Mark Watches ‘Doctor Who’ Liveblog: Day of the Moon

Somehow, the wait from the premiere of series six until episode two has seemed like an eternity. But after everything that happened in “The Impossible Astronaut,” I think the whole Internet is pretty much ready for the second half of the two-part opener. Join us, Doctor Who fans, in watching “Day of the Moon.”

MY GOD THIS WEEK HAS BEEN UNBEARABLE

WHO IS IN THAT SUIT

WHAT THE HELL ARE THE SILENCE

HOW ARE THEY GOING TO WRITE THEMSELVES OUT OF THE DOCTOR’S DEATH

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON

Ok. Anyway. Liveblog time!!

This liveblog starts relative to you. So if it is airing on your television, start liveblogging away in the comments. Same for if you happen to be watching it online by less-than-legal means. (Though I would just time it with another time zone so you can comment with other people!) We already do this with Fringe and it works rather nicely. To avoid seeing spoilery comments regarding the episode from past livebloggers, I merely stay on the first page of comments and comment away, only going back after it’s over in order to comment on what other people said.

Sound fine? Just make sure not to post spoilers before this episode airs.

I am quite excited. I’m sure y’all are, too. As usual, the review for “Day of the Moon” will go up on Monday, May 1st.

Millions of children must have wet themselves in the UK this evening.

  2. monkeybutter says:

What the hell was that lady all about?

    • ldwy says:

I didn't know either, cause then there was noone in the room.

      But.
It kind of reminds me of how in The Lodger the thing in the room trying to build a tardis could show you whatever would make you come in…could this be somethign like that? Was that related???

      • monkeybutter says:

        That's a really good idea!

      • kat says:

I think this will come up in a later episode. In one of the trailers you can see the doctor looking into a room with a clown (they're in a hotel of some sort) and I think the door had a sort of similar opening. Maybe all the doors in that hotel(?) show different points in time. I might have remembered it incorrectly of course…

    • fakehepburn says:

My two word Moffat-ripping-off-a-different-show theory: "Normal Again."

  3. rabbitape says:

    Um ok…

  4. __Jen__ says:

    what? what? what?

  5. ldwy says:

So now she can't even trust that what she's seeing is real????

  6. monkeybutter says:

Why is Amy there, too?! Baby? WTF?

  7. rabbitape says:

Well this is GREAT and not at all disturbing!

  8. ldwy says:

    WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT?????
    Noooooooooooo

    The astronaut?? What?

Hahaha, my comments are incoherent blethering.

  9. __Jen__ says:

Oh GOD THE PICTURES. This episode is blowing my mind.

  10. celestineangel1 says:

    Oh RORY.

    OH GODS THE KID….

  11. ldwy says:

    Look the bullethole….

  12. ldwy says:

Flashback to boy in gas mask

    • monkeybutter says:

YES! Why didn't I think of the Empty Child? It's still my favorite episode/two-parter.

      • ldwy says:

A lot of things in this episode made me think of past Moffatt episodes. It wasn't bad, but I did notice it.

  13. monkeybutter says:

    Renfrew? Werfner…

  14. ldwy says:

    IT WAS THEMMMMMM

  15. __Jen__ says:

    Canton, you are brilliant.

  16. ldwy says:

Since the wheel and the fire? Say what?

    Hahahaha, welcome to America.

  17. rabbitape says:

Ha! Nice. A bit rash, though. Shooting one can't lead to anything good.

  18. ldwy says:

That's the little girl…if she's out of the spacesuit…is Amy in it????

    Okay, no.

  19. rabbitape says:

THAT IS NO GOOD AT ALL

  20. __Jen__ says:

    Amy NOOOOOO

  21. ldwy says:

Oh no!!! They're hearing the recording. So this is all in the past! Where is she? Okay, at least it's current.

Okay, I'm a huge fan of adorable serious Rory in glasses.

  22. __Jen__ says:

RORY AND AMY. <3 I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

  23. monkeybutter says:

Aww, Rory, way to look on the bright side.

  24. ldwy says:

    Rory is so devoted.
And then Amy speaks to the Doctor. How tragic. But I do understand. But awwwwwww.

  25. celestineangel1 says:

    WHAT. AMY.

This… reminds me far too much of the data ghosts… oh gods, I know it's not, but it's still scary.

AMY STOP IT. STOP CALLING FOR THE DOCTOR, RORY LOVES YOU YOU IDIOT.

  26. ldwy says:

I like the old movie feel of the flashbacks.

  27. ldwy says:

Bahhh. Man I'm having so much trouble dealing with commercials!!!

    • __Jen__ says:

Honestly, I'm kind of glad for them. They keep me from hyperventilating too much.

      • ldwy says:

Yes, I do agree with you there. It allows my breathing to go back to normal and for me to read back through some comments.
But I feel like I keep starting and stopping and starting and stopping with intense anxiety and it can't possibly be good for me.

  28. rabbitape says:

And "silence will fall" remains a completely opaque statement.

  29. always amy says:

    Overall Comment
    The Hell???
I love that Amy has a Scully costume.and half of that could be an x-files episode.
    Amy/Rory Forever.
    and again WHAT?????????
    Who is that girl?

  30. monkeybutter says:

Commercials comment: I want a remote control Dalek.

  31. keepthepunkrock says:

"this is a video phone… whatever a video phone is." AMAZING.

also holy fucking shit the silence MOST TERRIFYING MONSTERS OF ALL TIME

  32. ldwy says:

I love the music everytime Nixon shows up to validate the gang.

  33. __Jen__ says:

Is he a hologram of some sort? I don't have any idea of what's going on.

  34. monkeybutter says:

So they are completely back to front? Hmmph.

    • __Jen__ says:

That makes no sense though. I disagree with you, show!

    • Openattheclose says:

The Doctor still has to take her out and give her the screwdriver before she goes to the Library, so there has to be at least one more occasion in River's timeline when she meets the Doctor and he has knowledge of most or at least some of their adventures together. Unless Eleven did it early in his regeneration or Ten did it after the Library and they just didn't show us.

Basically, I think River is wrong, but she has no way of knowing that she'll see an up-to-date Doctor at least once more.

      • monkeybutter says:

Good point, and since she doesn't seem to expect she'll see a Doctor out of order, can we infer that it doesn't happen very often? I think they'd show us River getting the sonic screwdriver, because it seems like it would be a significant event, and would show that the Doctor trusts her with it. Something to look forward to!

  35. keepthepunkrock says:

oh god rory break my heart some more why don't you

    holy shit 🙁

  36. ldwy says:

Why would the silence raise a child?

Poor Rory seems to getting really frustrated, but Amy is missing so he deserves all the hugs.

Super parasites. Ughhhhhh. Parasites are grosssss, and this is still worse.

  37. rabbitape says:

Ok, the bit with the doctor was funny.

  38. monkeybutter says:

Ha, I was about to say the the Silents deprive mankind of free will, and then he did it for me!

  39. ldwy says:

Wait so humans decided to go to the moon simply because the Silence needed one spacesuit?

Hahahaha, this is a videophone. whatever a videophone is.
I can't help but think of Beyonce.

  40. monkeybutter says:

    IT'S ALIVE….MUAHAHAHAHA

  41. celestineangel1 says:

AMY… FREAKING… SHE BETTER BE TALKING ABOUT RORY.

    >.<

    DAMN IT.

  42. __Jen__ says:

This episode is so cool and epic and scary and heartbreaking.

    AMY WHAT ARE YOU SAYING???

  43. rabbitape says:

    That is ROUGH

  44. rabbitape says:

So what about the Silurians, then?

    • znachki says:

They're underground, and from Silent guy's comment – they've been here" since the wheel and fire" so, relative newcomers compared to the Silurians.

      • monkeybutter says:

Since the Silents are everywhere, does this mean that they prevented peace between humans and Silurians, and not Ambrose? Nah, still hate her.

  45. ldwy says:

NOOOOO AMY you love Rory. I know it.
Something is going on I don't believe that message in it's entirety.
And even hearing that, Rory still says "Can't you save her"

Ahhh, so Rory is still a Roman, or not?

    • ldwy says:

Is he still plastic? IS THIS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT????? I can't get this pseudo sort of theory out of my head. That Rory being a plastic Roman is going to be a vital part of the plot.

      • liis says:

Nah, he's not still plastic. He has the memories, but he's human.

        • ldwy says:

Hhaha people keep telling me that. Because of the "universe restart?"

          • anobium says:

Yes. Just after that, at the wedding, when the Doctor comes back, there's Rory in the background saying "I remember now! I was plastic!" Past tense.

    • znachki says:

I don't think he's plastic. The Nestenes are non-coporeal, so they make plastic duplicates. I think that Rory just has the memories.

      • Patrick says:

Whenever people talk about plastic, I just think of that episode of Spongebob with the Flying Dutchman's treasure.

        "Plastiiiiiiiiiic!"

  46. celestineangel1 says:

Rory, you big liar who lies. >.<

These are the moments I hate Amy. What she puts Rory through.

So. Hm… Suit is repairing itself. Photo of Amy and baby in the room. Little girl running around somewhere, suitless, or possibly eaten by the suit.

    WHAT IS GOING ON?

  47. ldwy says:

Did they just say "You will bring the silence?"

BECAUSE IF THAT MEANS THAT AMY WILL BECOME PREGNANT WITH A SILENCE I WILL BE SO SO SO SO FREAKED OUT.

Thank god the Doctor is here.

    • ldwy says:

Thank god my brain just jumped to a crazy conclusion that turned out to be NOT TRUE.

      • ldwy says:

Oh wait. Except now that the episode is over, I'm not writing off that crazy idea just yet. Still an option, a horrible horrible option.

  48. monkeybutter says:

    Hell yeah, River!

  49. rabbitape says:

Hee hee, River/Doctor flirting is the best.

  50. ldwy says:

    Hahahahahaha.
    "Is this really important flirting?"
    They're so cute.

  51. __Jen__ says:

River and the Doctor are SO HOT together.

    • echinodermata says:

been watching the liveblog and amusing myself with y'all on the east coast, but THIS is the comment that makes me have to chime in:
      mf YES

  52. monkeybutter says:

The Doctor's big bad scary speech isn't working this time…

  53. rabbitape says:

    Awesomeness

  54. ldwy says:

Man, Matt Smith is probably the best at the long speeches.

Why can he keep turning away? And still doing his speeches. Is it because they're surrounding him?

    • ThreeBooks says:

I'm pretty sure that since he's still looking at one of them no matter where he turns, the memory isn't reset. I think that if he closes his eyes for too long he'll forget them.

  55. monkeybutter says:

OOO, brilliant Doctor! Implanting ideas works against them!!

  56. ldwy says:

Hmm, this plan seems pretty good.
    YES RIVER YOU GET THEM!

  57. monkeybutter says:

    Aww, stupid face!

  58. ldwy says:

AWWW, YES THE STUPID FACE IS RORY YESSSSSSSSS. I KNEW ITTTTT. OR AT LEAST I LIKE TO THINK I DID.

  59. monkeybutter says:

Go build a cabinet, I love you River.

  60. __Jen__ says:

    THAT IS AWESOME.

  61. rabbitape says:

    River! Luv uh.

  62. keepthepunkrock says:

oh my god little girl regenerating WHAT THE SHITTING FUCKERY

jesus this episode i don't even

BRB REWATCHING IT IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE WHAT

i just literally cannot even i just

  63. ldwy says:

    "What are you doing?"
    "Helping"
"You've got a screw driver, go build a cabinet"

And then River goes BAMF on EVERY FUCKING THING and Rory is duly impressed and she "does love a tomb"
Hahahahahah must find out what's going on with River asap.

    Loveeeeee Rory and Amy.

  64. fakehepburn says:

I just finished watching it in my timezone.
    It's over.
    Things have been resolved…?
    Oh yeah, except —
    WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED.
    WHAT
    WHAT
    WHAT WAS THAT MOFFAT?
DO NOT MAKE ME SLAP YOU.

  65. celestineangel1 says:

Oh my gods, River/Doctor flirt session right in the middle of saving Amy this is seriously the first moment Iv'e actually shipped River/Doctor….

Also, THE SILENCE JUST EXECUTED THEMSELVES LOL. BRILLIANT.

Also, YAY AMY WAS TALKING ABOUT RORY! I am so happy, and Amy, I apologize for speaking ill of you.

  66. celestineangel1 says:

    "Dare I ask… will I be remembered?"

    LOL.

  67. rabbitape says:

    Ha! Oh, Delaware.

  68. monkeybutter says:

Yeah, that was kinda obvious. At least it's legal in DC, now!

  69. celestineangel1 says:

    "Yes… HE is."

    O.O!!!!

    😀 😀 😀

  70. monkeybutter says:

    Oh, kissy face and flailing.

  71. rabbitape says:

Super sadness — his first kiss with River is her last.

  72. ldwy says:

Hahahaha, "they'll never forget you" Say hi to Frost. Hahahahaha

    See "we haven't"
Because their timelines aren't exactly opposite.

    • ldwy says:

Fuck. Every time I think I've sort of worked out their timelines, I realize I'm a little wrong. That comment was totally backwards.

  73. monkeybutter says:

Her last kiss 🙁 Poor River.

  74. celestineangel1 says:

    "Right. 'Kay. Interesting."

… not exactly the reaction a girl looks for from a kiss like that, Doctor.

    Poor River. 🙁

  75. celestineangel1 says:

    "What's a time head?"
"I don't know, but what if it had one?"

    XD XD XD

    • ldwy says:

Um, confession. So I've been going back and reading comments, and one of the theories I like about Amy's possible baby is that Rory is the Dad but being on the Tardis and traveling in time somehow gave it timelordy powers.

I didn't realize there was potential support for this idea IN THE ACTUAL EPISODE until this very moment, reading this comment.

  76. ldwy says:

Oh my god, the cryyyyyyy. "And a last time" Does that mean River's next time is the Library.

    • celestineangel1 says:

Somehow I doubt that. It takes a while for a relationship to build to the kissing point… for him, it's still building. For her, it's being torn down backward.

We'll see her again, but she knows she's closer to that day when he won't know her at all.

      • ldwy says:

Alright, yes, true. This episode and liveblog have me thinking too fast to make any real sense 🙂

    • CuriousApe says:

I think her next time would be the Weeping Angels… And then the Library.

  77. __Jen__ says:

KISSING! Awesome and then sad. 🙁

  78. ldwy says:

I'm afraid that the little girl is Amy's baby. And that somewhere at some time she is pregnant. Seems like the Tardis can't make up it's mind. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??

  79. monkeybutter says:

    Quantum pregnancy

  80. monkeybutter says:

Haha, WHAT. Regenerating orphans! So, Amy's daughter?

  81. Taryn says:

Maybe it's a River/Doctor baby? Maybe Amy is in that picture as godmother or something, not the actual mother.

  82. celestineangel1 says:

    SO. MY THEORY:

Amy IS pregnant, but the time traveling HAs had an effect by slowing down the pregnancy…

… or… flipping it around so she is and isn't at the same time?

WHO IS THE LITTLE GIRL??? WHY CAN SHE REGENERATE???

AMY. WHOSE BED HAVE YOU BEEN IN RECENTLY??

    • monkeybutter says:

I don't know, but if the fetus is time traveling out of her womb, I'm going to punch things.

      • rabbitape says:

Oh good lord, I think you have it. This is gonna be…bizarre.

      • __Jen__ says:

Oh god, what an idea. This season is so crazy already. MOFFAT!

      • celestineangel1 says:

I have been speculating since last week about what traveling in the TARDIS might do to a pregnancy. This is gonna be weirder than I ever thought.

Also, I totally think River is Amy and Rory's kid.

        • ldwy says:

          Whoooooaaaaaa, what an idea.

          • celestineangel1 says:

I dunno, what she said about him just showing up in her life one day sort of makes me think I could be wrong, because I really want to believe she knows how to pilot the TARDIS because she grew up there and the Doctor was like her dotty old grandfather and taught her to pilot it until she grew up and HEEEEEEY suddenly she's all grown and petty and BAMF and….

BUT I suppose Amy and Rory could settle down with their Time Head baby, and then one day the Doctor shows up for a visit….

        • __Jen__ says:

My dad and I were just speculating about things and somehow we ended up with the Doctor as Amy's baby. IDEK.

          • celestineangel1 says:

            o.O

Amy as the Doctor's mom… that… well. That puts several things in a very… terrifying perspective….

AMY STOP MACKING ON YOUR SON. D:

      • pjg says:

welllllll, that was happening in The Time Travellers Wife. No, I never did see the movie, but the book had them with the MOST AMAZINGLY INTENSE LOVE STORY EVAR…. Rory and Amy and 2,000 years of waiting comes close, and River's discussion with Rory about it reminds me of it ever so much…. sigh, Im such a sucker for intense love stories across time. yeah., thorw the Outlander series in there too

      • ldwy says:

Oh my god, that would explain it. Cannot handle. There are wayyy too many ideas swirling around my poor tired brain.

        • celestineangel1 says:

Amy Pond. River. Red(ish) hair. Being completely BAMF and knowing how to pilot the TARDIS (BECAUSE SHE TOTALLY GREW UP IN IT).

          • ldwy says:

Definitely intriguing. But at that point I was actually just talking about the baby time traveling out of the womb, and this explaining the Tardis' yes/no readings.

      • attackwomb says:

        BEST COMMENT EVER.

    • TheKimler says:

This is true. The time traveler's wife kept "miscarrying" because the baby would time travel. Andddd we know Moffat has read, or at least is very familiar with, the book as he cited it as a direct influence on his script for The Girl in the Fireplace (saw it on his Twitter at some point).

      • Mia says:

And also the whole time travelling relationship where the couple keep meeting at different stages of their life = The Doctor/River. If Amy's baby is leaving the womb to time travel I would almost call it complete plagiarism.

    • Hyatt says:

I think Amy's Schrodinger Pregnancy is demonstrating why sex in the TARDIS is a Bad Idea.

    • ffyona says:

Schrodinger's baby. The two Amys from Amy's choice both still exist and one is pregnant and one not. There are also two Doctors (only one of whom dies in the Impossible Astronaut) because the Doctor says he's never had wine before but he did, in The Lodger.

When the Pandorica restored the universe via its snapshot of the universe, it restored Amy's alternate universe from Amy's choice because she'd spent so much time it before the Big Bang 2.

  83. monkeybutter says:

Muppet Treasure Island tells me a black mark is a dead man's mark!

    • __Jen__ says:

And everyone knows it is the best authority on such things!

Now I have to go listen to the soundtrack. 😀

      • Mia says:

        *Ahem*
        And when you're a professional Piiiiiiirate… you don't have to wear a suit 😀
Muppet Treasure Island was on iPlayer recently. At the table, my dad asked "OK, who wants to watch Muppet Treasure Island with me?"
Me (19 years old): Memememe! I love that film! Yay!!
My little sister (10 years old): I suppose so. *sigh*
That's backward. And I love it!

    • Emily Crnk says:

      MY CHILDHOOD

    • ldwy says:

That is why I know this also.

  84. ldwy says:

My first thought is that given the theory we've had that the Doctor was in the spacesuit and killed the Doctor, is the little girl the Doctor?

LISTEN I KNOW THAT THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, YOU CAN JUST IGNORE MY RAMBLINGS.

  85. znachki says:

GAHHH!!! You just *know* that we're going to revisit that at the cliffhanger mid-season. I mean, how can we not?

  86. kellythered says:

Amy's Schrodinger's Pregnancy was weird enough but the little girl BLEW MY FUCKING MIND. WHAT. WHAT IS IT LIKE IN YOUR HEAD STEPHEN MOFFAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

    • celestineangel1 says:

I don't want to know what goes on in Moffat's head.

      That's a scary, scary place.

I have nightmares enough from just these glimpses.

      • __Jen__ says:

This reminds me of an article he wrote for DW magazine where he was just rambling about riding on a train with Karen, Matt and Arthur and he concocted this whole scenario in which he was wondering how long he'd survive if their trip suddenly turned into an action movie and the train exploded. Basically, he figured they'd all stride out saving ophans and such while he died after accidentally stepping on a baby to run away. It was weird and hilarious.

    • ldwy says:

I do not think I want to know what it is like in Stephen Moffatt's head. The real world can be strange enough, if I lived in Moffatt's head I would lose my mind with terror and confusion. I know this to be the true outcome.

  87. Meadow says:

AHHHH THAT BLEW MY MIND EVEN MORE THAN PT. 1 WHAT.
    Theory:
    Little girl is
    a. Amy and the Doctor's baby
    b. River and the Doctor's
    c. Doctor in another incarnation
    d. Master? IDK

    • __Jen__ says:

Or it is Amy's and Rory's but the TARDIS did give her a "Time Head" of sorts? Time energy from the TARDIS interfering with the pregnancy? Or did the Silence somehow mess with her? IDK.

  88. Kaitlyn says:

    WHAT.
    WHAT.
    I CANNOT
    I CANNOT EVEN

    I WANT TO SAY THINGS
BUT I DON'T KNOW ANY WORDS ANYMORE

  89. Meadow says:

YES! Canton's with a black guy that is awesome in the sixtees! Someone else on here called it!

    • celestineangel1 says:

I wonder if it's the guy we saw in the first part? And what we saw was 1) a lover's tiff OR 2) their way of covering up their relationship?

Except it doesn't seem like he was trying to hide their relationship, if wanting to marry his boyfriend got him kicked out of the FBI. :/

  90. __Jen__ says:

Watching the Doctor who in America special and the line "More happened in 1969 than anyone remembers" certainly has new meaning now.

  91. andreah1234 says:

MY BRAIN HURTS. I DON'T HAVE ANY GOOD/COHERENT THINGS TO SAY. REALLY MY BRAIN JUST DIED.

MOFFAT!!!!!!! (I really wish I had that gif right now. It would be incredibly useful).

    Also, River 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

    AFDSJ;BTAEPNIETAWJLGDAFBSKLJNGAETINUETBAIPGRJN

    WHAT. WHAT WHAT WHAT.

I WAS SHRIEKING AT MY TELEVISION DURING THE LAST SCENE. SHRIEKING.

AMY'S PREGNANCY IS IN FLUX, AND HER (PRESUMABLY) FUTURE DAUGHTER JUST REGENERATED.

I was sad during the Amy transmitter scene – I knew that it was going to be revealed that she was talking about Rory in the end, but I'm not completely sold. She was talking about the Doctor before and after and 'Fell out of the sky' isn't a metaphor I've heard…even.

    I'm not crazy, I swear.

BUT MOFFAT IS PROBABLY TROLLING US ALL ANYWAY.

I have heard the expression "fell out of the sky" usually simply to describe something sudden. A person might have fallen out of the sky, but usually you would say that if you met them by coincidence, or really abruptly, or got to know them quickly or something like that….and Rory and Amy are meant to have grown up together.

MOFFAT IS THE BIGGEST TROLL EVER. EXCEPT MAYBE IROH.

I've heard we're supposed to see young Amelia and Rory this season. Maybe Rory "fell out of the sky" by being the first person to befriend her and stay with her, when everyone else was put off by the Scottish stranger, and even when they overcame that, backed off when she started talking about her imaginary friend? Maybe the realization that here's someone she's connecting to who is still there the next day (and isn't family)?
