Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Death Note.Â

Y’all, Death Note doesn’t even fuck around when it comes to CLIP EPISODES. Look, I don’t have much to say about all the stuff I’ve really seen here, but I think it’s INCREDIBLE the way that show packaged a summary of the first twenty-five episodes. It’s done in a manner that felt exciting, partly because the clips don’t linger on screen for two long. It’s like a “Best Of” compilation where no single scene is allowed more than ten seconds of time. Thus, ten minutes had passed without it feeling like it. That’s pretty cool! But I also picked up on the fact that the the framing of this summary was entirely through L’s perspective. We saw none of what Light experienced or what Misa went through, and there’s certainly very little here about the Death Note itself. That seemed intentional, right?

Initially, I thought the set-up existed to show how Light systematically erased every piece of work that L had done to link him and Misa to Kira and Second Kira. Indeed, right before the mid-episode break, that’s what we were led to believe. It’s upsetting and tragic, and honestly? The more I think about it, the sadder I get. L dedicated his entire life to catching this murderer, he was so close to having the proof of it all, and Light still killed him. He erased his work. He made it all but certain that L will fade away into obscurity until those who met him die or forget him.

And then he has the nerve to say that the other investigators bore him because L isn’t around to challenge him.

I think it’s a perfect demonstration of what a monstrous person Light has become. He most certainly views himself as a god, so it’s unsurprising to me that even after killing someone, HE STILL PROCESSES L’S DEATH AS BEÂ INCONVENIENTÂ TO HIM. WHAT THE HELL!!! But this is Light’s world, and with every obstacle out of his way, he can’t help but center the universe around him. He dismantles the headquarters; he gets everyone to assign him as the new L; and he even brings Misa in closer to him. I don’t for a second believe he actually loves her. I imagine he just wants to keep her around in case he can use her in the future.

No, Light’s future is one of domination. With L no longer blocking him, he spends FIVE FUCKING YEARS murdering criminals so consistently that part of the world actually begins to think he’s doing a good thing. Is he changing the world? Who knows!!! Apparently, there are still enough criminals around that Light’s got an endless supply of them FOR FIVE YEARS WORTH OF MURDER. So is he even discouraging crime at all? Does he even care about that? No, of course not. He doesn’t give a shit if the world is better for anyone else. As long as he’s at the center of this new existence, that’s all that matters. He wants power. How does he get that beyond using the Death Note?

HE JOINS THE NATIONAL POLICE AGENCY.

WHAT THE HELL.

This whole time, though, I needed one question answered: How the fuck were there any more episodes left? If Light “won,” what story was there left to tell?

ANNOUNCING WATARI AS THE ACE UP THIS SHOW’S SLEEVE, BECAUSE HE HAD A SYSTEM IN PLACE THE WHOLE TIME TO NOTIFY “SOME DUDE” AT ONE OF HIS ORPHANAGES IN CASE HE AND L DIED AND LOOK, WE JUST NEED TO TAKE A BRIEF MOMENT TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT AN ETERNAL SWEETHEART WATARI WAS. ORPHANAGESÂ EVERYWHERE.

Anyway, I am really hoping that some light is shed on Watari’s past and how he came to raise L. Why was L raised as he was? Who are those two kids? Who is that man? IS THIS THE NEXT CHAPTER? Please tell me that those two are gonna take Light down.
