{"id":1716,"date":"2012-12-28T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwatches.net\/reviews\/?p=1716"},"modified":"2012-12-28T11:11:19","modified_gmt":"2012-12-28T19:11:19","slug":"mark-watches-angel-qa-re-watching-city-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/markwatches.net\/reviews\/2012\/12\/mark-watches-angel-qa-re-watching-city-of\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Watches &#8216;Angel&#8217; Q&amp;A \/ Re-Watching &#8216;City Of&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Much like <a href=\"http:\/\/markwatches.net\/reviews\/2012\/10\/mark-re-watches-doppelgangland-buffy-qa\/\" target=\"_blank\">the phenomenally fun\u00c2\u00a0<em>Buffy<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0Q&amp;A<\/a> I did after finishing all seven seasons of that show, I&#8217;d like to continue the tradition of hosting a Q&amp;A about my experience so that we can discuss overarching themes, minutia, and other such things WITHOUT HAVING TO USE ROT13.<\/p>\n<p>Important things you should know before posting a question:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 16px;\">I am going to read the Joss-approved canon comics for BOTH\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 16px;\"><em>Buffy<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 16px;\"> and\u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 16px;\"><em>Angel<\/em>. I do have an order for them. They will be posted on Mark Reads as double features, meaning that they will not interrupt the normal\u00c2\u00a0<em>The Immortals<\/em> or\u00c2\u00a0<em>Newsflesh<\/em> posts and instead will be a second post that goes up in the afternoon. I will start these\u00c2\u00a0<strong>as soon as I finish the manuscript for the final\u00c2\u00a0<em>Mark Reads Harry Potter<\/em> book, which should not take longer than two weeks from today<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Please check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/calendar\/embed?src=815s3sbr8clhdi9tn8k7r3tim4@group.calendar.google.com&amp;ctz=America\/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Master Schedule<\/a>, as I have re-watches of\u00c2\u00a0<em>Buffy\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Angel<\/em> scheduled for the next week. These discussion posts will go up in the mornings on Mark Watches.<\/li>\n<li>We will continue with\u00c2\u00a0<em>Dollhouse<\/em> through next Thursday, and then I&#8217;ll review the\u00c2\u00a0<em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em> film with Donald Sutherland and Kristy Swanson.<\/li>\n<li>After that, I start\u00c2\u00a0<em>Cowboy Bebop\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00c2\u00a0<em>Princess Tutu<\/em> simultaneously!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Otherwise, let&#8217;s discuss\u00c2\u00a0<em>Angel<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>[vimeo 56351145 w=500 h=375]<\/p>\n<p>Nooooo, oh my god, CORDELIA and DOYLE and ANGEL LOOKS SO YOUNG HERE. God, remember when I thought the Wolfram and Hart storyline would only last one season? IT WAS A SERIES-LONG ARC. h e l p. In hindsight, this is a\u00c2\u00a0<em>much<\/em> better pilot than I thought it was, and I still enjoyed it quite a bit the first time I saw it. It really set the bar for how fucked up, morally ambiguous, and upsetting\u00c2\u00a0<em>Angel\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>would be. Ugh, it also makes me miss Cordelia\u00c2\u00a0<em>forever<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The setting for this show is also one of the things\u00c2\u00a0<em>Angel<\/em> did super well, and I know I commented on the realistic nature of the portrayal of Los Angeles often. I&#8217;m still kind of bitter and hateful about the place, but I was born there and had a lot of shitty things happen to me, so I recognize my bias. If anything,\u00c2\u00a0<em>Angel<\/em> kind of reminded why I lived there for so long. It&#8217;s an unreal and massive metropolis, where a billion things are happening at any moment spread across city lines that are big enough to hold entire counties within their borders. And the show also didn&#8217;t ignore the fact that so many people flock to L.A. only to have their dreams broken.
