*OZAI*–Worst Father Ever. I bet he has a mug that has that inscribed on it in ancient Chinese script…

*IROH*–He was a great dad, and even though his son is no longer with him, he's such a good, patient foster-father/Uncle to Zuko, he deserves a "Best Uncle Ever" tea cup! 🙂

*LAO BEI FONG*—- Most Overprotective Father award, anyone? Seriously, overprotective to the detriment of his daughter's best interests. Needs to learn how to respect and let go.

    *TYRO*(Haru's Dad)—Good, supportive father.

*THE MECHANIST*—Great, wonderful, supportive and loving towards his son, Teo. Extra points for changing his ways and looking at Aang's POV!

*CHIEF ARNOOK*–Loves his daughter, Yue, but a bit too steeped in tradition in regards to arranged marriage.Took the ultimate sacrifice of his daughter's life with grace. (*sniff*)

    *Tahn*—New Daddy! Isn't Hope a cutie?

*HAKODA*–AMAZING, WONDERFUL, SUPPORTIVE AND LOVING! Sadly, spends too little time with his kids. We hope this can be resolved in Book 3!

There are other dads in the first & second seasons, such as Gansu (Lee's father in "Zuko Alone") and Mai and TomTom's father in "Return to Omashu". I don't feel that we are given enough info to analyze them (then again, the same can be said for Tahn!). I'd love to see everyone's comments (and if I missed any fathers in Avatar, let me know. Hmmm, Monk Gyatso should get an award, too! Best Father Figure and Pie Thrower! :P)

  49. @Ahavah22 says:

Cabbage Bending For The Win!!! Love the GIF!

  50. anzel89 says:

*looks at list then bangs head repeatedly on table*

Sometimes you are so evil and you don't even know it!!! *pout*

    As for the movie, I swore on principle never to see that…THING…again! >_> Though I will participate in the liveblog as that … THING… is sadly seared into my subconscious. -_-;

    • FlameRaven says:

If it is really too painful to watch, go get the Rifftrax version of it. It's MST3K, for modern movies! I think that's the way I'll be watching for the liveblog.

  51. echinodermata says:

Posted the other three in an earlier review, and here's the last:

  52. aaren says:

Azula is an awful person through and through. Her talent isn't enough to make me like her. It impresses me, but I could never like her.

  53. bookgal12 says:

As someone who has seen all the episodes, I think your predictions are cute and as some have said some are right and some are wrong. The third season is my favorite, so I can't wait for you to get started! You are so unprepared!

  54. Teaspoon Capacity says:

Predictions (that technically don't count since I've seen the entire series already):
    1. There will be people.
    2. There will be awesome.
    3. There will be fire.
    4. There will be major badassery.
    5. There will be cake.

Your unpreparedness makes for awesome keysmashing and foaming. YOU ARE NOT PREPARED, MARK.

  55. Pelleloguin says:

*Dances in place like a little kid after eating a jumbo pixie stick* Ohmygod, you'resounpreparedit'salmostfunnythisisgoingtobeawesome, andIwanttospoilbutIshallnotruinthepureEPICthatisthisshow!
WOO! FINALE LIVEBLOG! Wait…I have to work on Saturdays! Dawww! Poo.
The movie? I only survived that by treating it as a parody and then going home and rewatching the whole series and buying the artbook. I wish you luck, Mark.

    • Pelleloguin says:

and as the internet ate the last part of the never ending squeeze, here it is:
      pureEPICthatisthisshow!

  56. Joeldi says:

Wow, I remember all the ridiculousness surrounding the release of Book 3 episodes. How three or four episodes were aired in Canada months before they aired on US Nick, and then the last six or so were leaked because the DVDs were actually produced and delivered to stores before the finale had even aired, and THEN, for some reason, at least one episode was actually shown on Australian Nick, before finally being aired on US Nick. What on Earth was going on?

  57. Hotaru_hime says:

Katara will use her healing powers four times over the course of the season.
That's a really specific prediction. Why four?
    But yeah… NEVER PREPARED.
    It's good stuff though.

  58. FlameRaven says:

…. you're going to watch the finale and then watch the Last Failbender? Ouch. When I saw that, it was only survivable through copious quantities of alcohol. I think watching it after the epic finale (it's not four episodes, it's a fucking animated film) is just going to make the universe implode.

    • Avatar_fan_mom says:

Yes. I wholeheartedly agree that this point be reconsidered. The series is so much EPIC awesomeness, that I would hate to watch the movie right after it. Blech. It's like having dog food for dessert after a gourmet meal….

      • FlameRaven says:

Well, I think it's possible. It's just going to make the movie that much more disappointing. Like, I saw the movie and it was so awful it hurt. Then I rewatched the finale and was like 'Many movies are less epic than this, M.Night, including yours. How did you fuck this up?'

Also, given that the finale is essentially a movie in its own right, I was never sure why they thought they could do a movie that would work better in less time. Actually, I never understood why they were going to do each season as a movie in the first place. You cannot condense 10 hours of plot into 1 1/2 hours of movie. It won't work. Why did they try?

  59. Discreetly says:

Just to balance out everyone's positive comments before you start Season 3, I will say that I HATE season 3 and think it's terribly BORING. You are not prepared… for the boring.

    • MichelleZB says:

Are you being sarcastic? Because… the part… with the stuff… and the… things…

      • Hyatt says:

Doubt it. There's a significant amount of hate for Season 3. Personally, I blame the 9-month hiatus and erratic airing schedule, which gave the fandom all the more time to build up their hopes and expectations and get invested in them, only to be more disappointed when canon went in a different direction than what they wanted.

        • MichelleZB says:

Oh, I guess I understand. I watched ATLA all in one go after it aired, so I didn't have the same fandom speculation running through my brain.

But I do remember the 3-year wait for Order of the Phoenix. A lot of people found that book disappointing, I think for the same reason.

          • Hyatt says:

Exactly the comparison I was thinking of. Though ATLA fandom never reached the heights of entitlement that HP fandom had and still has.

      • Discreetly says:

Completely serious. Season 1 and especially 2 are much better in my opinion. Can't say more than that, just felt Mark should get a little salt with all this sugar in the comments.

    • Superstarseven says:

This post you left is terribly boring. Book 3 is some of the best TV ever aired. Shut your stupid face.

      • Avit says:

        …dude, what's gnawing your bulge?

      • xpanasonicyouthx says:

Fuck you. Get off my site.

        • Joe says:

I am of the opinion that shipping fuels a lot of the venom directed at Season 3. I also watched the show after all the episodes aired, so that may be another reason I highly enjoyed Season 3. Seeing as i didn't have to suffer through the 9 month wait. I don't feel you will be let down.

          • Discreetly says:

I ship nothing. Season 3 has faults primarily with its pacing and writing. Throughout the entirety of the season, I am nowhere near as engrossed or immersed as I was during the other two seasons. The plot moves from absolute ridiculousness to utter seriousness throughout the entire season. Usually this switch between moods is imperceptible, but in this season the switch is not only noticeable, it is jarring. The character development is the weakest it has ever been, as it loses all sense of subtlety, any change in a character is plainly pointed out by everyone else, eliminating any nuance of a deeper meaning and making it seem like a forced and calculated gesture on the part of the writers.

These are the fundamental problems. Lesser, but still major problems is the total lack of interesting episode plots. There are several episodes that remind me of The Great Divide episode in regards to how completely pointless and uninteresting they are. When given such aimlessness, it's usually the character development that makes up for it, but as I said before, it comes off as unnatural. The connection between the episodes of the season is also the weakest it has ever been. There remains the overarching goal of "save the world", but the episodes are so peripheral to this intention it is hard to care for them. Several episodes could have been entirely removed and I would have noticed no difference.

There are things I enjoyed about this season (the animation is fantastic and there are a few spectacular episodes) but as a whole, the third season is the least impressive.

            • FemShep says:

I don't… understand. I can read what you're saying, but my brain literally cannot comprehend it. I cannot even imagine which "pointless and uninteresting" episodes you are referring to (which we obviously can't discuss here for spolier's sake). To each his/her own, I guess.

    • brotorious says:

i understand where this sentiment is coming from. it's hard to explain without spoilers. i dearly love season 3, but there's some things that might have been handled better. taken as a whole, it's a bit inconsistent. that being said, there's a LOT of awesome. like, enough awesome to power a thousand suns.

it's like star wars. empire strikes back is generally considered to be the best, but no one finishes watching return of the jedi feeling disappointed. from a purely critical standpoint, one can see how the star wars writers kinda wrote themselves into a place where it would be difficult to follow through. some things don't quite add up (obi-wan's "from a certain point of view" lines), some bits are awkward ("oh i guess that love triangle didn't pan out and i was making out with my sister"), some of it is cloying and schmaltzy (ewoks), some scenes were a bit forced (what made the emperor think that luke would ever WANT to rule the galaxy with an iron fist?), etc.

still, one would have to work pretty hard at being cynical to not enjoy ROTJ. when i'm watching it, i'm mostly thinking: fuck yeah lando! pilot that millennium falcon! blow up that death star! oh yeah, leia, choke that mobster! come on luke, swing that lightsaber! redeem that father! these are characters and a setting that i've grown to love, and while it's not perfect, i'm willing to accept a few shortcomings. i'm not saying that it's immune to criticism. there is a limit: i'm not a fan of the star wars prequels, for example. and i'm not terribly interested in watching the live action "the last airbender".

tl;dr: season 3 will be fun.

  60. arctic_hare says:

For those fretting about Mark watching the Last Failbender movie, just remember: the Rifftrax version is allowed.

It's truly the ONLY way to watch that travesty and make it through whole. I fully believe that any other way will utter destroy your SOUL. As it is, you'll still take damage, but will emerge with some fragments intact.

    • hpfish13 says:

I went to see it in theaters, in the costume I posted earlier this week….let's just say I was thoroughly disappointed…

Then, I had promised to see it with another friend who was coming into town 2 days after I had seen it. So….I saw the movie twice in a 3 day period, in theaters. Not the best weekend at the movies ever…..

    • kartikeya200 says:

I managed without the Rifftrax by watching it at 3am on no sleep and a whole lot of sugar.

…And then I kind've liveblogged it at the same time. Or I kept making comments off the top of my head to my poor online friends, which I then compiled together afterward.

Rifftrax is much much better, but it was a coping method!

      • I was one of the unfortunate midnight viewers. Speaking of coping, I think my stages of grief went: Denial, boredom, anger, denial, anger, fury, hate, inconsolable rage. I'm not even sure I can handle the Rifftrax.

    • FlameRaven says:

We survived it as a drinking game! There were three simple rules:

      Take a drink whenever
      1) A character is blatantly OOC
      2) Setting/world details have been changed for no reason/make no sense
      >caveat: you only have to drink once for each of the mispronounced names
      3) There is bad filmmaking in general: stilted dialogue, awful effects, terrible editing, etc.

Tip: drink something light, like beer, otherwise you might die. The movie is like a textbook example of what not to do in filmmaking.

However, by the end of the movie with these rules, it WAS significantly more entertaining.

Question that may not yet be answerable: I know that Netflix Instant Streaming has the multi-part episodes automatically grouped, but are there going to be small breaks between the finale episodes a la the AVPM liveblog to ensure synchronicity with other people's legal or supralegal viewing methods, or are we embracing the chaos for this one?

    • xpanasonicyouthx says:

I'll schedule breaks to accomodate everyone!!!

    • lossthief says:

there's actually a completely legal way to view the show online. With only a couple exceptions, Nickelodeon has all the episodes available for streaming online, it's just that at the point where there would be commercial breaks on TV, they have online ads, usually for other nickelodeon stuff.

  63. Arione says:

omgz. This may be the first liveblog I can actually take part in… Time differences allowing, hopefully I’m not operating an excavator for my father at the time. (I’m on holidays soon, and I’m going to help my dad with his project of converting an old, 20m in diameter, water reservoir into a pair of luxury town houses. Because my folks aren’t very cashed up, dad is literally doing everything himself, from earthmoving to bricklaying… I’m going to learn how to drive an excavator almost solely so that I can up my zombie apocalypse survival credibility.)

  64. Oh man, Mark, please consider sparing your enjoyment and watching "The Last Airbender" first than the series finale! Or perhaps the effect of that will backfire…! Aaaahhhhh!

  65. Sarah says:

So, Mark. I am on my phone right now so I don’t know if Antibes mentioned it, but between the NINE MONTH BREAK hey realeased an all avatar magazine which included comics from in between the seasons. You will probably be less confused if you read them? They are probably on the Internet somewhere, but if not and you want to I do still have the magazine and could probably get those comics online for you somehow.

  66. Jay Gatsby says:

LiveBlogging for the finale is THE BEST IDEA EVER! Give us an official date & time so that we can plan in advance for it!

YAY. I WANT TO BE THERE FOR THE FINALE 😀

Also lolololol oh god ~The Last Airbender~, I can't with that movie. It's one of the worst movies I've ever had the misfortune of watching. I watched a cam version online, and I STILL felt like I'd been ripped off.

  68. @magfrypie says:

How on earth did you just make me feel a tiny bit sad that on the days of your liveblogs for the finale and the movie I will be at Disney World? HOWWWW???? I will attempt to put this out of my mind and focus on the fact that I'll get to see you at LeakyCon. :DDDD

  69. Melarra says:

Somehow, Mark has made me sad that I'm going on a super awesome Europe vacation-trip-event and will therefore be missing his final episode extravaganza. Only Mark can make me feel this conflicted about two amazing things! 😀

  70. Lady Pena says:

Waiting for season three was one of the most irritating parts of my cartoon watching life. There were nine months between the "The Crossroads of Destiny" and the season premiere. This time included winter, spring, and summer vacations. This meant that I had large chunks of time with literally nothing to do but goof off, which included speculating about the upcoming season of Avatar. That being said, I never had theories as interesting as yours.

    But I digress.

Fortunately for fans, this break wasn't completely devoid of Avatar goodness. It was during this time that a brief series of comics was released. These included a segment chronicling Aang's journey through the Spirit World to connect with his past Avatar incarnations. I remember correctly, the comic was actually part of an online game from Nickelodeon's website. The other two comics were released in an Avatar exclusive magazine and dealt with stories from both the gAang and the Fire Nation Royals. They are completely canon and prove to be…informational.

Now take note that this is my first reply to anything on any of your websites and I've only read this article and your review of the first two episodes of Avatar. That being said, I honestly have no idea how you're watching these. If you've been watching them on the "Complete Season" DVD sets, then you've noticed the exclusive DVD with bonus material. The digital Spirit World comic is available on this DVD, along with the three Super Deformed shorts. The magazine comics, on the other hand, are gonna be a little more difficult to get your hands on.

If you already knew this bit of rambling, then I apologize for wasting your time. In the meantime, would you mind telling me "who lit Toph on fire?"

  71. MichelleZB says:

It is actually worse than we can possibly describe, and may be the worst movie every made. Nobody was prepared.

  72. MichelleZB says:

Mark, what can I say? Your predictions are all 100% correct and you are clearly completely prepared for Season 3. Why do we even bother?

  73. Alan says:

    OH GOD YOUR PREDICTIONS.

    Be still, my spoilery heart.

  74. TheWelshPirate says:

You're actually going to watch M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender"?! Well, I guess there is no other way to understand how truly bad it is, but just prepare yourself for-

    <img src="http://www.gifsoup.com/view/324284/deep-hurting-o.gif"&gt;

  75. isoycrazy says:

I know. And then there was the scandal of Canada getting the episodes months before us.

  76. isoycrazy says:

Why do you wish for Iroh's death? I cannot understand why you wish him to die.

  77. Avatar_fan_mom says:

    Liveblog for the finale?!?

Momma likey. SO getting a babysitter. Right. NOW.

[Ok…also must say that I'm a complete liveblog virgin – this will be my first. So, thank you Mark and community for watching this series and giving me a chance to express my adoration for all that it is. Xo.]

  78. Avatar_fan_mom says:

Is there a gif of this?

  79. Mari says:

So I'm not the only one.

I was going all "YESSSS *sealclap*" and "ooooh Mark that's what I thought too *sealclap*

  80. Classtoise says:

Just a correct. P is impossible.

    Literally.

NO ONE IS BETTER THAN TOPH.

You heard her man she is the greatest earthbender ever P cannot ever come true ever

  81. CraftAndBurn says:

I thought the effects were decent tbh. It had that going for it at least.

  82. FlameRaven says:

Yes! Mike and Bryan have also confirmed that they will be writing ALL the episodes, and that there will be no 'filler' episodes so they can have a much tighter story.

  83. empath_eia says:

    HNNNNNGGGHHH

Excuse me while I tie up my hands to prevent myself from typing Things.

  84. Caterfree10 says:

Just like with the season season predictions I'm going "yes, no, yes, no, yes, yes, no, yes but no" (only nowhere near that order, js) once again, pfft. XD

    BUT OH LAWD

YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE IT

AND I WILL BE ALL OVER THAT LIVESTREAM LIKE UGLY ON AN APE. 8D

…Not so sure I want to hit up the TLA "movie" (I refuse to call that travesty a movie) disaster one, though. Simply out of the fact that watching a review of it was painful enough. X_x (WE CAN HAS RIFFTRAX? PLEASE??? IDK IF I CAN HANDLE THE FAILFEST WITHOUT SNARKY COMMENTARY. *SOB*)

BUT YEAH. *gearing up for Season 3 funtimes*

    • Caterfree10 says:

…That should say "second season" instead of "season season". I clearly cannot type this evening. *hides in corner of woe*

  85. @smartcync says:

I'm giggling and shaking my head and oh, Mark… I'm just going to pat you on the head and let you go on your merry way because LOL xD

  86. Pimento says:

” Toph will discover an earth bender who might be better than she is.”

    HOW DARE YOU?! :p

  87. Anna says:

LIVEBLOG FINALE IM SO THERE. Ooh, you're gonna watch the movie? Yikes. Yeah, you'll DEFINITELY need the support…
