Mark Re-Watches ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’: Blood Ties

Big thank you to Lawrence for supporting me and commissioning me to watch an utterly fantastic episode of this show. CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS.

First, the video!

Oh, I don’t expect to ever change my mind about this: season five of Buffy is my favorite season of this show. It gave me Glory, Dawn, Tara and Willow being cute, “The Body,” “Family,” “Fool For Love,” and that fucking GUT-WRENCHING FINALE, “The Gift.” It also inspired the very first Mark Watches videos.

Season five is also responsible for that goddamn incredible running joke about Ben having some sort of connection to Glory. Ugh, I LOVE ALL OF YOU SO MUCH.

I enjoy that Buffy tackled the issue of identity through Dawn in a remarkably complex and uncomfortable way, and the payoff in “Blood Ties” is absolutely worth it. We needed to see Dawn’s side of this because it’s such a bizarre notion to realize your experiences were invented. As I said in this video, it’s a fascinating way to also explore the concept of a teenage rebellion in a way we’ve never seen before.

Oh gods, there is so much foreshadowing here, too. There was a time when Spike and Buffy were enemies! And then he had a crush on her! And then season six happened and oh no. I do wish the show had shown more of the Dawn/Spike relationship, but you know, I’m just being selfish. I just want more because I love this show so much. I am excited that once I finish Angel, I’ll be able to spend time in the universe with the comics, but it’s not the same.

Okay, let’s all make fun of Riley because of reasons. Wait! I’m curious. What is everyone’s favorite season? I will only accept seasons three and five as answers. JUST KIDDING. Oh god, I never got to ask this, did I? LET’S FIND OUT.
