Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’ Liveblog: Day of the Moon

Somehow, the wait from the premiere of series six until episode two has seemed like an eternity. But after everything that happened in “The Impossible Astronaut,” I think the whole Internet is pretty much ready for the second half of the two-part opener. Join us, Doctor Who fans, in watching “Day of the Moon.”

MY GOD THIS WEEK HAS BEEN UNBEARABLE

WHO IS IN THAT SUIT

WHAT THE HELL ARE THE SILENCE

HOW ARE THEY GOING TO WRITE THEMSELVES OUT OF THE DOCTOR’S DEATH

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON

Ok. Anyway. Liveblog time!!

This liveblog starts relative to you. So if it is airing on your television, start liveblogging away in the comments. Same for if you happen to be watching it online by less-than-legal means. (Though I would just time it with another time zone so you can comment with other people!) We already do this with Fringe and it works rather nicely. To avoid seeing spoilery comments regarding the episode from past livebloggers, I merely stay on the first page of comments and comment away, only going back after it’s over in order to comment on what other people said.

Sound fine? Just make sure not to post spoilers before this episode airs.

I am quite excited. I’m sure y’all are, too. As usual, the review for “Day of the Moon” will go up on Monday, May 1st.

Oh God, my TV inexplicably turned off while I was re watching Doctor Who and my first thought was Holy Sh*t there is a Silence next to me. THANKS MOFFAT

    • ldwy says:

I hear you. I had to go get the power cord for my computer in a ~dark part of my house~ and I was totally creeping around like a scaredy-pants. And the silence don't even have anything to do with the dark. I am just afraid of everything now. GREAT. THANKS MOFFAT.

  2. ldwy says:

Wow. My comments on this liveblog are an absolute MESS. Hahahaha, I'm just rambling and exclaiming in excitement and horror and throwing theories and ideas around like they're confetti and simply not making any sense. Or at least not much.

  3. Patrick says:

Just finished watching on my own and HOLY SHIT.

Doctor, you are a master planner. David Xanatos can suck it.

And the preview for next week…PIRATES. THE DOCTOR IS GOING TO HANG OUT WITH PIRATES. AND AMY BECOMES A PIRATE. BEST THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THINGS.

  4. @Katie_Kay11 says:

oh god, this episode. I don't even. what. so many questions.

Will this be the last time we see the silence? It seems like a lot of build up for this simple a solution.
Who is the child? So confused.

I think the room Amy goes into is a woman's room and not the child's. Children don't put photos on a dresser like that. Who is the woman with the eyepatch?

    Oh River/Doctor. Hotness/Sadness forever.

Re: Canton shooting the Silent. Is this how everyone sees the US?

Can't wait to hopefully get some of these questions answered in the series.

    • ShayzGirl says:

I'm very anti-gun (and I live in a very pro gun state (though not as bad as others)) but even I was like "Canton SHOOT IT!" because those things scare me.

      • Elexus Calcearius says:

Pretty much this. Randomly carrying around a gun might not be something I completely approve of but when you're being chased BY MURDEROUS ALIENS YOU CAN'T REMEMBER I'll be liked "Shoot it! Shoot it DEAD!"

        • sarasingsout says:

Jumpin' on this train. That one in particular seemed extra tall and menacing and terrifying. I generally do not approve of "shoot first, ask questions later," but given what they know about the Silent… yeah. I mean, they've got that whole mind-control thing going, too, so there's a certain element of "shoot it before it tells you to SHOOT YOURSELF INSTEAD."

  5. Penworthy says:

Just finished watching it here in The States, and can I just say HOLY MOTHER OF SHIT ON A CHEESESTICK.
This episode was amazing and yummy and heartbreaking and RIVER SONG IS A BAMF and American but still oh-so British and complex and River/The Doctor kiss scene and that ending scene was amazing and I am literally unable to type in regular sentences because holy shit what did I just watch.
If the rest of Season 6 is this good, I have a feeling my mind will be blown many, many times.

  6. Lioness says:

60s haunted house movies + 90s alien conspiracy paranoia + a TARDIS = made of Win.

Hash marks for Silence spotting: and here's Doctor Who giving us another cheap cosplay idea. Thanks guys! (Because you really owe us one after the Weeping Angels.)

So, what, the Doctor scurried around and whispered secret instructions in everyone's ears without the Silence noticing? Didn't we see that already on the Valiant? Hey, reuse those good ideas.

Now how did those things erase the TARDIS memory banks? Of did they?

Logan's Run flashback time! Moffet are you trying to steal from every bad old sci-fi/horror conspiracy movie in the same episode?
(DH the PhD: "If you steal from more than three they can't accuse you of plagiarism!")

And we're at a creepy orphanage that's straight out of several 60s horror movies, including everything Hammer ever did. Dh was squeeing madly over the 60s horror movie special effects shots. They're cheap as hell to shoot, but require a masterful director and camera crew to pull off.

Did you get Count Dracula's permission before you borrowed Mr. Renfrue?

Graffiti again. I swear one of these days Moffet's going to do a story about living, alien graffiti.

*massive cringe* Okay, sorry guys, but you don't get to joke about Apollo 1. I realize it's a historical faux pas, but no. Just don't go there.

Joking about Nixon and his paranoia, that you can do until the cows come home. And it looks like you probably will.

And we're nicely mixing 90s conspiracy paranoia with 60s horror movie ambiance again, which is good because I have a low tolerance of straight 90s conspiracy paranoia. Although considering that so much of 90s conspiracy paranoia was nothing but a rehash of old 60s and 70s horror and adventure TV shows and movies *cough*X-Files*cough* that's getting a bit incestuous, isn't it? Or maybe getting a bit close to crossing its own time stream?

And speaking of getting a bit incestuous/crossing it's own time stream, that spacesuit looks an awful lot like a Doctor Special, much more so than anything our alien pals could scavenge together. So is the girl a progeny of one/more of Team TARDIS? Or — and this is the more logical explanation if you think about it — is she a future incarnation of the Doctor? Because honestly, if she was a boy instead of a girl, isn't that the first thought that would have run through your head? Not going to speculate any more than that right now though. Life's too short to build mountains of fantasy out of molehills of clues.

Sorry, but haven't we seen the "they've already invaded and conquered us" story before? I mean surely all these secret invaders would be tripping over each other by now. And what have they got to show for themselves? So the Silence are really the equivalent of Marvel's Apocalypse or DC's Vandal Savage — immortal, immensely powerful, and completely useless.

And once again the Doctor doesn't mind a spot of genocide as long as he instigates it.

You realize you just encouraged thousands of children to deconstruct historical footage for fun, Steven. Is this the BBC's educational Good Deed of the Day?

Really impressive use of the correct procedure for firing an automatic weapon while surrounded by enemies, Dr. Song. That's something I only see in fiction about once every 20 years. Most action movies get it wrong.

Quantum pregnancy! Schroedinger's fetus! My first reaction was to giggle hysterically over Moffet's little joke. He's taken the old line, "You can't be a little bit pregnant! You either are or you aren't!" and turned it on its head.

Oh River, my heart is breaking for you. Doctor you have caused this wonderful woman a world of hurt, and most of it you haven't even done yet. You are going to have to be ten times more wonderful to her than you have ever been to anyone ever before to make up for it. And you'd better start soon.

DH: okay, so why can Team TARDIS remember them now?

So, it was funny and scary and tragic in spots and very, very clever. But is anyone besides me starting to get a bit annoyed at all the cleverness? It hasn't happened yet, but I can tell the day is coming when Moffet beating on my head with his clue stick is going to start getting old.

    • kat says:

"Graffiti again. I swear one of these days Moffet's going to do a story about living, alien graffiti."

I laughed so hard at this, but come to think of it…dear god you might be right o_O!

  7. JustAHufflepuff says:

    Oh. My. God.

    *rewatching*

    Freaky messages on the wall.

  8. JustAHufflepuff says:

    Awkward kiss.

    Oh River. 🙁

  9. Kiwi says:

Okay, feeling really dumb right now…. but until the Doctor spoke all tied up I hadn't realised it was him. d'oh!

  10. JustAHufflepuff says:

Wait, how did River and Rory get out of the tunnels without being electrocuted by the Silence? Weren't they blocking the only way out?

And the Doctor just left the little girl there. That doesn't sound like him, Amy had just shot her. What if it had actually hit and she was injured?!?

Also, since when does the Doctor encourage genocide?

And who is that little girl? Also, who will she regenerate in to?

So many questions, at least it's a filler next week and I don't have to wait in terrifying anticipation.

My reaction when Canton shot Rory: "NOOOOOOOOO! NOT RORY! DDDDDDDDDDDDDDx" The others, I didn't mind, but Rory's been through enough.

    • FlameRaven says:

Also, since when does the Doctor encourage genocide?

Pretty much EVERY time Earth is threatened, actually. Daleks, Racnoss, those fish-vampire things… you don't mess with the humans or Earth.

  11. Kiwi says:

My thoughts watching through the first time:

BAHAHHA RIVER INTO THE POOL. Epic dive, sweetie.
Okay, starting credits, great. Already so confused. Was that BBC logo always under the main logo?
    Okay orphanage…. traditionally creepy, cool.
    OOOOOOOO HANDSSSSS
THANK GOD AMY ISN’T PREGNANT. Not that I ever thought she wasn’t.
I’m pretty sure a silent couldn’t fit under MY bed, too much junk there.
Implant O_O that looks REALLY PAINFUL.
Hahahaha Already. THEY’RE IN THE TARDIS. Or… are they? What
Flashing lights… that is not good.
Orphanage dude is really out of it. Poor guy. He’s going to die, isn’t he?
lol doctor what had you done to the spaceship <3
GET OUT AMY. MARKS OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.
Anybody else think the silent look scarier when they’re slimy?
HEY NIXON. You’re about to be an ass, aren’t you? XD
HEY RIVER AND RORY. I didn’t notice you at first. Am I just missing Amy? Or is this at the same time as the orphanage?
    Awwwww, Nixon you disappointed me.
    Was that… an eyepatch?
Okay, if the girl really is Amy’s kid… why do the silent need her?
CAN THE SILENCE BE KILLED!? You have to wonder with Moffat…
Okay, girl not in the suit….
    AMY WHERE DID YOU GOOOOOOOOO
RORY YOU ARE SO CUUUUUUUUUUTE <3 ‘Always’ <3
Ahhh Amy, breaking Rory’s heart…. Trust the roman, would you?
    ‘Silence, Doctor…. Silence will fall’
LOL NIXON. You keep popping up. It’s awesome.
    ‘For America’… oi
Okay, on the ‘timelines backwards thing’ has that time when the Doctor took her to the towers and cried already happened? Or will it be one of the few times when they’ve nearly experienced everything together?
Canton has a cell phone. And its pink. (okay its Amy’s) Okay, at least he acknowledged it.
AMY WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO.
LOL RORY I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO SAY ‘So was I.”
Oooooo yay! Confirmation….? Naw, Rory is sad. Okay, I’m happy with the ‘door’ thing.
Amy, you better not stay a D.I.D mode too long.
    “You’re ugly.” LOL.
C’mon Silent, don’t give anything away
OH NO THEY’RE GONNA BE ON TEH VIDEO AREN’T THEY
    HAHAHAHAHHAA YES!
    Please please work?
    YAYYAYAYAY!!!!! RORY YOU STUPIDFACE
    River, you are kickass.
Rory, you are so insecure <3
    Lol, Nixon’s face.
    CANTON. CANTON.
KISSY. ‘You’re acting like we haven’t done that before’
    Naw, now River is sad.
WAIT. AND OUR LAST TIME? OR WAS IT ‘A’ LAST TIME.
‘I don’t know but what if it had one?’
    SERIOUS FACES.
OH DAMNIT. She is pregnant. -_-
    OH HELL NO. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Moffat…. you are an evil mad genius.

And now to watch again. Yay downloading <3

  12. prideofportree says:

I just want the Doctor to stop changing his morals on gun because River's the one shooting. :/ she's still kind of a bit too… perfect for me.

    • ch7pper says:

I've been watching Five and there is a lot of shooting going on here. Plus, Doctor didn't object to K9 blasting everything

      • jennywildcat says:

After watching all of Five's run, it's sort of difficult for me to take the Doctor's aversion to guns seriously.

  13. plummy says:

    THEORIES ABOUND

I hope that worked…Ok. So I have been thinking about this episode, and especially about the little time girl child at the end. Isn't regeneration a technology, and not an inherent trait to Time Lords? That's why the Time Lord Council could limit the number of regenerations, or give more (as they did to the Master at one point). So could it be that the little girl is just a normal(ish) child, but was given this technology for some purpose, possibly by the Silence–maybe so that the Lodger!Tardis would recognize her and she could pilot it? Yes/No?

    • sarasingsout says:

I think that was the original canon, but we saw Jenny come back to life in The Doctor's Daughter without any kind of intervention. Granted, it wasn't a full on flaming-with-golden-light regeneration, but it does seem to imply that the new show may treat regeneration as something at least partly intrinsic to Timelord biology.

Still, if that kid is Amy's, there's going to be a need for Serious Explanations at some point. Because I'm pretty sure the child of two perfectly normal humans doesn't do that sort of thing.

  14. ShayzGirl says:

Last night as I went to bed, I was thinking on the whole Time Head thing and my brain automatically went to Old Who "The City of Death" of the picture of Romana that the artist sketched with her face as a clock. So now every time I think or see "Time Head" I picture a baby with a face for a clock and it makes me laugh.

  15. ThreeBooks says:

I just finished watching it on iTunes.

WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH AMY'S BABY BUMP.

    • Goldensage says:

The Schrodinger's Pregnancy? Because I didn't actually see a physical baby bump

IT IS A MYSTERY EITHER WAY

      • ThreeBooks says:

Yeah I didn't see the bump either, but when the bump happens will it like, I don't know, deflate and inflate?

(I saw the Three Months Later and Amy being flat-tummied and was like ":( miscarriage, poor Amy." I don't really know yet if time!baby is better or worse. Also I fail at biology because she should not be showing at ~four months.)

        • rumantic says:

It's likely that you would just about be showing at 4 months. Depends what she is wearing really.

BUT if the baby is like a time baby it might be frozen at 1 month anyway.

  16. Hotaru_hime says:

Finally watched this, what the fuck, I can't even.

  17. Wookie_Monster says:

MY DIGNITY IS IMPAIRED. EX-TER-MI-NATE THE ROYALS!!

  18. daisysparrow says:

Those little glowing hand nanobots are totes Remembralls!!! I want one.

I provide the ideas above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions just like the one you bring up the place an important factor will likely be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if greatest practices have emerged round issues like that, however Im sure that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Anyway, in my language, there arent a lot good supply like this.
