1 Response to Mark Finishes ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’: S07E22 – Chosen

Sometimes I forget that I’m watching a comic parody of horror movie conventions, not a melodrama. In the latter, properly executed, there is no room for deus ex machina surprises like unheard of cults, magic weapons, convenient army bases, universities, etc. The reason I make this frequent mistake is because BUFFY has heart, something you don’t usually expect from a parody.

BUFFY asks the question: what if the helpless white girl, the dumb blonde with a silly name, who either gets rescued by a man or victimized by the monster, turns out to be more than capable of handling herself?

I have had my share of conflicting feelings about Spike’s behavior, Cordelia’s “departure”, and Tara’s death. If I had watched BUFFY in my twenties, I would echo the feelings of outrage which are prevalent here. However, at the age of 58 (and still baking in the oven), I take things differently.

On that note, I recommend that everyone re-watch BUFFY again in 30 years. Heraclitus said you can’t step twice in the same stream. Likewise, BUFFY is one of those rare works that you can watch over and over again for the first time.
