Intrigued? Then it’s time for Mark to watch Dead Like Me.

oh my god help me.

The title of this episode is actually a textual reference to what I experienced whilst watching this episode: a constant need to scream BE STILL MY HEART.

Because holy shit, this episode packed MULTIPLE PUNCHES STRAIGHT TO ALL OF MY FEELINGS.

Can we start off talking about Mason? Amidst all of the chaos and emotional devastation in “Be Still My Heart,” Mason does not fuck up once. He trolls rich people. He steals from them and gives a gift to Daisy. He gives George good advice multiple times. For the first time in the entire series, he plays the straight man. Mason is the one who is the most normal here. It is a goddamn treat to see this because it’s pulled off without negating all the character development we’ve seen from him. He’s still a giant goofball, he’s funny, he’s terrible at hitting on women, and yet he experiences one of the best days of his reaper career in this episode. Bravo, writers, this is a feat that proves how talented y’all are.

This whole season is seriously hitting all my emotional buttons consistently. Yet again, I’m blown away by how my perception of Dead Like Me has changed since I started writing about the show. Oh god, I still can’t shake the sense that this is all leading to some HUGE moment at the end of the season.

Rube is… god, how do you describe this? He’s always been the stoic core of the group, and that’s not the case anymore. Not only has he been distant with his reapers, but we see him in a moment of vulnerability while he’s talking to Roxy. You can tell he’s not comfortable showing this side of him, but it’s where he is emotionally. He knows that he’s revealing his own hypocrisy, too! Roxy’s aware of that, and she tries her best to dig in a little deeper with him.

Oh god, he’s going to go look for his daughter. But isn’t she dead by now? I know we don’t have an exact timeline for when Rube died, but it’s been a long time. So what’s he going to do? I WANT TO KNOW SO MUCH MORE.

Oh, George. I have been in your position before. This episode tracks her desire to see Trip again, to pursue something she’s never really had before. And I don’t blame her! After seeing her interact with Trip in the previous episode, I get why she is taking a chance and going to the funeral. (PS: SHE LOOKED GREAT IN THAT DRESS/COAT COMBO. Holy shit. Get it, George!)

This leads to her having sex for the first time. It’s a bewildering point in George’s life for a number of reasons, obviously because she’s finally had sex. But then there’s the confusion of what role Trip plays in her life now, or the fact that she’s aware that Trip may have had sex with her because of his emotional state. She knows that her relationship with him, even as friends, has changed forever because they’ve had sex. So what now? What does she do next? I imagine the next episode is going to deal with the implications of this.

In a more literal interpretation of the episode’s title, Reggie visits her father for the first time, and both her parents do their best to complete Reggie’s science experiment for her. It’s actually very indicative of who these two characters are. Joy spends all her time building a scientifically accurate model, while Clancy relies on the emotional resonance of Shakespeare. In the end, Reggie uses the combination of the two in class, a neat little commentary on her relationship with her divorced parents.

My god, Reggie is so brutally honest with her father. I get the sense that she enjoys being with Joy more than Clancy, but she’s viciously sympathetic with her father regardless. (Seriously, I don’t know how else to describe the way Reggie lays out her father’s flaws while understanding what’s going on with him. Viciously sympathetic. In my head, it works!)

And then I can’t deal with Daisy at all. I can’t. I can’t deal with her having a breakdown like this. The murder Daisy witnesses when she reaps a soul triggers memories of… what? I’m guessing from her final conversation with Mason that her mention of having a sister is what caused her to leave that poor woman’s soul behind and name the murderer for the police. Oh my god, what happened to Daisy’s sister? MY HEART. BE STILL MY HEART.

This show is getting so good, y’all.

The video commission for this episode is now archived on MarkDoesStuff.com for just $0.99!

Mark Links Stuff

– I have been nominated for a Hugo in the Fan Writer category!
